1468. Elizabeth Arnold-290
Obit provided by Marsha Petrie:
Obituary of Elizabeth (Arnold) Welch.Died, at her residence in Jackson county, West Virginia, October 17,1878, Mrs. Elizabeth Welch consort of John Welch. The subject of this sketch was born in Harrison county, Virginia, Sept.15, 1801. At the time of her death, and for fifty-eight years previous, she was a member of the M.E. Church, ever ready with encouraging counsel to the young and those who seemed to weary in the Redeemer's cause she had words of encouragement and consolation. For many years previous to her death she was a great sufferer, and for fifteen months she was prostrated by partial paralysis. During all this time of terrible affliction, if there was anyone of the family ill or suffering the slightest scratch or wound, she seemed forgetful of her own affliction to inquire minutely after them. Her soul was the temple of kindness, as hundreds will attest who have been the recipients of her motherly care and nursing during sickness.
She is gone- gone from a world of sorrow, trials and afflictions to that upper and better world of peace and eternal rest. She leaves a husband, now over 80 years old, and nine children. God grant they may all profit by the noble precepts and examples she left them.
An ALT date of death provided by McWhorter Sketches: 8 Mar 1880

Source History of Roane Co., WV.WelchThis name occurs in county boundary lines, Welch's Mill on Elk Fork of Mill Creek being the second object: "To the thirteenth mile stone on the Spencer and Ripley turnpike: thence to Welch's Mill." We have no information concerning the family except that he, John Welch, with his wife, who was Elizabeth Arnold, settled there about the year of 1845, with one son, Isaiah, and two daughters, one of whom married Major Henry Stump, built the water grist mill there, of the then usual type of which there were so many everywhere in western Virginia, a dam across the stream, of logs, skillfully notched together with dovetailed anchors of heavy logs. about five feet high, all laid together in such a way that the weight of head water came on long logs, dovetailed the anchors of the dam pressing its parts more firmly on each other. Here John Welch and his wife raised at least one child to maturity, that being Isaiah Welch, who was a prominent young man of that part of the county about the close of the "Civil War."
Article on Perry Boggs, Contributed by Marsha Petrie:: Eighty Years in Iowa. Perry Boggs, one of Albia's oldest residents, was born in Braxton, W VA in 1830 and came to Iowa at the age of 9 years. He attended school both at Farmington and Fairfield.
Mr. Boggs has lived in Iowa 80 years, spending all of that time in Albia, except 12 years at Creston. He was married in 1851 to Jamima Welch. Mr. and Mrs. Boggs were the parents of nine children, seven of whom are now living.
Mr. Boggs has been visiting his niece, Mrs. J. L. Todd, of Indiannola Avenue. He saw the state capitol for the first time during this visit. He is still active and spends his time reading and attending to many light duties.

ANDREW JACKSON NORMAN, p. 208
Andrew Jackson Norman was born 1827 in Virginia, son of John and Nancy (Montgomery) Norman. When Andrew was a small child, he contracted typhoid fever and frozen sod was pressed to both sides of his head to control the high fever. He survived the fever, but was deaf the rest of his life. He was said to carry a small slate for people to write on when he couldn't understand them. He also taught children with the slate. Many years ago, Escue Norman (a son of Andrew Harrison) met an elderly lady in Weston, WV who told how Andrew J. Norman had made her first shoes. They had no nails.
Andrew Norman married Amanda (Monoka) Arnold, daughter of Isaac and Mary Arnold, on July 18, 1852 in Gilmer County. Andrew and Amanda bought a 21 acre farm on the left fork of White Oak Camp Run near Normantown, WV (where Harold Gaston now lives). On March 9, 1861, they sold 185 acres on Bear Fork to Melville Stump.
In September 1862, Andrew was robbed by 3 men masquerading as Confederate soldiers. On May 14, 1865, Monoka died at the age of 31 years, 4 months and 16 days.

Below is a portion of an article transcribed by Norma Knotts Shaffer from microfilms of the Calhoun Chronicle dated 6/12/1898. The author of this article in not given, but it was probably written by the newspaper's editor at the time, S.C. Barr. This transcription found at the Hur Herald site.
"We called to see Aunt Jane Ferrel, widow of Hiram Ferrel. Her first husband, Thomas J. Rice, with his young wife, added their names to the list of early settlers in 1838, and made their home where Granville Rice now lives, near Mussel Shoals.
Aunt Jane is a lady of remarkable energy, strength and agility for one of her years, and her memory seems to be accurate. She can detail many interesting incidents of early life, some of which we will give our readers in a succeeding number of the Chronicle.
Aunt Jane wove, on the old hand loom, three hundred yards of carpet and blankets last winter before Christmas. She says: 'In 1838 we had to ask hands all the way from DeKalb, in Gilmer county, to the Sixteen bend to get enough help for a log rolling.'"Calhoun, VA MarriagesGroom: FERREL, HIRAMAge: 48marital Status: WidowedBirthplace: MONONGALIA/VAParents: FERREL, ROBERT & RACHAELBride: RICE, JANEAge: 38marital Status: WidowedBirthplace: BATH/VAParents: SMITH, HENRY & LYDIAMarriage date: 14 NOV 18581860 Calhoun, VAFERRIL, 695Hiram Ferril...50...Monongalia...FarmerJane...40...Bath Co., VARachel...15...GilmerHiram...13...GilmerRobert...11...GilmerMatilda Q...8...GilmerBattell B...11/12...CalhounGranville ROICE...20...Lewis...House JoinerThomas J. 1 female 15-20 (Jacintha b 1826)
his wife (Mary Bennett of Harrison Co.)The 1850 and 1860 Census records for this family needs interpreting. In 1850 Stephen has 6 children from 1 year to 14 years old; is said to have married Mary ______ within the past year. Mary was 31 yrs old and born in Maine. Warren County marriage records say that Stephen married Mary Bennett in Sept. 1849. Stephen's first wife was also named Mary Bennett according to Harrison County, (W)VA records. Stephen called his second wife 'Polly'.
1850 Census Warren Co, OH:

This turns out to be Susanna Scudder Flesher, widow of Elias Flesher, who married Stephen in March of 1855. This census has now been proved to be in error; three boys named Flesher were actually Jackson children. See administrator's bond below. Also, later census records names the boys Jackson.

"Alexander McClain Simonton, second son of David L. and Mary G., was born near the little village of Middleboro, Warren county, Ohio, Nov. 15, 1842. When about four years old his parents moved on a farm previously purchased, where he was reared to manhood. A little brick meeting house was near and it was there that the family attended Sunday school and church. After completing the work in the public school, he entered the Normal at Lebanon, Ohio to prepare for teaching. He was about seventeen years of age then. He began teaching in 1862, and taught about six years, working of farm during vacations.
During the early 60's he formed an acquaintance with Miss Cyrena S. Jackson, near Level Station, Ohio, who was born July 13, 1841, which culminated in the marriage relation May 18, 1865. The ceremony was pronounced by Rev. L. Clark, of the M. E. church. She began a Christian life at the early age of thirteen.
Having entered the Gospel ministry, he and his wife went to Hillsdale, Mich., and he entered college to prepare more thoroughly for his work, in autumn of 1865. After leaving college he made the ministry the chief work of his life. His first charge was in Michigan. While there Mrs. Simonton was seized with lung trouble, in Feb. 1872. They returned to their home in Ohio, where she patiently endured until the Master said, "It is enough," and calmly and hopefully passed from us on Dec. 15, 1872.
He continued his church work with the home churches, during which time he became acquainted with Miss Margaret West, daughter of Col. Owen and Elizabeth West. She was born near Martinsville, Ohio, June 18, 1856. The association grew stronger until both parties agreed to change their relationship. And on April 25, 1877, Rev. Ira. H. Dudley pronounced the marriage rites. In young womanhood Miss West confessed Christ in a meeting held at Blanchester. This union was crowned with three daughters.
Rev. A. M. Simonton has been in the ministry 52 years at this date, 1916. Forty-seven years in pastoral work, one in extension work. He solemnized over one hundred marriages; officiated at over two hundred funerals; exact number of baptisms not known, but about two hundred. His labors were in Mich., Ohio, Ill., Ind., and N.Y. states. His pastorates were from two to eleven years. Usually successful in the fields he labored. He is obliged to rest at this date 1916."

2808. Oliver S. Jackson-2277
Oliver was found in both the 1850 & 1860 Salem Township, Warren Co., Ohio Census living at home.
Oliver died in the Civil War. He served in the 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Info found in the book "Lest We Forget" Vol. I, pg 72; compiled by Mary M. Everhart for the WCGS, copyright 2002. The book is in the WCGS Records Room, Warren Co, OH.
Oliver is buried in Wesley Chapel Cem, Warren County, OH, but may not have died in Warren Co as he died during the Civil War.
2809. David S. Jackson-2341
David was found in the 1850 Salem Township, Warren Co., OH Census, 3 yrs old. I did not find him in the same 1860 Census.
David was not named as an heir of Stephen Jackson who died in 1865. It is assumed he had died prior to that time.
Mary 'Polly' Gould Bennett (widow)-2375
There is a possibility that Mary Polly had been previously married. I have not seen record of that, but Matella P. Doughman says that Stephen married Mrs. Mary B. Bennett.
In a later supplement Mrs. Doughman gives more info on this Mary: "She was a granddaughter of Jesse Gould and married first to Benedict Bennett. Their chilren were Smith, who died young and Elizabeth who married Emery Long. Had five children: Anna, Elva, Izola and Harry - one died in infancy. After death of Benedict B. she married Stephen Jackson for his second wife. Elva is now Mrs. Tucker of Ironton, Ohio."
The problem I find with the above is the 1880 census record of Emery Long and his wife Mary E. This children are listed as Anna Alva, Izola and Harry; so this is the right couple. But Mary E. is listed as 24 years old with calculated birth date of about 1856. And her mother, Mary Polly /MNU/ Bennett, married Stephen Jackson in 1849. The only way I can see that this paragraph above could be right is that if Elizabeth had died and Mary E. was a second wife to Emery. But the 1870 census proves this wrong. Looks like this Mary E. is NOT Elizabeth, dau of Mary Polly Bennett and Mary E. is the mother of Anna. Needs more work to prove second paragraph above.
2811. Mary E. Jackson-2167
Mary was not named as an heir of Stephen Jackson who died in 1865. It is assumed she had died prior to that time.
According to the 1850 and 1860 Warren Co Census, Susanna was born in Ohio. Her first marriage was to Elias Flesher in 1837. In the 1850 Census, she was found as the wife of Elias Flesher, with 6 of their children and his Mother, Lucinda Jackson Flesher. In this 1850 Census, their name was spelled Fletcher. In the 1860 Census, the childrens' names were spelled Flesher. By the time of the 1860 census, Elias had died and Susanna was married again to Stephen Jackson, a cousin of Elias. So she and Elias' children are listed with her second husband, Stephen Jackson. Their 1860 census record is listed in Stephen's Notes.
A puzzlement to this webmaster - Benjamin, Albert and Andrew are old enough to show on a census first in 1860. They are listed as Flesher children, and it was assumed were living with their mother, Susanna Scudder Flesher Jackson and their new step-father Stephen Jackson. But after Elias the father died, his oldest 4 children were placed under guardianship as they were minors. Why were not the younger 3 children also placed under guardianship?? And the birthdate of Andrew presents a problem. Could the younger three children have been nephews Susanna was raising; and perhaps someone else was their guardian?? I noted that these 3 younger children were not with Susan on the 1870 census below. I noticed also that when the older Flesher children received an inheritance from their grandfather Alfred Scudder, these 3 boys were not included in that inheritance. I had begun to doubt if they were Susanna's children, and this issue needed more research.
Paula Mellor provided the info below; and this proved that these 3 boys were Stephen Jackson's children and were not named Flesher. This also resolves the problem with Andrews birthdate.

They lived there and in Warren County until October, 1848, when they moved on a packet boat by way of the Miami and Wabach canals to Paulding County and settled in Crane township on a farm and there resided until August, 1895, then moved to Antwerp, where they now reside."
