Mrs. Zella H. Ford Mr. Willis G. Tetrick, Jr., P. O. Box 267 Clarksburg, W.
Va. 26301 When I was told that it would be
next to impossible to drill into the white marble tombstone of Edward Jackson
(my patriot) whose stone we and other descendants had moved from the old
Edward Jackson farm near Mt. Clare to the cemetery at the Seventh Day Baptist
Church at Salem we decided to order regular Government markers to be placed in
front of Edward’s and his son, Stephen’s stone. Mr. Bassel at Mt. Clare is
all set and ready to accept the markers when they arrive and place them in
cement. But I ran upon a snag concerning
Stephen’s marker. I thought we
had plenty of evidence that he joined the Second Virginia Regiment with his
father when he was 17 and that he fought through to the end and was wounded at
the battle of Yorktown as was his father. I have just received a letter
from the Government saying they failed to find enough evidence of Stephen’s
service. We have called upon you so much
and you have meant so much to us for years now in our different family research
that I hesitate to ask your help again but could you find in all your wonderful
records some good proofs to send back to the Government on Stephen Jackson’s
service? I realize you did not let me pay
for you for your help even in all you did to get things together for Earl to
join the SAR but I am enclosing my check $5.00 to cover postage and any zeroxed
copies you might be able to send to me. Do you realize that dear cousin, Mont Stutler, was going to
have Edward and Stephen Jackson’s grave stone marked but
he passed away only a few days after we rescued the stone from the “pig
lot” on Edward’s old farm? He
brought the stone off the hill and I was always afraid he worked too hard.
Neva said he had been going hard at many other things also
and that no one thing brought his sudden attack about.
Sincerely,
/s/
