2888. Edward Jackson-619

Edward and his brother Samuel both found on the Census of 1860, listed as single men being from Lewis County, Virginia. In 1860 they were both living with a family, Franklin B. (60) and Elizabeth (41) Ferrill. Subsequent research indicates Elizabeth is Edward and Samuel's mother, Franklin B. Ferrell is their step-father, their father, Benjamine having died.

On March 1, 1864 Edward enlisted as a private in the 19th Cavalry of Virginia; Capt. George Downs' Company "A". He would have been nearly 23 yrs. old and was still single. He enlisted at Williamsburg, VA, and was signed in by Col. Wm. L. Jackson for three years.

On the Marriage records (1856-1875) Samuel and Edward both listed their parents as Benjamin and Elizabeth Jackson. At the time of his marriage Edward was 25 and Susannah was 18.

By the 1870 Census the brothers were both married and no longer living with Ferrill's. Edward’s family and Samuel’s family were the only two Jacksons in the district on the 1870 Census. Edward and Susanna (ages 30 & 23) were found in the 1870 census of Calhoun Co. On the 1880 census Edward's family lived in Center District. "History of Calhoun County" mentions that Edward had a farm near Big Springs as of 1869.

Edward and his wife joined the Methodist church in 1878 or 1879. Obit for Susannah says "When they didn't have church buildings they worshiped in the old Jackson schoolhouse and homes."

Edward's obit states that he was "born July 25th, 1840 on the old Stalnaker homestead near the mouth of Leaf Bank. The area was still Virginia then." Both Edward's obit and headstone in Nobe Cemetary give his date of death Dec 17, 1918.

There is a deed dated 19 Aug 1848 wherein Isaac Collins sells to Edward, Samuel and Spencer B. Jackson 125 acres, Gilmer County, Yellow Creek. This brings into question Spencer's death date.

Susannah 'Susan' Johnson-620

Marriage records Calhoun County 1856-1875 spelled her name Susanna and said she was from Gilmer County, VA. (West Virginia was not formed yet.) Susanna was 18 when she married Edward Jackson.
Her obit says she was born July 9, 1847. The 1900 Calhoun Census records her birth date as Feb 1851.

Published in the Calhoun Chronicle, March, 1936:
Susannah Johnson Jackson, daughter of James W. and Elizabeth (Burrows) Johnson, was born July 9, 1847; departed this life March 21st, 1936. Age 88 years, eight months and 12 days. She died at the home of her son William H. Jackson where she had resided for the past several years.
She was united in marriage to Edward Jackson (now deceased) May 27, 1866, and to this union five sons and three daughters were born, Namely: William H. Jackson, Big Springs; T. J. Jackson, Williamstown; Albert H. Jackson, Big Springs; Lillian Mae Jackson, deceased; Granville R. Jackson, Garber, Oklahoma; Mrs. Blanch Stump, Bartletsville, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Maud Monroe of Elkview, W. Va.
Some of the other children raised by grandmother that we can recall are as follows: Missouri Stallman Nicholas, deceased; Armanda Starcher Seals, deceased; Jennie Collins Knight, deceased; Albert Stallman, Burnt House; Hubert Maxwell, deceased; Elva Meekins, Parkersburg and Ernest Flynn, deceased.
She kept several others, some for months and some for two or three years.
She is also survived by 20 grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She always tried to make everyone feel welcome and her home was always open to anyone that needed its care and protection. She was kind-hearted and always enjoyed doing for everyone and especially small children, and was loved by all who knew her.
In the year of 1878 or 79, she joined the Methodist church with her husband. When they didn’t have church buildings they worshiped in the old Jackson schoolhouse and the homes. She demonstrated a Christian life by the good she did for others.
Short services were held at the home on Monday and were continued at the No. Seven church with interment in the church cemetery there. Funeral services were in charge of the Rev. Albert Smith of near Grantsville; assisted by the Rev. N. H. Bartlett of Grantsville and Rev. Kelley of Pleasant Hill. By A grand-daughter, Ruth Jackson.

2890. Samuel Jackson-660

Samuel and Edward both found on the Census of 1860 in Sherman District, Calhoun County, listed as being from Lewis County, Virginia. In 1860 they were both living with their widowed mother who had married again to Franklin B. Ferrill. By 1870 they were both married and no longer living with Ferrill's. On the Marriage records (1856-1875) Samuel and Edward both listed their parents as Benjamin and Elizabeth Jackson.

Jane R. Weese-5446

In the 1870 census Ravenswood, Jackson Co, WV Jane R. Blake is listed as the wife of Amanda Blake who is a 30 year old male. Obviously, the census taker wrote Amanda instead of Emanuel Blake. Three daughters are listed on the next page: Bulah age 6, Effa age 4, and Edna age 2.

(This same census taker, on the same page, listed Jane's father as Ziba instead of Zadoc.)

DEATH BY LIGHTNING (pub June 26, 1896)

George Jackson is Stricken Down at his Home in Harlan Township Saturday Evening.

Saturday afternoon at about half past three Mr. George Jackson was killed by lightning on his farm near Level in Harlan Township. With a number of his neighbors who had gathered, Mr. Jackson was engaged in a game of base ball in an open field away from any tree or other object that might attract lightning. There was but little sign of an approaching storm and but few clouds were visible. A flash and a report and the entire company were stunned but recovering and looking about they were horrified to find Mr. Jackson, who was some distance from the rest, lying prone upon the ground. Hasty examination showed that the deadly bolt had struck the unfortunate man on the head and had passed down his body and into the ground, tearing off one of his shoes.

The sad duty of breaking the awful news to the members of his family was performed and the body removed to the residence. But one of the saddest tasks was yet to be done. A daughter of Mr. Jackson was here attending the Normal and that morning a sister had come over to enjoy the reunion on Saturday night and remain over Monday. A neighbor arrived here that evening, informed the young ladies of the death of their father and took them to their home.

The funeral occurred from the late residence Tuesday morning, at ten o’clock, after which the remains were taken to Blanchester for burial.

Mr. Jackson was born in Harlan township, December 17, 1838, and lived there all his life. He was twice married. His first wife was Julia A. Flesher, by whom he had two children, a son and a daughter. The second wife was Miss Hill, who, with five daughters and two sons, survives him. Deceased was a kind husband and father and a good neighbor and well known. He was the most extensive stock raiser in Warren county, his specialty being short-horn cattle. His herd usually won first prize wherever exhibited, that including nearly all the fairs in Southern Ohio.

2926. Elizabeth 'Eliza' Jane Flesher-2785

Eliza was found in the 1860 Salem, Warren Co, OH Census living with her mother and step-father, Stephen Jackson.

In 1864 she was an heir of her grandfather Alfred Scudder. Alfred named Susannah's children by Elias Flesher has his heirs and not his daughter, Susannah, probably as she had married again to Stephen Jackson, a man with many children of his own. So Afred protected his grandchildren's inheritance.
