1870. William Henderson Raines Sr.-19911

'W. H. Rains' is found in the 1880 census living in Gadsden, Crockett, Tennessee, living with his wife and 5 children. Leona Belle is missing from the census and could be deceased. Tennessee is also missing but could be married and out of the home.

(this enumerator left a lot out of the record! I wonder if the 15 yr old Turner was a child from a previous marriage of Turner's?? I question because none of the other records I've seen have this child as belonging to Susan Elizabeth Raines Tate.) YES! Turner, age 15 is the child of Susanna De Moss, Turner Tate's first wife who died in 1867.

3880. John Lewis Raines-19924

1998 Query found on the Kersey list posted by Linda Kaldowski of Fayetteville, AR.
Email addy for Linda: kaldowsk@comp.uark.edu
"Parham Kersey and his group and Parham is somehow related to my Raines and he raised my g. grandfather John Lewis Raines in Falls CO. TX. The 1880 Falls CO. census shows John Raines in Parham Kersey's household and lists him as "son." John was given to Parham by his (John Raines) mother, Sarah Ann Mitchell Raines after her husband (John M. Raines) disappeared sometime between 1876 and 1880 from around Washington CO. TX. She also gave away 5 other children and I certainly don't know why because she soon married a man named Thomas Rayburn at Waco TX. and raised another family. She never went back for her children and they (the children) were separated for about 20 years before they began to find each other."

According to Bob Mitchell: "Elisha Jackson settled in an area of Madison Co., TN that became part of Crockett Co., TN in 1872. He was one of the first settlers of Crockett County. Owned $2000.00 in real estate in 1850, no slaves listed. In 1860, Elisha had $1500.00 in real estate and $5000.00 in personal property. He owned five slaves ranging in age from 4 years to 65 years in 1860. Elisha Jackson was listed on the 1870 Dist 18, Madison Co., TN, US Census with $10,000.00 in real estate holdings and $1000.00 in personal property.

Louisa Jane Williams-10549

According to Bob Mitchell: "Louisa Jane Williams was the daughter of one of the largest and most prominent pioneer families in Crockett County. After her death, Elisha married her sister."

Lee Unknown-18849

Copied from Bob Mitchell's site:
Lee was a bi-racial or mulatto slave woman. This is based upon the research of Samuel Starks, III. The son of this union, Charley, was the beginning of an African American line of Jackson's in Crockett County, Tennessee.

1880. Cullen Washington Jackson-20194

I, Janie, have no documented proof that Cullen is David and Elizabeth's son but am convinced that he is because of his many connections with this family and the fact that he fits in David and Elizabeth's 1830 and 1840 census records. Also, his widow was found in 1880 in Texas surrounded by David's descendants. I have not found him in the 1850 records. He may have been out of the parent's household by then. Though he didn't marry until 1856 he was buying property by 1851. Elisha Jackson, probable brother, was surety for Cullen's marriage.

In the 1920s postmaster in Ben Franklin received a telephone call from a Mr. Richards in Madison County, Tennessee searching for descendants of Cullen. They returned the call to learn that the man's father, on his death bed, had confessed to coming down to Lamar County where he shot Cullen in revenge for murder of Willis Richards."

Jackson Cullen W., b 16 Jan 1825, d 12 Jul 1879, bur Hickory Grove. Married Ellizzie ??. Tombstone is inscribed, 'C. W. Jackson.' From TXGenWeb Project, Lamar County.

From '1870-1880 MORTALITY SCHEDULES OF LAMAR COUNTY, TEXAS,' compiled by Mary Stinson Claunch Lane, Paris, TX: Precinct 2, Page 1, SD 2, ED 74; No. 304; "Jackson, Cullen W.; 51 year old white male, married; born in Tenn.; father born in N.C.; mother born in Tenn.; farmer; died in Jul; cause - Gunshot wound in bowels, supposed suicide; resident of county 48 years."

Therefore, Cullen was brought to Lamar County as a child in 1831. - which does not agree with the above census records at all!

3904. Nancy A. Jackson-20196

Marriage Record for N. A. E. Jackson
Spouse: J. S. Williams
Date: 4 Jan 1883
B/G: Bride
County and State: Lamar Co. TX

There is a Nancy Williams in the 1910 Census for Lamar Co, Texas. She is a 53 year old widow, b in TN, father b in TN, mother b in NC. She says she has had no children. I cannot be positive that this is the same Nancy as married J. S. Williams, but the age and place of births do agree.

3905. John H. Jackson-20197

Barbara Crumpton: "I don't think John ever married. If so, had no issue.

"Jackson John H.: 10 Aug 1869 - 7 Jul 1914, Hickory Grove CENTER SOUTH, Buried near Alonza W. Jackson. Another source has birth year as 1859." Since he was on the 1860 census (see his father's notes) we can know his birth date was 1859.

1881. Viola Jackson-10545

Records have been found that two of Viola's children, Dillie and Rowena, were born in Bells and Viola herself died in Bells, so it would be a good assumption that all of her children perhaps were born in Bells, Madison County before it became Bells, Crockett County in 1871.

I first thought this census indicated that the Benthal children were being raised as Jacksons; but later records do not indicate this. So the listing of David and Martha as Jacksons was in error. By 1870 Catherine had died and the Benthal children were not included in Jesse's household.

Daniel Benthal-19605

David was Catherine's father.

Jesse Jackson-10544

Bob Mitchell writes:
"Jesse Jackson, a farm laborer, is on the 1850 Dist 9, Madison Co., TN US Census, living in the household of Daniel Benthal and family. When Daniel Benthal died, Jesse married Daniel's wife Catherine in 1854 and raised her two Benthal children as his own. Though Catherine's maiden name was Jackson, she apparently was no relation to Jesse and he is not known to be related to the Hempstead line of Jacksons.

"It is thought this Jesse Jackson was a son of a Jesse Jackson who along with about three or four other Jackson men were in Stewart County, Tennessee when David Jackson, SR and his entourage of family came through there and stayed for a short time between 1810 and 1820. These other Jacksons seem to be a different set of Jacksons. Some of them have been researched but others have not."

From Barbara Crumpton:

By 1870 Catherine Jackson had died and Jesse has remarried and has two more children. 'Len' is probably not her name, but that's the best I could make out from the handwriting. See ** below.

Texas Marriage Collection, 1814-1909 and 1966-2002
Name: Jesse Jackson
Marriage Date: 12 Jul 1866
Spouse: Louise Ponder
Marriage County: Lamar
Marriage State: Texas
Source: Texas Marriages, 1814-1909 available at ancestry.com

It appears that Jesse's two step-children David A and Martha Benthal have left the household by 1870 even though they would have been only abt 20 and 21.

Jesse's first wife, Catherine, had died in 1863 leaving him with four small children. He remarried in 1866 and had three more children. But in 1879 both Jesse and his wife Lou died in an epedemic leaving all seven children. Catherine's brother brought suit to take guardianship of his sister's four children but did not take the three youngest children. The story from Trellys Edwin is "that the three younger children, Sam, David and Dan were taken in by the Tidwell family. The 1880 Montague County, Texas census lists Sam age 12, living with Mascel Tidwell as a farm laborer. There are no records to show what happened to the other two young boys. Dan does not show up until the 1910 Rush Springs census married to Ethel with three children, Sterling, Ruby and Buster, and living very close to Sam and Alice. David Andrew is in the 1900,1910,and 1920 Durant, Bryan Co., OK census."

3920. James C. Jackson-10623

No mention of James C. after 1860 Lamar census; not in estate settlement, presumably deceased.

3922. John R. Jackson-10666

John wasn't on the Oct enumeration of 1860 census. I will use about 1861.

Apparently the two families were sharing a household in 1860; J. R. Baker was #117 and the Jackson child on next page was also #117. James W Jackson and Jacob Rushing Baker were brothers-in-law.

The following 1880 census is the only 1880 census I've found for James W. that could be the right one but I can't be sure because of the wife's name and difference between their ages. If this is the right one, these children should be listed on an 1870 census; but I can't find any 1870 census for this couple.

This census is on the same page and within 3 households of John and Ann's son John. Since dau Alice B. is definitely tied to James and Annie by them living with her in the 1900 census; I feel sure this is the right census for James and Annie. Lacking the 1870 census, this also is the only record I've found for Thadius, Charles, Louise, Melvina and Joseph. The inclusion of these children brings the number of children for James and Ann up to 11. On the 1900 census, Ann said she had borne 12 children.

When his sister Catherine and later her husband Jesse Jackson died, James became the guardian of Catherine's children. Jesse had remarried but both Jesse and his second wife died in an epidemic, so James took Catherine's 4 children. But he didn't take the 3 children of Jesse and his second wife.
