Edwin and Belinda had the following children per the 1880 Census: Wm. S., Lena M., George F., Coleman, Mary L., and Mettie (Matilda).

2972. Mortimer W. Stout-4080

Mortimer and Byrd are found in the 1880, 1900, 1910 census record for Grant Dist. Harrison Co, WV. (But the 1910 census is indexed as 'Mortomore' Stout.) Byrd is on the 1920 census living with her son Earl W. and his wife in Clarksburg, Harrison Co, WV.

Mortimer's Middle initial W. from his son, Edward's death certificate; is also W on the cemetery reading and many of his children's birth records.

Bird-Byrd Reed Lorentz - Lawrence-4090

By the time of the 1920 Census, Bird was living in Clarksburg, Harrison Co, WV, with her son Earl W, age 36, and his wife, Andrea H. MNU, age 25. Bird is 64. This gives an estimated birth year of 1856; the 1900 census gives birth year of 1855; the cemetery record gives birth year of 1851. Her d/o/d taken from the cemetery record.

There is quite a variety of spellings for her name in the many records of her children. On Mable's birth record, her mother is Bird Reed Stout. In the 1870 Jane Lew Twp, Lewis Co Census she is a 14 year old child enumerated with the family of James Lorentz, but is not listed in age order with the other children, but is listed after the youngest Lorentz child and her name is Bird Reed. On her marriage record to M. W. Stout, her name is Bird Lorentz. On her daughter Jessie's death certificate, her name is Byrd Lawrence. So it is a possibility that she was a Reed child that the Lorentz family either adopted or raised.

5782. Benjamin Mortimer Stout-4328

I found a birth record for Benj. S. Stout b 13 Sep 1892 to Mart W. & Byrd. He's on 1900 & 1910 census with no middle initial. I found Benjamin Mortimer Stout's death record that says his father & mother is Mortimer and Byrd Stout. He died in Monongalia Co. 27 Sep 1948. So birth record initial and Mart instead of Mort is wrong.

Benjamin is on the 1900 and 1910 census record.

If Lewis was born in 1868, he should have been on the 1870 census, but wasn't. I have come to think that William L one month old (in 1870) is the same person as Lewis on the 1900 census record.

Mary and Joseph's son Clark was born in Missouri but on the 1880 census he was living in Harrison County, WV with his Aunt and uncle. If his parents had died or stayed in Missouri, I don't know.

I'm curious as to why Thomas was considered the head of the family at 21 instead of his father-in-law unless perhaps Thomas had acquired ownership of the property where they were living??

Thomas' marriage record to Sarah J. said he was a widower at age 20. I have not found any record of an earlier marriage.

Stout Thomas J (W) 20 Harrison
Tanner Sarah J 17 Roane; Harrison

Noah & Mary E (Sarah's birth records agree that Noah & Mary E. are her parents.)
20 Mar 1879

Now comes the question: if he married Sarah J. Tanner, how come the 1880 census above says Albert Lewis is his father-in-law? I believe the answer lies in the marriage record of Albert Lewis and the 1870 census record for Albert Lewis and Mary E Davis Farnum (widow) below. Albert's bride Mary E Davis was Widow Farnum(Tanner). She had been previously married and the two oldest children in the census must have been children she brought into the marriage and are Albert's step-daughters. Albert and Mary E. were married in 1865. The two daughters were therefore born before the marriage date and must have been from Mary E.'s previous marriage.

Census error here: the enumerator should have listed Malvina E's and Sarah J's proper last name. Albert was their step-father. Albert and Mary E. had married in 1865 and these two oldest children are the result of Mary's previous marriage to Noah Tanner.

In the 1900 Grant, Harrison Co, WV census Thomas, Sarah and dau Allie B. are on the same page as his brother George, wife Malona and mother Amanda Stout. In this census it says Thomas' birthdate is Aug 1857. His online birth records says birthdate if 4 Oct 1857.

I looked at the online image myself. It clearly says the child's name was Thomas and was female. Cause: Mother's fall from a horse at 6 months gestation. Perhaps they were hoping for a boy; or someone put the Father's name on that line by mistake.

3008. Capt. Joseph Jackson Halsey-1662

Joseph resided in Hopewell, Dutchess Co., New York, until 1834 when his family removed to Morris Co., New Jersey.

The following information about Joseph Jackson Halsey and Mildred Morton Halsey was found by Kay Fenton at the following website which is a "National Register of Historic Places Registration Form" found here: http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/Orange/068-0131_Lessland_1999_Final_Nomination.pdf

Scrolling way down on this form gives a description of the property called 'Lessland', it's historical significance, detailed architectural description, even this bit of info about it's owner: Joseph Jackson Halsey. If you love old homes, it is fascinating reading! The following is only a small portion of the info available.

Location: Bushy Mountain Road, Orange, (now Culpeper) County, Virginia

About Lessland :
"Lessland, situated in north-central Orange County, is an excellent example of a post-bellum Italianate plantation house. Built in 1871 by Joseph J. Halsey, a New Jersey-born lawyer who had settled in central Virginia in the 1840s and married into a prominent local family, the present Lessland dwelling replaced an earlier house on the site which burned. . . .
"The present Lessland house was built in 1871 by Joseph Jackson Halsey on property that he had purchased from his father-in-law Jeremiah Morton in 1854. A large landowner and important political figure in the region, Morton lived at his nearby plantation The Hall (locally known as Morton Hall). . . According to family tradition, Morton christened the 441-acre tract Lessland because in contained 'less land' than his other properties Moreland and Stillmore.
"A New Jersey native and an 1842 graduate of Princeton University, J. J. Halsey came south to accept a teaching position in Fredericksburg at the Classical and Scientific Athenaeum and taught and lived at the Farmers Hotel. He married Jeremiah Morton's daughter, Mildred, on Sept. 3, 1846, was admitted to the bar in 1847, and moved to Lessland, where he managed the farm as well as practiced law.
"There was a one story wooden dwelling house on the property when Jeremiah Morton purchased it from John Porter in 1848. By 1860, J. J. Halsey had remodeled and enlarged this house into a two story stuccoed frame structure and had added further improvements . . . which still stand on the front lawn at Lessland.
"J. J. Halsey adopted the lifestyle of the Morton family, and supported the Confederacy during the Civil War. During the conflict, he was a Captain in the 6th Virginia Cavalry, Company I (the Orange Rangers). . .
"Following the deaths of Mildred Morton Halsey in April 1906 and Joseph J. Halsey in February 1907, their grandson Franklin Steams Halsey purchased Lessland from other family members in May, 1907."

Following the above is a continuation of the genealogy of Franklin Steams Halsey as he and his descendants have continued to own the property.

Biography of Capt. Joseph Jackson Halsey as found in "Virginia Genealogies":
"He was grad. A. B., Latin Salut., Coll. N.J., 1842; A. M. 1845; removed to Virginia 1845; studied law and was admitted to the bar 1847. In 1861 he entered the Confederate States Army as a private 6th Va. Cavalry; was appointed C.S. Commissary on the re-formation of the regiment under Colonel (afterwards General) Charles W. Field, Dec., 1861, which position he held until the surrender of the Army of N. Va at Appomattox C. H. , April 9, 1865. Mr. Halsey was twice married - (1) Sept. 18, 1845 to Mary Jane Glassell, dau. of Wm. Erasmus and Margaret Somerville) Glassell. She d. six weeks after marriage, Oct. 31, 1845. 5799. Dr. Bee Bartow Halsey-15187

Bee B. Halsey is listed in the 1880 census for Rockaway, Morris Co., New Jersey, living with his uncle Edmund Halsey. Bee is an 18 year old student, lists his birth place as Virginia, his father: NY and his mother: VA.

Biographical Notes contributed by Kay Fenton:
Dr Bee Halsey is in the Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929. He attended and graduated from University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore: University of Maryland School of Medicine and College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1885 graduate. He was licensed to practice in West Virginia in 1886, California 1890, and Arizona 1910, He began his medical practice in Winkleman, AZ in May 28, 1913. Family oral history is that he died while attending patients in a flu epidemic in Winkleman. His death certificate says pneumonia so it is probable that the family history is correct.

3016. Lieutenant Edmund Drake Halsey-1923

North Jersey History & Genealogy Center of the Morristown and Morris Township Library, Edmund D. Halsey Papers, 1793-1906:
Edmund Drake Halsey was born in Rockaway, Morris County, New Jersey on September 11, 1840, the youngest of seven siblings. His mother was Sarah Jackson, granddaughter of Colonel Stephen Jackson, friend of General George Washington and founder of an early Rockaway iron mine and foundry. Edmund Halsey graduated from Princeton College in 1860 and practiced law for two years in Morristown, New Jersey before enlisting with the Union Army. He quickly rose to the rank of lieutenant and served with the army until January 1865, when he was honorably discharged after contracting pleurisy. In November of that year he resumed the practice of law in Morristown and became involved with litigations concerning important interests such as the Morris Canal, the Orphans Court, and local mining companies as well as the legal management of area estates and properties. He married Mary Darcy of Newark, New Jersey. They were to have seven children, though only one, Cornelia, would live long enough to have children of her own. Edmund Drake Halsey died October 17, 1896 in Rockaway and is buried in that town's Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The Early Iron Industry Of Morris And Passaic Counties.

Morristown, N. J., Dec. 19, 1890.
My Dear Mr. Nelson:—My grandfather's brother, William Jackson, when an old man spent much of his time at Kockaway, where he was born and brought up. He wrote a long MS. account of early iron enterprises in which he was engaged, and in it he said he and his brother (my grandfather, Col. Jos. Jackson), were the first to roll, round and square iron in this country—that they did it in the Paterson mill which they leased of Colt. I knew this from others also. That they built together the rolling mill in Rockaway 1822 I also know. It cost them I think $8,000, and my grandfather paid his brother as much for his half as the whole cost. Uncle William then went off and built Clinton furnace, near Newfoundland, which enterprise nearly ruined him. In 1865 I went with him to Clinton to see the ruins. It was just forty years from the time he cut the first stick at Clinton. Did you ever notice tho sketch I prepared of my grandfather, Col. J.? Only a few were printed but I think I sent one to the Historical Society? It contains some account of this first rolling mill.

Old Judge David Ogden, of Newark, was a very prominent man. He was a son of Col. Josiah Ogden, who built Trinity Church, and was born 1679 and died in 1763. Judge David was born 1707 and died 1798 at Jamaica, Long Island. He was a Tory, as was his son Isaac, and son-in-law, Nicholas Hoffman. He married Gertrude Gouverneur, but your letter gives me the first notice of her death.

Yours Very Truly,

E. D. HALSEY
(Edmund Drake Halsey)
