Her name was nearly impossible to read on the birth records but very legible on the 1870 census record. Though her age is indexed wrong at ancestry.com on this 1870 record. Her age is indexed as 19 in an effort to keep the children's ages in chronilogical order. But the image looks like Marietta was 12 years old - which agrees with the birth record.

Mrs. England Dies
Had Been a Resident of Raleigh County for Forty Years
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth England died at 8:45 Tuesday evening after an illness of some duration at her home on Calloway Street, she having attained the advanced age of 82 years, 10 months and 3 days. A native of Jackson county, she had been a resident of Raleigh county and Beckley for the past 35 or 40 years, and was well known to a large number of people of the community. She was the mother of E.T. England, for several years attorney general of the state of West Virginia. Before her marriage she was a Miss Welch.
Her husband died a number of years ago, but she is survived by five children they being E. T. England, of Charleston; James England, Bluefield; George England, Beckley; and Lillie and Blanche England, both of whom have married. She was a respected woman, whose friends and family will miss her much.
Funeral arrangements were planned by her before her death and the remains were buried in Oak Grove cemetery according to her wishes by Rev.Wm Ross Lloyd at ten o'clock on Thursday mornign. The following pallbearers were selected by her; Hugh A. Dunn, W. H. File, Walter Kent, D.D.Ashworth, D.L. Lilly, and J. H. Toy.

Mason County, WV Hardesty's Biographical Atlas 1882 - Volume 5, Page 50 PERSONAL HISTORY DEPARTMENT OF MASON COUNTY COOPER DISTRICT CLERMONT ELIAS ARNOLD - was born in Gilmer county, West Virginia, August 15, 1848, and became a resident in Mason county in 1866, settling on a farm in Cooper district. He served six months as a soldier during the war between the States, a member of Company I, 1st West Virginia Battery, Federal army. January 1, 1868, in Mason county, he was united in marriage with Nancy Ann Plants, who was born in Mason county, January 2, 1853. They have five living children, all at home, and lost by death their second born. These children were: Susan, born May 18, 1870; Henrietta, February 25, 1872, deceased; William A., April 28, 1874; Mary, March 2, 1876; Ira, September 7, 1878; Andrew J., August 25, 1879. Isaac and Mary (Lusher[sic]) Arnold, the parents of the subject of this sketch, are deceased, as are his wife's parents, Jacob and Nancy (Cooper) Plants. Mr. Arnold may be addressed at Beech Hill, Mason county, West Virginia.

The 1895 marriage record says Clermont Elias Arnold, age 47, was born in Gilmer County, West Virginia; his bride was Nettie May Roush, age 19, born in Mason County, West Virginia. They were married by James Fish on 16 Dec 1895 in Ravenswood, Mason Co., West Virginia. Nettie is not found with Clermont in the 1900 census.

Apparently something happened to the second wife, because Clermont went back to West Virginia for a third wife. This marriage took place 25 Dec 1900 in the home of C. Plants in Mason County to Maude Wise. Maude was 19 years old, born in Putnam County. Clermont is said to be 52 years old, born in Gilmer. I note that Clermont's first wife was Nancy Plants; wonder if this C. Plants was a relative of his first wife?
His death record is found in Mason County, WV saying he was married and had died of menengitis.
At the Find-a-Grave Memorial there is a photo of a small upright stone inscribed with his name and "Co 1, 1 Regt, VA VET INF"

JEMIMA KNOTTS LYNCHFOUND DEAD IN A WHEAT FIELD.
On Sunday, the 28th ult., at Altizer, W.Va., the family of George Lynch went to church, leaving Mrs. Lynch at home in usual good health. When they returned Mrs. Lynch was missing from the house. A search was instituted and she was found up a run above the house in a wheat field dead. It is supposed she went up to the field to turn out some cattle that had broken into the field, when from the worry she either had an attack of heart failure or epilepsy. Circumstances indicate that death had been sudden. Her arms were folded and she lay with her head down the hill. She was buried in the family grave yard, near her home, on the following Tuesday.
Mrs. Jemima Lynch was born in Harrison county in 1827 and was 65 years old when she died.
She was a sister of Capt. A. Knotts, of Grantsville, and William and Rufus Knotts, of Minnora, W. Va. She leaves a husband and large family, all of whom are going to mourn her loss.
She was a member of the M. E. Church, South, holding her membership at Arnoldsburg, W. Va. Her sudden and unexpected death has thrown a gloom over the entire neighborhood. No one in this county was better known, and to be known was to be loved. While all feel her loss keenly, we know that our loss is her gain; and lay her to rest until the trump of God shall call the nations of earth to judgement.

It is with a feeling of sadness and thoughts of the transitory nature of all earthly things that I write of the death of one generally known throughout the county and to a large number of the most prominent citizens of our State, and familiarly called "Uncle George Lynch," who died of fever, after a brief sickness of about a week, at his home on the West Fork, last Saturday, in the 84th year of his age. Uncle George was born in what is now Webster county, W. Va., but was one of the first settlers of this county. He was a good, honest, upright and useful citizen, having served the people of this county, faithfully as a surveyor. He also represented the county in the legislature for two terms. He was a most unassuming man and ever kept "In the even tenor of his way" and seemed alike unaffected by the allurements of fame or personal aggrandizement. A plain, common, sensible and useful man, and noted for his homely wit and good humor, being fond of innocent jest and mirth. Uncle George possessed many noble traits of character, such as patience, kindness, contentment, fidelity for duty and others. I have often thought that the words of Mill Brandon, "O what a blessed gift of heaven is a calm and serene spirit that wraps its possessor as it were in the sunlight and which like the radient cloud that proceed the (can't read) in the wilderness impart its moving brillancy to all beholders," were applicable to him. Uncle George married a sister of Capt. A. Knotts, who with several of their children have preceded him to the spirit realm, yet there are other children and grand-children left to mourn his loss. To all of who we tender our sympathy. We do not know whether Uncle George ever made a public profession of religion or not, be that as it may, "The Kingdom of God is (?) here or (?) there! I cometh not with observation but (?) to God and his fellow man, and therefore sorrow not as those without hope, trusting that All is well with his soul.""Life's duty done as sinks the clay, (day?)

GEORGE LYNCH, JR.
George Lynch, Jr., son of George and Mary (Gregory) Lynch, was
born on Williams River, Nicholas County, Virginia (now West
Virginia), February 14, 1813. His parents both died in Gilmer County,
this state, his father in 1860, and his mother in 1875, but he has
made his home in what is now Calhoun County since 1843. In that year
he left Gilmer County, and settled on West Fork, building a mill near
where he now lives.
In Arnoldsburg, this county, February 15, 1843, the words were
spoken joining in one the lives of George Lynch, Jr., and Jemima
Knotts, and the years that have ensued have given them fourteen
children, born: Mary, January 22, 1844; Joseph K., and Julia Ann,
December 18, 1845; Pembroke, May 28, 1848, died October 1, 1872;
Louisa, November 17, 1851; Rufus, August 14, 1853, died November 7,
1858; Amy, March 15, 1856; Sarah E., May 1, 1858; Almira E., October
16, 1860; Leuverna S., January 28, 1862, died December 25, 1866;
Kosciuske and Pulaski, April 16, 1866, died January 18 and 19, 1867,
respectively; George L., January 14, 1868; Matilda J., September 28,
1870.
The wife of Mr. Lynch was born September 18, 1827, in Harrison
County, then in Virginia, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Arnold)
Knotts. Her father is now deceased, her mother living in Washington
district, Calhoun County.
George Lynch, Jr., has served Calhoun County in many official
positions, From 1854-56 he was justice of the peace; 1856, for a
number of years was surveyor for the county, serving until ill health
forced him to resign; in 1870 he represented Calhoun and Gilmer
Counties in the legislature, and 1771-72, he was representative from
Calhoun and Ritchie Counties. Farming and surveying now occupy his

ABSALOM KNOTTS
Absalom Knotts, attorney-at-law and farmer, was born in Harrison County, Virginia, December 11, 1830, and was a resident here when Calhoun County was organized. Joseph and Mary (Arnold) Knotts, the former now deceased, were his parents, and in the county of his birth, November 26, 1850, he wedded Prudence Arnold, who was born in Harrison County April 7, 1827. She was a daughter of Simon and Prudence (Webb) Arnold, and her father is no longer living, his death occurring in September 1854.
During the war between the States, Absalom Knotts served two and one-half years in the Confederate Army as captain of Company E, 14th Virginia Cavalry, and was in battle at Winchester, Gettysburg, Brandy Station, and in numerous skirmishes. He was taken prisoner in August, 1864, and held until the close of the war.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Knotts are six, all living in Calhoun County. They were born: Mary, October 28, 1851; Simon A., March 18, 1853; Minnora E., April 5, 1855; Joseph, September 21, 1856; Louise, April 6, 1858; Edward C., May 14, 1860.
Absalom Knotts has served one year as constable, as justice of the peace about one year, and as presiding justice of the court four years. He has been representative to the State Legislature one year while Calhoun was represented in the Virginia Assembly, and one year at the West Virginia Legislature. For eight years he has been, and still is, the postmaster at Minnora, Calhoun County, West Virginia. (Linda Fluharty)Absalom Knotts (1830-1900) married Prudence Arnold, he was a early political leader and sheriff, Confederate soldier taken prisoner in 1864 to the end of the war. Col. D. S. Deweese said of Knotts "War clouds settling dense amid heavy...men of progressive minds and active turns could not...remain silent and inactive...a man of marked ability, stirring qualities and a natural born leader"

MRS. ABSOLUM KNOTTS
News of the death of Mrs. A. Knotts, of Minnora, reached here early Monday morning. Mrs. Knotts was the widow of the late Captain A. Knotts, one of the best known and highly honored and respected gentlemen our country has ever produced, and the deceased was one of the very best women the country has ever known. She was formerly a resident of Grantsville, and had a host of friends here who are sorry to hear of her death. She was nearly ninety years old and had been in poor health for some months prior to her death, which occurred at the home of Mrs. A. E. Eismon, who was the widow of her son E. C. Knotts. Interment took place at Minnora cemetery Tuesday of this week.

Mrs. Sarah Jane Knotts, one of Calhoun county's olders [sic] and most highly respected women, died here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. A. Witt, of Mill Street, last Saturday night. Mrs. Knotts was 94 years of age and her death was due to disease incident to her advanced age.
Mrs. Knotts was born at Palistine, W.Va., and was a daughter of John and Mary Knotts, pioneer residents of Wirt and Jackson counties. She was married November 3, 1857, to William Knotts and shortly thereafter the young couple came to Calhoun county and settled in the then wilderness of Left Hand of the West Fork. The husband became one of the leading citizens of that section of the county and had much to do with making it a fertile and productive community. Mrs. Knotts kept her part of the bargain by making a comfortable and hospitable home that was known far and wide. Mrs. Knotts was a high type of Christian womanhood and was loved and respected by all who came in contact with her. In early life she united with Ebenezer Baptist Church and remained a faithful and consistent member until her death.
The deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. David Hamrick, of Farmtown; Mrs. D. O. Chenoweth, of Nicut; Mrs. C. A. Witt, of Grantsville; Mrs. Massa Jones, of Tulsa, Okla.; William H. Knotts, of Vinton, Ohio; G. Warren Knotts, of Euclid, and Robert J. Knotts, of Dodrill. Seven children also preceded the deceased in death. A sister, Mrs. Amanda Howard, also survives.
Funeral services were held from the local Baptist church Wednesday afternoon by Rev. N. H. Bartlett, a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attending, after which interment was made in Knotts Chapel cemetery, near Orma.

I have found a birth record (1 June 1878) for Dora and a marriage reccord for Massa; age 18 when she married in 1896. That is an estimated birth year of 1878. I have found NO other records for either Dora or Massa. The image on Massa's marriage record could be read as Massa D. Knotts, but it's not clear enough to be proof. Dora is listed on the 1880 census, but Massa is not. It is my assumption that Massa and Dora are the same person.
Later info rec'd from Ann Newell on Calhoun County Rootsweb msg board quoting from the Knotts book by Opal (Knotts) Weekley: "Massa Donna Knotts b 1 June 1878 d Oct 1936 md Charles Jones 16 Oct 1896. They lived in Huston, Texas. She is listed as d/o William Knotts & Sarah Jane Knotts. No more info is known."
The obituary of her mother Sarah Jane Knotts Knotts in 1934 said Mrs. Massa Jones, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, survived her mother.

Rufus Knotts, son of Joseph and Mary (Arnold) Knotts, was born April 11, 1830, in Jackson County, Virginia, and was living here at the time the county was organized, as were his parents. His father is now deceased, his death occurring on the 12th of March 1855.
In Weston, Lewis County, Virginia, February 2, 1859, Rufus Knotts and Matilda H. Flesher were joined in wedlock, and their children are seven living, one deceased, born:

Elizabeth J., November 24, 1861, died December 29, 1865;
William R., July 18, 1863;

Matilda H. Flesher was born in Weston, Lewis County, April 24, 1832, a daughter of Elijah and Nancy (Lewis) Flesher. Her father died in October, 1862.
Rufus Knotts served three years in the Confederate Army, in Company E, 14th Virginia Cavalry, and was in battle at Gettysburg, Williamsport, Sheppardstown, Martinsburg, and many others; and was taken prisoner and held one year, about ten months of the time at Camp Chase, Ohio.
He has been two years justice of the peace, deputy sheriff three years, overseer of the poor three years, and for two years has represented Calhoun County in the State Legislature. His business is farming, and his address is Minnora, Calhoun County, West Virginia.

Mrs. Jane Chenoweth, one of the prominent women of Calhoun county and well known in all sections of the county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Corder, from the effects of a stroke of paralysis early Monday morning of last week.
Mrs. Chenoweth was the widow of the late Robert Chenoweth, of Washington district, who died about twelve years ago. She was born at Weston 83 years ago and before marriage was Miss Jane Knotts, a member of one of the state's most prominent families. She was a high type of Christian womanhood and was possessed of sterling traits of character that endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. The news of her demise will be heard with regret in all sections of the county.

Springson (Springston?) of Spencer, ____ __ Riddle of Billings, Mrs. Eva Robinson of Harrisville, Wood and K_____ Chenoweth of Minnora, and Wheeler Chenoweth of Arnoldsburg.

GEORGE LYNCH, JR.
George Lynch, Jr., son of George and Mary (Gregory) Lynch, was
born on Williams River, Nicholas County, Virginia (now West
Virginia), February 14, 1813. His parents both died in Gilmer County,
this state, his father in 1860, and his mother in 1875, but he has
made his home in what is now Calhoun County since 1843. In that year
he left Gilmer County, and settled on West Fork, building a mill near
where he now lives.
In Arnoldsburg, this county, February 15, 1843, the words were
spoken joining in one the lives of George Lynch, Jr., and Jemima
Knotts, and the years that have ensued have given them fourteen
children, born: Mary, January 22, 1844; Joseph K., and Julia Ann,
December 18, 1845; Pembroke, May 28, 1848, died October 1, 1872;
Louisa, November 17, 1851; Rufus, August 14, 1853, died November 7,
1858; Amy, March 15, 1856; Sarah E., May 1, 1858; Almira E., October
16, 1860; Leuverna S., January 28, 1862, died December 25, 1866;
Kosciuske and Pulaski, April 16, 1866, died January 18 and 19, 1867,
respectively; George L., January 14, 1868; Matilda J., September 28,
1870.
The wife of Mr. Lynch was born September 18, 1827, in Harrison
County, then in Virginia, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Arnold)
Knotts. Her father is now deceased, her mother living in Washington
district, Calhoun County.
George Lynch, Jr., has served Calhoun County in many official
positions, From 1854-56 he was justice of the peace; 1856, for a
number of years was surveyor for the county, serving until ill health
forced him to resign; in 1870 he represented Calhoun and Gilmer
Counties in the legislature, and 1771-72, he was representative from
Calhoun and Ritchie Counties. Farming and surveying now occupy his
time, and Arnoldsburg, Calhoun County, West Virginia is his address.Transcribed by Linda Fluharty

But this child wasn't on the 1860 census and his sister Mary Matilda was born in Mar 1859. So this child is suspect but I left it in the record hoping to find some answers. In the 1900 census, his mother says she has had 18 children; and if this child is included, that makes 18 children for her. Please email me if you have any answers to this.

A picture of the Chenoweth marker looks like the birth date of Fenton West says he was born in 1860; but the census transcription on the Calhoun County site says 1868. His estimated birth year based on age at marriage is abt 1861, so I'm assuming that I'm reading the marker correctly and am using the 1860 date.

Why her name on the 1900 census was Dorre E. is unknown, but I am assuming the birth date was accurate. Even though the carving on the gravestone shows a birth date of 1879 and a death date of 1902. There is no mention of a husband on the grave marker. The picture was provided by Jack Springston and his rootsweb chart has much more on this family than I do.
