2122. Alice Jackson-18587

Wedding announcement and comment contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:
The Newtown Register, Thursday, January 4, 1877, Page 5, Column 5:

MARRIED:

ROSEMON—JACKSON—On Monday evening, December 25, by the Rev. Alexander Graham, Cornelius P. Rosemon of N. Y. city, to Alice, daughter of Colonel Downing Jackson of Astoria, L. I.

Note: I assume that the original dispatch was handwritten, and that someone misinterpreted “Coe Downing Jackson” as “Col. Downing Jackson”; hence the erroneous listing of her father as “Colonel Downing Jackson”.
----------------------
There is a strong possibility that Alice is the same daughter recorded in the 1860 & 1870 censuses as Sarah E. Alice is not shown in those census records and Sarah E. is not shown in records after 1870. In 1900 Alice gives her birthdate as January 1853; Sarah E.'s estimated birth year from the 1860 and 1870 censuses is about 1853. They could be two different daughters but it is strange that Alice does not show up until 1880 when she has married to Cornelius Rosemon. Alice is proved a daughter later by administration documents as she shares equally with Coe's other children in the estate of her Aunt Fannie Marie Duryea Brewer. In 1900 Emma, a daughter of Coe and his wife, shows as a sister-in-law living with Cornelius Roseman and his wife Alice.

The following two death notices for Alice Jackson Rosemon were contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Wednesday, August 9, 1939, Page 9, Column 2:
“ROSEMON—In Glen Rock, N. J., on Tuesday, Aug. 8, ALICE, beloved widow of Cornelius Price Rosemon. Funeral services on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E. J. Mulligan, 43 Henry St., Glen Rock, at 2:30 p.m. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.”

The New York Times, August 9, 1939, Page 22:
“ROSEMON—In Glen Rock, N. J., on Tuesday, Aug. 8, Alice, beloved widow of Cornelius Price Rosemon. Funeral services on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E. J. Mulligan, 43 Henry St., Glen Rock, at 2:30 P. M. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.”

Cornelius Price Rosemon-18588

His middle name taken from his wife's obituary. The following death notice and info about his paintings were contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:

The City College Quarterly, Volume 6 (1910), published at the College of the City of New York.
“CORNELIUS P. ROSEMON, 71, died recently after several years of declining health, due to the strain of business. In college days he was distinguished by a very pleasing manner and a certain deliberate and quiet humor, which he expressed not only in what he said, but also by a gift of caricature, which in those days his classmates thought evinced much talent in that direction.”

Note: The “71” after his name indicates that he was a member of the class of 1871 [not his age]. Based on the date of the volume of this publication and the fact that he is listed in the 1910 Census, I would surmise that he died in 1910.

Further evidence of his existence between 1905 and 1910 was found in the form of three paintings for sale on an Internet auction website: http://www.northeastauctions.com/search/detail.php?l=257&a=feb07

The landscape painting of a farm is accompanied by the description

“VIEW OF FANNIE JACKSON'S FARM, INWOOD, LONG ISLAND, AND TWO SHORE SCENES BY CORNELIUS PRICE ROSEMON.
Sold: $1,276.00 ($1,276)
Each watercolor on paper, the first 5 ½ x 8 ½ inches, signed "C.P. Rosemon" and dated Feb. '06, l.r. The two 9 x 13 ½ inches and 6 ¼ x 13 inches, sight, each signed and dated '07. l.r.”

So part of his therapy for his ill health must have been painting. I assume that the “Fannie Jackson” who owned the farm was Fanney B. Jackson-14900, Alice’s sister

4418. Fannie Winifred Rosemon-18592

The following engagement announcements contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha. I (Janie) have been unable to learn if, when or where the marriage actually took place. Winifred is not listed with her parents on the 1910 census.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Wednesday October 2, 1907, Page 4, Column 1:

“Announcement is made of the engagement of Miss F. Winifred Rosemon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Rosemon of Bensonhurst, to Guy Richard Gregory of Chicago.”

2130. Frederick Way Jackson Sr.-5619

Notes Contributed by Frank M. Jackson:

"Fletcher Family Bible

"In the 1860 US Census entry for Edward Jackson (T7-11170:170, Ward 7), Frederick is listed as a nine year old son of Edward.

"Frederick Way Jackson was a drummer in Battery A, Eleventh Brigade, Second Division of the National Guard of New York State on 5 June 1865 according to a certificate issued by the unit and subsequently endorsed on 7 July 1867 , 5 July 1868 and 27 Oct 1868.

"On 26 Oct 1870 Everett Wheeler and Lydia L. Wheeler deeded land to Abel Crook, referee for Frederick W. Jackson (Kings Co, Liber 968: 470).

"On 27 Oct 1875 Abel Crook, referee, and Frederick W. Jackson, guardian of self, deeded property (Kings Co, Liber 1219: 330) to Patrick Williams. This recording of transfer of title reflects a transaction that took place in 1870-71.The Supreme Court of the City of Brooklyn ordered the sale of Hay Scale Farm on 1 March 1870. This indenture dated 14 Oct 1875 records the sale of Hay Scale Farm by the court appointed referee, Abel Crook on behalf of William G. Low, guardian for Frederick W. Jackson on 6 March 1871 to Patrick Williams for three thousand dollars. The property borders Old Bedford Road and Quincy Street. Frederick Way Jackson was born 21 Sept 1850 and was, therefore, under the age of 21 at the time of the sale. He is therefore, legally, an 'infant'. The property was described on a Commissioners map on 14 Sept 1863. David E. Wheeler is identified as 'defendant' in the matter and Frederick W. Jackson as the 'plaintiff'. The basis for this is not clear. The biography of Frederick Way Jackson in Hazelton's The Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens Counties of Nassau and Suffolk claims that Frederick was born at Hay Scale Farm.

"A notice in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle 30 Nov 1868, p. 4 announces this transaction and calls for all who may have claims against this property to come forward by 2 Jan 1869. The property is described on a Map of Commissioners Partition of the Hay Scale Farms filed 14 Sept 1863 in the Office of the Register of the County of Kings (map # 672). It consists of 53 lots. A more complete description of the property can be found in the original complaint filed in the Office of the Clerk of the County of Kings on 22 Aug 1868. Also listed with Frederick Way Jackson are David E. Wheeler, Mary L. Jackson, Jacob S. Jackson,Tillie A.R. Jackson and Ella D. C. Jackson.

"Hay Scale Farms was part of a larger property often described as Jackson Hollow or the Jackson Estate which originally had been purchased by Samuel Jackson. Since Samuel was a bachelor he probably left his very large and valuable holdings to his nephews and nieces. (The will and probate records for the period in Kings County are missing.) The property that John Jackson had in trust and went to court for permission to sell was part of this Jackson estate.

"On 5 March 1885 Frederick W. Jackson, Florence F. Jackson and George R. Jackson, by attorney, deeded property (Kings Co, Liber 1595: 331) to Thomas H. Harmer. Also included as grantees in this transaction: Elizabeth (Lizzie) A. Hastings & Andrew K. Hastings, Edward O. Jackson, Tille A. R. Edgar & Frederick H. Edgar, and Ella D. C. Jackson.

"In the 1900 US Census (Ward 9-roll 1048, vol. 69, ED 113, sheet 14, p.40) Frederick Jackson is listed as having been born 1850, and age 49. He was born In NY and works as a bank secretary. He lives in a rented residence. Also listed : wife, Florence G. Jackson, age 44, born in NY; son, George F. Jackson, bookkeeper, age 20. born in NY; son, Frank F. Jackson, shipping clerk, age 19, born in NY.

"Frederick W. Jackson is listed in the 1890 NYC Directory as a broker at 30 Broad with his house in Brooklyn. In the 1904 Brooklyn City Directory he is listed as a bookkeeper with his house at 12 Spenser Ct. He is listed in the 1908 Directory as a secretary at Court at the corner of Remsen with his house at 563 5th. In the 1933 Directory he is listed as President of the Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn at 9 DeKalb.

"Frederick W. Jackson is listed in the 1910 US Census ( 24th Ward,District 624, AD 17.T624,roll 974, p44) as head of household living with his wife Florence on Pacific Ave in rented quarters. He is age 59. married for 30 years and serving as a Bank Vice (President, no doubt). He and his parents were both born in New York. His wife, Florence, is listed as age 60, born in NY with no occupation. She is listed as having had two children, both of whom are living. Her father was born in New Hampshire; her mother's birth place is illegible.

"Frederick W. Jackson is listed in the 1920 US Census (T625, roll 1162, Ed 1646, sheet 1A) incorrectly as Fred J. Jackson. He is listed as age 67, employed as treasurer of a bank, having been born in NY as was his father. His mother is listed as born in MA while Frederick's wife's mother is listed as born in NY. These are switched. Florence F. Jackson is listed as his wife, age 62 with her father and mother listed as born in NY. This is not correct. Also listed in the household is grandson, Fred W. Jackson the 2nd, age 12, enrolled in school and born in NY.

"In a biographical sketch included in vol. 7 of The Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens Counties of Nassau and Suffolk Frederick is described as a Long Island native whose family had been farmers. It reports that his grandfather, John Jackson, a farmer, had been a member of Tammany and had sold the land to the US government for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This is incorrect. His grandfather was a different John Jackson who had, indeed, been a farmer. The John Jackson who sold the land to the US government was his great uncle.

"The sketch goes on to mention that Frederick was born in Brooklyn on 21 Sept 1850 where he got his education in the local public schools. He first worked for fifteen years for auctioneers, L.M. Hoffman of New York City. He then joined with Andrew K. Hastings in the glass business for about ten years. He then worked in the Banking Department of the State of New York for five years when he joined the Dime Savings Bank of New York in 1894.

"He served at the Bank for eleven years as chief clerk and was then made Secretary, the only person at the time to to have worked himself up from the floor to become an officer. In 1916 he was chosen to be Treasurer. He is also a director of the Security Safe Deposit Company of Brooklyn.

"When he was young Frederick served with the Third Field Artillery of Brooklyn, making the rank of sergeant.

"He is a member of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the Merchants Association of New York, the Society of Old Brooklynites, Brooklyn Bankers Club, the Brooklyn Juvenile Protective Association, the American Automobile Association, the Montauk Club and the Brooklyn Riding and Driving Club. He attends the Congregational Church.

"Frederick married Florence Gale Fletcher of Brooklyn in 1879; they are the parents of one son, Frank F. Jackson.

"On 12 July 1929 Frederick was appointed President of the Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn at which he had been employed for 36 years. The writeup announcing this in a local publication, Brooklyn Life and Activities of Long Island Society, mentions that Frederick was a devoted baseball fan with a prodigious knowledge of the game. He is father of Frank Fletcher Jackson, senior member of the cotton converting firm of Jackson & Walker of 54 Leonard Street, Manhattan.

"Frederick's will is dated 21 October 1931 and is recorded at the Kings Co courthouse in file 189-32. In his will he identifies as his beneficiaries Robert Jackson, grandson; Albert Hutton, no relation; Frank F. Jackson, son; Frederick W. Jackson, grandson; Marie T. Clark, no relation. The inventory of his estate shows an appraisal of $48,387.07 as the 'gross estate' and $33,839.40 as the 'net estate'. It lists his residence- a leased apartment- as Apt 6A at 225 Lincoln Place, Brooklyn, NY.

"To his grandson, Robert Jackson, he bequeaths $500.00 To his son, Frank F. Jackson, he bequeaths his motor car (a Cadillac) with its accessories and insurance and the ring with a diamond which he now wears. He also grants him one half of the remainder of his estate after the enumerated bequests.

"To his grandson, Frederick W. Jackson gives his diamond cuff buttons, diamond scarf pin and the Hamilton watch, chain and locket he now wears. He also gives him the remaining one half of his estate.

"To his friend, Albert T. Hutton, he gives his wrist watch. Albert is his named executor.

"The inventory reports the interest each heir has in the estate:Robert Jackson- $500.00; Albert Hutton- $5.00; Frank F. Jackson- $12,160.45; Frederick W. Jackson- $9,249.59; Marie T. Clark $11,934.36. The latter person was given securities on 24 Feb 1931-53 shares of AT&T in the amount of $10,573.50. She was Marie T. Clark of 1054 76th St., Brooklyn, NY.

"An attached schedule of payments owed indicates that Frederick had a maid-Lucy Wooten and a chauffeur- Henry Schlessinger.

"Frederick Way Jackson's death is recorded on certificate # A 20350 of the Department of Health of New York City and shows that he died at 3:30 p.m. on 2 January 1932, that his usual residence was 225 Lincoln Pl., that he died of bronchial pneumonia and myocarditis with cardiac dilatation. His father is listed as John H. Jackson which is not correct and his mother is listed as Mary L. Anthony which is correct.

"In a page one obituary in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 3 Jan 1932, it is reported that Frederick died at the home of his son, Frank F. Jackson at 264 84th Street, Brooklyn of bronchial pneumonia where he had lived since the death of his wife. They had lived at 225 Lincoln Place in Brooklyn.

"It reports that Frederick had been a member of the advisory board of the Hamilton Trust branch of the Chase National bank, a director of the National Title Guaranty Company and a director of the Guaranteed Title and Mortgage Company. He is described as a known authority on savings banks. Frederick had also served as bank examiner for the State banking Department under Charles M. Preston and Frederick G. Kilburn.

"In addition to the clubs mentioned earlier we learn that he was a member of the Army and Navy Association.

"The obituary tell us that he was born on Hay Scales farm in Brooklyn which was land that had been part of the land owned by his grandfather, John Jackson, who sold land to the Us government for the Navy Yard. (This misinformation was perpetuated throughout the family and down the generations.)

"The obituary refers to an editorial in the Eagle of July 1929 which spoke of 'energy, his poise, his character.'

"The funeral services were scheduled to be held at the Fairchild Chapel at 86 Lefferts Place at 2:30 with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

"Frederick Way Jackson is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY in Section 61, plot # 12665. He is buried with his wife but his stone bears no dates."

This transcription of his obit is provided by Jerry Gross. His obit was published in the New York Times on 11 Mar 1890.

Samuel C. Jackson who died of heart disease at his family residence, Flushing Bay, L.I., was well and favorably know in the New York jewelry trade for over forty years. When seventeen years old he quitted his home in Glen Cove and became a clerk in the big jewelry house of S.P. Williams at 19 Maiden-lane. He left there to serve with Platt Brothers, and in the years that followed he was associated as a partner with the firms of Matag & Jackson, 15 John-street. His firm, which was subsequently known as Ignatius Sturn and Samuel C. Jackson, did a large business and had two important branch houses at Paris and Amsterdam in 1870.

Mr. Jackson began business alone at 180 Broadway and continued it up to his death. He was a large property holder on both the north and south sides of Long Island. The bulk of this land was derived from the Indians by his ancestors, and the deeds contain the curious attestations of the red men. Mr. Jackson's father, the Hon. Thomas B. Jackson, was a Congressman from New York in the early years of the century. The old Jackson mill yet standing was built by one of Mr. Jackson's ancestors over 150 years ago.

A widow and six children survive the dead merchant. The funeral services will be held at St. George's Church, Flushing, L.I., at 3 o'clock today.

Elizabeth and William had only one child who lived only 3 months. She died the day the baby was born. If these folks were Quakers, the marriage date is likely a year off, being in January.

2180. Jacob Willets Jackson-23735

The Underhill source book says that Jacob was born in Brooklyn, New York. But his parents' family home was in Oyster Bay and they were enumerated in Oyster Bay both in 1850 and 1860. I am assuming Oyster Bay was the location of his birth.

Page 16:

“Shortly after the Revolution, Townsend Jackson [i.e. Townsend Jackson-970, great-great-uncle of Jacob Willits Jackson] purchased several hundred acres at the corner of what is now Jericho Turnpike and the north-south street that was then called Oyster Bay Road. The property, which extended as far north as Teibrook Avenue, passed through several generations and eventually belonged to Jacob W. Jackson, the owner of a large trucking concern in New York. In Jackson’s day, the trucks were pulled by horses, which he brought out to his ranch every so often for a few days of rest. The thoroughfare that paralleled the Jackson property was later named Jackson Avenue. (Carl Baker.)” Included in this article is a picture of this beautiful homestead.

Dr. Troha continues: The next piece of information is a death notice for Jacob Willits Jackson:

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Wednesday, December 30, 1936, Page 11, Column 2:

“JACKSON—JACOB WILLITS, on fourth day, twelfth month, thirtieth [i.e. Wednesday, December 30, 1936], JACOB WILLITS JACKSON, husband of Ella Albertson. Services at his late residence, Syosset, Long Island, three P.M. fifth day, twelfth month, thirty-first. Please omit flowers.”

Ella Albertson-23771

Notes contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha from the Underhill Genealogy source record, pg 430: "Ella Albertson b 1863 d Aug 14, 1952 Glen Cove, LINY m 1st 1887 Eugene F. Robbins b Sep. 7, 1859 son of Stephen and Esther G. (Carpenter) Robbins m 2nd Jacob Willits Jackson b Jan. 24, 1858 Brooklyn, NY d Dec.30, 1936 Syosset, LINY, no issue. she had three children by Robbins, all of whom were adopted by Jacob W. Jackson and used the name of Jackson."

So this indicates that the children of Ella's bearing the surname “Jackson” are actually the adopted children of Eugene F. Robbins, and they and their descendants are not genetically related to the Hempstead Jackson’s.
This relationship is further confirmed through Jericho Quaker Records posted on-line:

From the website http://dunhamwilcox.net/ny/jericho_ny_quakers.htm, one finds
“ROBBINS - ALBERTSON
Eugene F. Robbins, born 7 of 9m, 1859, son of Stephen and Esther G. Robbins. Married 13 of 4m, 1887 to Ella Albertson.”
[this is Eugene F. Robbins’ marriage to Ella Albertson]

“ROBBINS
Stephen Ferris Robbins, born 25 of 4m, 1888, son of Eugene H. and Ella A. Robbins.
Florence Robbins, born 1 of 12m, 1889, dau of Eugene H. and Ella A. Robbins.”
[these are the first two children born to Eugene F. Robbins and his wife, Ella Albertson]

From website:http://longislandgenealogy.com/1891/Marriages/Grooms_JK.html - "Jackson, M. Franklin and Jackson, Annie, daughter of Ansel T. Jackson, married 10 October 1894 at Jericho in a Quaker marriage ceremony."

Mathew and his wife Annie Titus Jackson were 6th cousins; their common ancestor being Col. John Jackson, s/o Robert of Hempstead, Queens Co., New York.

From website:www.longislandgenealogy.com/jackson/fam00139.htm: " d. 3 November 1895 at Jericho; consumption of the kidneys; internment at Jericho; son of Sidney W. Jackson; son-in-law of Ansel T. Obituaries contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:

WILLET HICKS, son of the late William Hicks, died yesterday [i.e. Sunday, June 16, 1912] at Glen Cove, Long Island. He was seventy-nine years old. The funeral will be held at the home of his daughter, Miss Gertrude Hicks, at Glen Cove, on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock.”

WILLET HICKS, an old resident of Glen Cove, L. I., died there on Sunday [i.e. Sunday, June 16, 1912] at the age of 79. He was the son of the late William Hicks and the father of Miss Gertrude Hicks of Glen Cove.”

Sarah Appleby Mott-8716

On the 1900 census Sarah said she had had 9 children, but only four were now living. So Robert had died by 1900.

Notes contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:
The New York Times, January 4, 1913, Page 9:

“HICKS.—At Glen Cove, L. I., on the sixth day, first month, 3d, 1913, Sarah Appleby Mott, widow of the late Willet Hicks and daughter of the late Leonard and Hannah Willis Mott, in the 81st year of her age. Funeral services will be held at the residence of her daughter, Gertrude Hicks Hill, Glen Cove, L. I., on (Sunday,) first day, first month, 5th, 1913, at 1 P. M. Carriages will meet train arriving at Glen Cove at 12:26.”

Note that Sarah Mott Hicks was a strict Quaker, so the dates are given in that format. Note that the date of death is January 3, 1913, not June 3, 1913 as your database current states. Here, her daughter is called “Gertrude Hicks Hill”, but I do not know if that means that she married a man with the surname Hill in the time period between her parents’ deaths, or if it is a typographical error. I was unable to find any announcements for a “Hill–Hicks” wedding.

4437. Caroline Rogers Hicks-23680

See census records in her father's Notes for analysis of her birth year.

The following notes contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:

The Long-Islander, Friday, July 19, 1901 (Volume LXV, Number 47, Whole Number 3375, Page 1, Column 4):
“Nassau News.

Senator William Willets Cocks, of Old Westbury, is to become a benedict, the fortunate young woman being Miss Carolyn Rogers Hicks, daughter of Willet Hicks, of Locust Valley. The ceremony will be performed according to the custom of the Society of Friends at the meeting in the Friends' Meeting house, Fifteenth street, Manhattan, on Wednesday, July 24, at 12 o’clock.”

The wedding was subsequently described in a New York Times article, which provides us with a middle initial for Gertrude:

The New York Times, July 25, 1901, Page 7:

“A MARRIAGE OF QUAKERS
-------------------------
State Senator Cocks and Miss Caroline Rogers Hicks United.
---------------
Ceremony in the New York Meeting House in Accordance with the Rules of the Society of Friends.
----------
State Senator William Willets Cocks and Miss Caroline Rogers Hicks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willet Hicks of Locust Valley, L. I., were married yesterday morning according to the custom in the Society of Friends. The ceremony took place at the Friends Meeting House on Fifteenth Street in this city, in the presence of a large congregation.

Following the rules of the Society of Friends, of which the groom is a prominent member, the marriage was announced in the meeting at Westbury, some time ago, and the usual committees appointed, which gave their consent for the ceremony to take place in the New York Meeting House. The committee representing the society consisted of Benjamin D. Hicks, of Old Westbury, Mrs. Catherine M. Willets of Old Westbury, Augustus G. Cock, and Mrs. Augustus G. Cock of Locust Valley.

The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Gertrude L. Hicks, and the groom by her brother, Frederick C. Hicks [sic: this is an erroneous assumption made by the reporter; Frederick Cocks Hicks is in fact William Willets Cocks’ half-brother]. The bride's dress was of fawn-colored poplin, trimmed with velvet and Renaissance lace. Her hat was of yellow straw and chiffon.

Promptly at 11 o’clock they took their places and repeated to one another the usual vows, after which each signed the certificate, which was parchment, 20 by 30 inches. Following the bridegroom many others signed the certificate as witnesses, this privilege being granted to all those who desired it. The marriage is with one exception the first among Long Island Friends that has taken place in meeting for twenty years. Senator Cocks is prominent in the Society of Friends and is Trustee of the society. He is a son of Isaac and Mary Cocks of Westbury. The bride’s family is also closely identified with the Society of Friends.”
~~~~~~~
So the two sisters are: Caroline Rogers Hicks and Gertrude L. Hicks. Note that the New York Times reporter spelt her first name “Caroline”, which differs from the marriage announcement which used “Carolyn”, but all subsequent articles about her spell her name “Caroline”, so I assume that this form is accurate.
~~~~~~~
Tragically, the happy life that Caroline Hicks Cocks sought was not to be, for she passed away five months after her marriage:

New York NY Tribune, Saturday, December 28, 1901, Page 7, Column 5:

“COCKS—On Sixth Day, 27th of 12th month. Caroline Hicks, wife of William W. Cocks, of Westbury, Long Island. Friends are invited to attend, the funeral, at Friends’ Meeting House, Westbury, on First Day, the 29th of 12th month, at 11 a. m. Carriages will meet train leaving Long Island City at 10 o’clock. Kindly omit flowers.”

The following contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha: [For brevity, only the relevant segments of his obituary are quoted here.]

The Long-Islander, Friday, May 27, 1932, Page 8 of Section 2, Column 1:

“MAYOR WM. COCKS DIES AT OLD WESTBURY
---------------
William Willets Cocks, Mayor of Old Westbury, and former Representative from the first New York district, and president of the State Council of Agriculture and Markets, died at his home at Old Westbury Tuesday [i.e. Tuesday, May 24, 1932]. He had been in ill health for a year, but was able to ride last month. April 15 he was thrown from his horse, suffering a fractured skull, and had failed rapidly since then. He was seventy years old.

Mr. Cocks was born in Old Westbury July 24, 1861. His father, Isaac Hicks Cocks, and his mother, Mary Titus Willets, were members of old Long Island families. Both, too, were members of the Society of Friends, and in this society William Willets Cocks was educated. All his life he was active in its affairs.
...
[The details of his educational background and political career are omitted for brevity, but his obituary notes that he was a personal friend of Theodore Roosevelt, which agrees with the newspaper article from 1918.]
...
Mr. Cock’s first wife, Miss Caroline Hicks, of Locust Valley, died soon after their marriage in 1901.
...
[The obituary concludes with details about his second wife, their two sons, and his sister, all of whom survived him.]”
