Notes

1397. Sarah Fairchild-21393

The timeline below is a shortened version of material prepared by Steve Burkett in 1990:
Info from Abiud's pension app:
1778 lived in Wilkes Co., N.C. when he first entered service in Rev. War
1780 discharged in Wilkes Co., N.C.
1781 again served and was discharged, served in company in which William Jackson was Captain
1781 lived in Wilkes Co., N.C. after war until he went to Floyd Co., KY in 1808
This statement conflicts with the fact of Abuid's being enumerated on the 1800 census in ASHE Co. He had not moved and probably still considered that he still lived in Wilkes. But the area he lived in was cut out of Wilkes and named Ashe County in 1799; therefore, his appearance on the 1800 Ashe County census.

1800 Census Morgan Dist, Ashe Co., NC.
Fairchild, Biud 00010 33010 Morgan pg 78 this indicates 3 dau under 10 and 3 dau bet 10 thru 15.
The family has probably not moved. Ashe County was cut from Wilkes Co in 1799. Later, the area became Watauga Co.!

Gary Collins has a rootsweb chart which gives a birthdate for Sarah as 6 Jan 1784 in Wilkes Co., NC. No source is given. But that date is consistant with her age in the 1850 Census.

John Colvin-23612

Email rec'd "The oldest John I have came from Wilkes Cty Carolina to Eastern ky with 20 other families. He married Sarah Fairchild, who was once married to James Curtis. That pretty much is as far back as any record of him goes, to my knowledge. Wade"

1850 Census Cumberland, Cumberland, Kentucky
James Sewell 65 M farmer NC
Pheby Sewell 63 F NC
Nancy Sewell 30 F KY
John Bond 16 M KY
Wm. M. Sewell 17 M KY

Many charts show this John Bond as John Bond Sewell but I don't see evidence of that on the census image. I have not found either a John Bond or a John Bond Sewell on the 1860 census or his supposed wife Helen. So I have not input John as a son of James and Phebe. If anyone knows of another type documents indicating John is their son, please email the webmaster.

1404. Rebecca Jackson-10042

AUGUST 2008: AN UNSUBSTANTIATED STORY ON ANCESTRY.COM says that Rebecca is the daughter of Stephen Jackson, son of William. This is very likely true but I, Janie, am still awaiting verification of this!!

SEPTEMBER 2008: For some time I've had cautionary remarks in the notes of Rebecca Jackson Lowe, conjectured dau of William Jackson, s/o Gen Joseph Jackson. New information has arrived that Rebecca is more likely the daughter of William's son Stephen and though this sounds more logical to me, it is not verified yet. Rather than remove all of Rebecca and Jacob Low's descendants from online, I am moving her to be Stephen's daughter, again with these cautionary notes, hoping that verification can be made soon.

From Darrell Jackson's Notes:
"I will record Rebecca as a daughter of William and Barsheba Jackson and a sister of David based on:
1) Her area of residence and association with the Low family. She and her brother David married Low siblings.
2) Her marriage was officiated by a man named 'Keys' as was her brother David Jackson's marriage.
3) She named a daughter Eura, (probably phonetic) for her mother-in-law Ury's name and a son William after her father.
The eight children of Jacob Low and his wife Rebecca Jackson are from a genealogy published by Cindy Pegg on a website . . . The info on David Kitsmiller Lowe was rec'd from Joetta Canter of Carter Co."

Janie says: The website by Cindy Pegg mentioned by Darrell is no longer available.

The researcher should take the info with caution as the relationship between Rebecca and her conjectured father, William, needs more conclusive evidence. Rebecca is just a mite young IF census ages below can be believed. But William had 4 sons, John, Joseph, Stephen and David - proved by his will (which doesn't mention any of his daughters!) It is possible that Rebecca is a daughter of any of the first three sons mentioned. There weren't any other Jackson families in that area at that time that we know of; so she probably does connect there somewhere. Any additional info on Rebecca and Jacob Low will be appreciated! (The Bible record mentioned on ancestry.com in Aug/Sept 2008 is the first indication I've seen that verifies that Rebecca is indeed a dau of Stephen. Recognizing that there are still some questions about the Bible records to be resolved, I will move Rebecca to be Stephen's daughter.)

I did not find the 1850 or 1860 Census for Jacob and Rebecca, but I did find them on the 1870. I assumed this was the same family based on the child Kitsmiller being included. The following 1850 & 1860 census copied from Janet Ariciu's rootsweb chart:

The following 1880 Census is not only mis-read and indexed (Lone vs Lowe) but they have Rebecca as mother-in-law instead of mother. If she had been a m-i-l her last name would have been different. Again, I am concerned about Rebecca being too young to be William Jackson's daughter, but the recent finding of Bible records that say Rebecca is daughter of Stephen makes more sense. Rebecca could read but not write. It is possible that this 1880 census is not our Rebecca and her son David Kitzmiller Lowe. David's age is not quite right, but he is on record as having married a Mary Catherine and the location is right.

Jacob Low Jr.-10098

An ALT birth date is given by Darrell Jackson: Abt 23 Mar 1806.

2582. Eura Low-10106

Probably named after her grandmother Ury Slemp.

1412. William R. Jackson-10085

From Darrell Jackson: "It is known that David (William's father) was in Campbell County by 1830 based on the census records. David is not listed as owning land in Carter County, but on 24 April 1824 he along with 3 other citizens of Carter County proved (witnessed?) a land sale in Carter County. Since this is 3 years after William R. Jackson was born . . . this is the best evidence of William's birthplace."

From a web page written by Darrell: http://www.tngenweb.org/morgan/HORACEJACKSON.html
"WILLIAM R. JACKSON spent his life as a Baptist Preacher in Morgan County. Not a remarkable life until you learn among other things that he represented Morgan County at the Greenville Convention in 1861. His brother-in-Law JOSEPH ALEXANDER COOPER who was to become a Major General represented Campbell County. A total of 30 East Tennessee Counties participated in this convention in an attempt to prevent secession from the Union. The document that these Pro-union delegates drew up, signed and delivered to the Govenor was called a "Declaration of Grievances Adopted at the Greenville Convention."

"In a 1908 speech given by William Riley Cooper he states: "He [William Jackson] was a Baptist preacher; a shoe-maker and a blacksmith and a very useful man in his calling and trades; a man of benevolent spirit and fine personal appearance."

"On 24 October 1857 he recorded the sale of land to David Sharp. The land was located on Cove Creek in Campbell Co., TN. This was land that his wife Mahala Cooper inherited from her father. This deed is recorded in the Campbell Co., TN deed book O (as in Ohio) on page 184."

"His younger brother George, 14 years old, is living with him during the 1860 Morgan County Census dated 14 Jun 1860. They were living in Crooked Fork, TN."

"William is found in the 1870 Census of Crooked Fork, Morgan Co., TN. Only the last nine of his children and his wife are living in the household."

Mahala Cooper-10086

Darrell Jackson posted this on the Campbell Co., TN msg boards Sep 2000:
"Mahala Cooper married William R. Jackson on 4-30-1840 in Caryville, Campbell Co, TN. In about 1852 they migrated to Morgan Co, TN where they raised 16 children. Mahala inherited the land described below from her father John Cooper (abt 1780-1854). He and his wife Hester Sage and other family members are buried in the Cooper's View Cemetery. This cemetery is in a rapidly developing area near Cove Lake/Creek. I visited there in July 2000. Its not much more then a mile from the Indian Creek Baptist church and is hard to find. I worry about its survival. The wittness on this deed is Mahala's younger brother, Joseph Alexander Cooper, the Campbell County farmer that became a Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War." Then follows a long deed.

2605. Elisha Evan Jackson-10119

From Darrell Jackson: "Elish was 9 years old in the 1860 census, giving him a birth year of about 1851. On the 21 Sep 1863 pension application of his mother his birth date is given as 4 Apr 1853. By taking 2 years from his age it kept him under the 16 year old age limit 2 years longer and qualified his mother for the $2.00 a month pension that much longer. On a document dated 5 Mar 1869 it states that he married on 9 Jun 1868. This would have been 2 months after he turned 15 years old according to what was by then official government documents."

"I [Darrell] assume that the facts established by the documents in the pension file, since they are now official government records, will remain in effect. Since no birth certificates were required prior to the civil war there is nothing else to base birth dates on. May there exists, in somebody's attic, a bible belonging to James V. Jackson. But until the birth dates listed in Mahala's pension record stands as the official record."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Janie, webmaster: But I have used the estimated age according to the 1860 census records. I have to agree with Darrell that Mahala probably did take 2 years off the younger children's ages for pension application purposes and I have used what I think are the more accurate, if not official, birth dates. I also assumed the birth day and month on the pension application was accurate.

1414. Eura Jackson-10090

The Daughters of David Jackson and his two wives
by Darrell H. Jackson

"This mystery is common to all researchers of female ancestors. Through the early part of this century it seems that once they left daddy's home, women disappeared into the void of records maintained in their husbands name.

"I could write a book about what I don't know about these women. All four were born and lived in Campbell County, Tennessee. I have not been able to find their descendents or other researchers. Because of this I feel that I have a psychic connection to them. Feeling them, almost hearing them. Demanding that we dig them up, get them out into the light and exposure of todays interest in genealogy. They want their story told.

"My hope is that someone out there will recognize one of these women as their Great Grandmother, Aunt or something and will share their story with the rest of this family."

What I (Darrell) have learned about these four daughters of David Jackson is detailed on my website: http://www.tngenweb.org/campbell/family/djack.html. Do see the website for much more detail.

Janie: Since writing the above, Darrell has done much more research on Eura and has quite a lot of info in his research notes. I will quote only one paragragh from his notes:
"In the 1850 Campbell Co, TN census Eura is listed in her father, David Jackson's household, She is listed as Eury Hutson and her son Daniel from her first marriage to James Queener is listed as Daniel Hutson. Does this mean that Isaac Hutson adopted Daniel Queener and that is why he is listed as Daniel Hutson in this census? Probably not, just the fact that the census taker assuming that if the mother is a Hutson, then so is the son. The Daniel Hutson of this census lives the rest of his life, correctly, as Daniel Queener."

James Queener-1044

Darrell Jackson, info rec'd from Paul W. Lemasters: "James Queener was definitely deceased by 1849 because he is listed as such in his father's original will dated December 1849, and James' share of the estate went to his son Daniel.

1415. Jacob Isaac 'Ike' Jackson-10091

Notes by Darrell Jackson: "Jacob, his wife's and his children's names and birth dates are from the Missouri Jackson's Family History that is available from the Family History Center of the Mormon Church.

"Book A of the Campbell Co, TN Marriage Book indicates that a license was issued on 15 May 1849. The Marriage Certificates was not returned.

"In the 1850 Campbell Co, TN census, he has his first child living in the household. He ownes no real estate and his occupation is Farmer.

"Migrated to Missouri in a covered wagon in 1854. Settled in Gentry County first, then to Ray County, Missouri."

Janie notes that the record from the above source all say that the locations were in Polo, Ray County; but Polo is in Caldwell County. I checked MapQuest map of the area and note that Polo is close to the county line of the two counties. These folks may have lived in Ray County in a rural area and the nearest shopping village was in Polo, Caldwell County. I have not checked land records to know in which county they actually lived and recorded documents.

2619. Nancy Alice Jackson-11436

Janie: I am unsure in which Missouri county Jacob's children were born in. Certain records say it was in Polo, Ray County; but Polo is not in Ray County. See the father, Jacob Isaac's Notes.

2624. James Norton Jackson-11441

Janie: I am unsure in which Missouri county Jacob's children were born in. Certain records say it was in Polo, Ray County; but Polo is in Caldwell County. See the father, Jacob Isaac's Notes.

2626. Dora Lillian 'Pet' Jackson-11443

DORA LILLIAN PET JACKSON EMERY - 10/11/1873 to 3/29/1959 Mrs. Dora Lillian Pet Emery was found dead by her bed early Monday morning. She was 85 years old and had lived alone the past 11 years since the death of her husband, John Emery. She was found by R. W. Hufft and Mrs. Lucille Jones while Mr. Hufft was delivering oil and Mrs. Jones was calling. The coroner's inquest determined the time of death as late Sunday and from natural causes. She had not been very well for sometime, but able to care for herself. Mrs. Jackson was the youngest of 16 children of Jacob and Martha Jackson, all of whom have preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:00p at the Polo Methodist Church with Rev. M. O. Eisenhower officiating assisted by Reverend Don Stanley. Burial was made in the Cowgill Cemetery in charge of Alspaugh-Cowley mortuary. Casket bearers were nephews: Glenn Teegarden, Carl Jackson, John Thomas Hyder, Roger Jackson, Hugh D. Teegarden, and Donald Jackson.

John William Emery-11444

Manuscript on the family of Jacob Isaac Jackson and Martha Jane Ford:

His family moved to Missouri in 1879, settling in Caldwell Co. He was the second child of eleven children, and was united with the Methodists Church at an early age. There were no children from his marriage to Dora Lillian.

JOHN WILLIAM EMERY - 5/21/1872 - 1/15/1948 John W. Emery, lifetime resident of this community, died in his home Thursday morning, after about a 2 week illness. He was born May 21, 1870 in Greene County, Indiana. He was the 2nd child of 11 children, 4 of whom survive. The family moved to Missouri in 1879, settling in Caldwell County, where he spent his entire life. He was widely known in this community where for many years he was engaged in farming. On December 12, 1912, he was united in marriage with Miss Dora Lillian Jackson, daughter of the late Jacob and Martha Jane Jackson, early pioneers of Missouri and Caldwell county. Besides his wife he is survived by 2 brothers, Ben Emery of Kingston; Homer E. Emery of Ogallala, Nebraska and 2 sisters, Mrs. Flora Lester of Hamilton and Mrs. Jennie Palmer of Anaheim, California. Also several nieces and nephews. He united with the Methodist church at an early age. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church with the pastor, Reverend W. O. G. Potter officiating. Burial was in the Cowgill Cemetery. The WSCS of the Methodist church served a lunch of sandwiches, pickles, cake and coffee to about 45 relatives and friends from out-of-town who were here Sunday to attend the funeral rites for John Emery. Those from out-of-town here Sunday to attend the John Emery funeral were: Mr. And Mrs. Grafton Jackson and son, of Hamilton; Mr. And Mrs. Homer Emery of Nebraska; Mr. And Mrs. Carl Fonch of Carrollton; Mr. And Mrs. Otto Crowley of Excelsior Springs; Mr. And Mrs. Ruby Jackson; Pearley Jackson and son Jim; Mr. And Mrs. Charles Brownlee; Mrs. N. J. Flint; Mrs. Mary Jackson; Mrs. Minnie Crawford; Mr. And Mrs. Carl Jackson; Mrs. Cecil Couch, all of Kansas City; Mrs. Elva Petree, Dave Jackson, John Jackson and daughter Mary Lee of Richmond; Mrs. Nell Revis; Mrs. Daisy Jackson and son Earl; and Mr. And Mrs. Forrest Shadduck of Cameron.

1416. Lindsay L. Jackson-10092

From Darrell Jackson: "Lindsay does not appear in the 1850 Campbell or Morgan County census. In 1860, 1870 & 1880 he was living in Crooked Fork, (2d Civil District) in Morgan County, Tennessee. In 1900 he was living in the 4th Civil District. After that he lived about 10 miles west of Coalfield near Liberty Church in Morgan County.

"Five sons are listed in the 1860 Census for Morgan County. He also had his brother Abraham living with him, shown as 18 years old and working as a farm laborer. In the 1870 Crooked Fork, Morgan Co., TN Census . . . his oldest son is not listed in the household but the next eight children are. . . In the 1880 Census for the 2nd district, Morgan Co., TN his last 5 children are living in his household."

Janie: I could not find any of this family in Morgan County in the 1880 census. In the 1870 Morgan 2nd District, his name is spelled Lindsley and he is 46 years old.

From Darrell Jackson: "In the 1860 Campbell Co, TN census she is 22 and called Louisa and is married to Benjamin F. Mowell. (the last name was spelled Mowl in that census.) Undoubtedly, the F. is for Franklin. That is the name he uses in the 1860 census.

"Benjamin was a 'Galvanized Yankee". That is a confederate that deserted, or was captured and allowed to join the union army. He had joined Co E, 1st Battalion (Colms) Tennessee Infantry, CSA on 18 Mar 1863 at Knox Co, TN. He deserted 29 Jun 1863. The widow, Elizabeth Jackson's Civil War pension application verified that he had become a soldier for the union side. He was buried at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. He was a PVT and is buried in Section D, Grave #12626."

This appears to be when he enlisted on the Union Side as Darrell's research said he deserted the Confederate side in June 1863. The only other item of note is that his mustering out date is the same date of Benjamin's date of death. Finding the actual widow's pension record would solidify this information is correct.

There is an index card downloaded from Footnote:
Name of Soldier: Mowell, Benjamin F.
Service: Late Rank: Co. E 25, Reg't Ill Inf
Widow's application #180925 - Certificate #145905 filed 26 Oct 1869
Minor application#226477 - Certificate #177912 (On this card there is no date of filing on this line.)
No other additional services or remarks are given.

On the same type (similar but not exact) of card found at ancestry.com here: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=4654&iid=T288_340-2893&fn=&ln=Benjamin+F.+Mowell&st=r&ssrc=&pid=164514
This card is different in that it gives the name of the widow as Mowell, Eliza and
a name of the Minor: Allen, William (G?la)
and there is a date of filing for the Minor application is given as June, 1876, the day being illegible.
The info in ( ) above is listed by ancestry as (Gdn.)

1419. Barsheba Jackson-10095

The Daughters of David Jackson and his two wives
by Darrell H. Jackson

This mystery is common to all researchers of female ancestors. Through the early part of this century it seems that once they left daddy's home, women disappeared into the void of records maintained in their husbands name.

I could write a book about what I don't know about these women.

My hope is that someone out there will recognize one of these women as their Great Grandmother, Aunt or something and will share their story with the rest of this family.

What I (Darrell) have learned about these four daughters of David Jackson is detailed on my website: http://www.tngenweb.org/campbell/family/djack.html. Do see the website for much more detail.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Darrell: "Her given name was Barsheba. I have found her in census records from 1850 to 1910 with the names Barsheba, Bashley, Basha and Bashie. At first as Jackson, then her married name of Smithson and then Jackson again. Notice in the 1880 Census below her husband is not to be found.

* Darrell's comment: "Notice the 11 year gap between the first 2 children. I believe that Elizabeth's correct age should have been 10. This would be closer to what is now known about her."

From Darrell: "She took her maiden name of Jackson back after her husband died*. Apparently so did at least one of her children, i.e. Thomas Daniel Jackson. He served as constable in the 4th district of Tennessee (Campbell Co). He states in his letter to W. R. Jackson (his cousin) in Missouri that his Grandfather (David Jackson born 1780?) had 10 or 16 children (the handwritten number could be read either way). Current evidence would indicate that 10 children would be the correct number of children. Thomas D. Jackson would have been about 60 years old when he wrote this letter."

*Basha Jackson sold property in Campbell County as of 27 Jan 1896 under her name as Basha Jackson; so she had taken her maiden name back by then.

Mr. Smithson-11463

From Darrell Jackson's notes: "I can find nothing in the Campbell Co., Tennessee census records on the name Smithson."
