The following notes by Linda Garner:
"Confederate Military Records show that Jesse L. Jackson enlisted as Pvt. 9 May 1862, at Dublin, Alabama, Co., D, 3rd. Battalion, Hilliard's Legion. Hilliard's Legion was dissolved 25 November 1863 and parts of the First and Third were consolidated and formed the 60th. AL, under Col. J.W.A. Sanford. Jesse was a farmer, living in Oak Grove, Alabama, age 27, married. Jesse was wounded severely in the right hand 16 July 1864 in the trenches near Petersburg, Virginia, causing the loss of the middle fingers.

"Report of Lt. Col. John W.A. Sanford, Third Battalion, Hilliard's (AL) Legion in the field, near Chattanooga, 26 September 1863. On the 19th, a line of battle was formed on the banks of Chicamauga Creek. They began to advance on the 20th., with 211 enlisted men and 18 officers, 229 in all. Of this number 4 were killed and 42 wounded. The conduct of the officers and men during the battle cannot be to highly commended. All did their duty so well that it is difficult to mention one as particularly distinguished wihtout being unjust to others. Among the enlisted men, Jesse L. Jackson of Co. D, acted with notable courage. Jesse was paroled in Montgomery Co., AL, 1 June 1865.

"Jesse and Martha resided in Montgomery Co., Alabama until 1867, when he and brother John Kirby removed to Lafayette Co., Florida. Martha Jane died 1875, Mayo, Lafayette Co., FL. Jesse died 8 January 1885. Both are buried in Maypop Cemetery, Lafayette Co., FL."

On this 1880 census Lou Ellen (Lavenia) Jackson & husband Seaborn J. Pierson are living next hh to her brother Benjamin and his wife Candasier Jane.

1963. Benjamin D. Jackson-10491

David Cowher has Benjamin's middle initial as 'D'. So does the record of Kim Poole sent by Cecil Revell. Kim's record "Benjamin D. Jackson, born December 12, 1842, in Dublin, Montgomery Co., Alabama. He married Jane Sloan." So this appears to be a conflict in his wife's name, but later info in Candasier's Notes explains this.

A descendant, Janis Owens posted this: "This is my gggrandmother. Her name is Candasier Jane Troxel (sometimes listed as Stronxill or a variation.) She was from Kentucky, married Ben when he was stationed in KY in the Civil War. She was a Cherokee Indian from the KY Troxel family." And this gggranddaughter has verified that the 1900 census below is the right Benjamin and his family. A potential problem I saw is that in the 1900 census it is said that Candace had six children. The gggrandaughter says Benjamin and Candasier had 7 children. And finding the 1880 census with the older 4 children plus George who is the same George with two other children in the 1900 census, verifies that Candasier did have 7 children.

On the above 1880 census, next hh to Ben & Jane is Benjamin's sister, Lou Ellen (Lavenia) Jackson & husband Seaborn J. Pierson (spelled Pearson on the census record.) This proves to me that this 1880 census is indeed the right Ben for John Lewis Jackson's son.

On this census page Benjamin's dau Temperance Jane Jackson Ammons is living next hh to Benjamin and Candasier. Candasier neither reads or write but Benjamin does.

Janis Owens writes: "Benjamin and brothers fought in CSA in same Alabama regiment - 3 Batt'n Hilliard's Legion, Alabama Volunteers. Ben was corporal. John Kirby Jackson (Ben's brother) was a sergeant and all the brothers distinguished themselves in service (and survived till Appomattox; not a small feat). Candacy is buried at Piney Grove in Geneva County, under tombstone that reads C. J. Jackson, wife of B. D. Jackson. He is assumed to be buried next to her, but his grave isn't marked.

"Uncle Elbert told me such sweet stories about old Ben that I am fond of him. When his wife Canadasier was old and infirm, he built her a wheelchair made of a dining room chair and wagon wheels so she could get around."

Candasier 'Candacy' Jane Troxell-14966

This was copied from a post-em on a rootsweb chart for Benjamin B. Jackson:
"This is my gggrandmother. Her name is Candasier Jane Troxel (sometimes listed as Stronxill or a variation.) She was from Kentucky, married Ben when he was stationed in KY in the Civil War. She was a Cherokee Indian from the KY Troxel family."

An email from the above descendant states that "Candasy Jane Hardwick was daughter of Mary Jane Troxell. Candasy was born in August 1847 and her mother married Samuel Hardwick on August 15, 1851. She is listed on the 1860 Pulaski County, Kentucky census as Candasy dau of Samuel and Mary. Was she listed as a Troxell (Stroxdill) on her marriage certificate? Mary was listed on the 1850 Pulaski Co., KY census living with the family of G. A. Jones. There was no child listed as her daughter.
"According to the story, Ben was fighting with Alabama regiment in Kentucky and met Candasie and before the war was over, they had one baby, she was pregnant with another. They came to Alabama in a wagon. Candasier was illegitimate, and her father's last name was Sloan (according to her death certificate). The Troxells were Jews, originally from Asia Minor (or North Africa) who journeyed around Europe, and ended up in Switzerland before the father and two of his sons came to New World via Pennsylvania. The sons came south and intermarried with Indians in North Carolina. They are a well-researched family. Just beware of the Troxell Myth - the Cornblossom and etc, which I understand is nonsense."

She was listed on the 1920 census for Holley, Coffee, Alabama as C. J. Jackson, widow, living with her widowed daughter-in-law, Emma, and John and Emma's children. Emma is indexed as Elmer!

Janis Owens writes: "Candacy is buried at Piney Grove in Geneva County, under tombstone that reads C. J. Jackson, wife of B. D. Jackson. He is assumed to be buried next to her, but his grave isn't marked."

1964. Andrew Jackson Jackson-10492

The following note was given to me by Cecil Revell 11/15/07. He notes that his source was Linda Garner at Myfamily.com Jackson family page.
Andrew Jackson Jackson, brother of ggrandfather John Kirby Jackson, was born in Montgomery Co., AL, 5 February 1845. He enlisted in the Confederate Army as substitute for John K. Jackson, untill he was old enough to serve for himself.
He then enlisted in his own name July 1862, as a member of Hilliard's Legion.
The forces remained at Montgomery untill the fall of that year when they were ordered to Tennessee, and sent to Knoxville, Cumberland Gap, Clinton, Kingston and Louden. The battalions were then consolidated into regiments and he was attached to the 60th. Alabama under Col. J.W. Sanford, Major Hatch Cook, Oracle's Brigade and Bushrod Johnson's Division. The command was then sent to Chickamauga where they were engaged in a desperate battle. Andrew received a slight wound in this battle. This was the only wound he received throughout the war.
From here his command was sent to Missionary Ridge where it was attached to Longstreet's Core and forwarded on to Knoxville and Drewery's Bluff, Virginia, where they were again engaged in battle. They were then ordered to Richmond and were engaged in several skirmishes there and later moved on to the breast-works at Petersburg where they remained untill it was evacuated. They were then ordered to Appomattox Court House.
Andrew was nine hundred miles from home when given his parole. About half of the distance had to be covered on foot as all of the railway bridges had been burned and trains could not be put through. He arrived home on May 2, and began farming.
He was married to Sarah J. Thomas on November 22, 1866.
He and his family went to Texas in November, 1874, locating at Hills Prairie, Bastrop Co., where they resided for two years, before going to Milam County.
Andrew and Sarah had thirteen children, one who died while young. The other twelve all lived to raise families.
Children: Martha Jane, Mary Alice, Rubie Magnolia, Andrew John William, Temperance Ann, James Franklin, Sarah Louisa, Mariah Ellen, Frederick Andrew, Glasper Clarence, Margaret Isabel, Laura Virginia, Jesse Lewis.

So does the designation of the mother of the first 2 children as SC mean possibly that Nancy is a second wife and not the mother of the first two children??? or is this a census error?
