"An artcle in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 24 April 1885 reports the sad story of Stephen C. Jackson who was the victim of a "deliberate scheme and conspiracy" by Benjamin Andrews and family including mother, brothers, sister and others to defraud him over a period of 15 years of his share of the Jackson Hollow property. He had a one eleventh share (more than 70 lots) in the 200-300 acre property. He was turned out of his house and made homeless. After 15 years of litigation, the Supreme Court of New York State restored the property to Stephen's heirs. After two or three years of living in misery, Stephen was taken in by a kind stranger named L. B. Wing. The litigation began in 1870 and was settled in a court decision in 1885.

Email from Jodie Lutter October, 2007:
"When Sarah Duryea-Jackson's sister, Fannie Duryea-Brewer, died in 1901, the proceedings from the administration of the estate in Rockland County, NY listed Sarah's children:
Franklin Jackson, George Jackson, Margaret Jackson, and Fannie Jackson residing at 522 Kosciusko Street in Brooklyn, New York; Emma Jackson and Alice Roseman residing at Bay Parkway and Bath Avenue in Bensonhurst, Kings County, New York; and Ida Sanford-Soper residing at 76 Schaffer Street in Brooklyn."

Jodi sent me (Janie) a copy of the distribution list of heirs with the amounts of their share. Alice (Jackson) Roseman shares equally with the other children and this is more confirmation of her being his daughter. Alice is found already married in the 1880 census and does show up as Emma's sister in the 1900 census.

2125. Ida E. Jackson-14898
George, Margaret, Franklin, Fanney, Ida & Emma were all still single and living at home in the 1880 Hempstead, Queens Census.
1900 census: 76 Schaefer Street, Brooklyn, 28th Ward, Kings County, New York
Sanford Soper, head; born June 1855, age 40; married 13 years; NY, NY, NY; carpenter; owns a mortgaged house.
Ida Soper, wife; born October 1861, age 38; married 13 years; no children; NY, NY, NY.Ida was living in 1902 when her mother's sister, Fannie Duryea Brewer's estate was settled and she rec'd her portion of her mother's share.
2126. Emma Jackson-14899
George, Margaret, Franklin, Fanney, Ida & Emma were all still single and living at home in the 1880 Hempstead, Queens Census. Emma appears sensitive about her age: in 1870 she is 2, in 1880 she is 16, twenty years later in 1900 she is only 27, and in 1920 she is 50. So the birthdate on the 1900 census cannot be relied upon.
Emma was living in 1902 when her mother's sister, Fannie Duryea Brewer's estate was settled and she rec'd her portion of her mother's share.
2127. Fannie B. Jackson-14900
George, Margaret, Franklin, Fanney, Ida & Emma were all still single and living at home in the 1880 Hempstead, Queens Census.
The following census records received from Jodie Lutter, Oct 2007:
1900 census: 990 Hancock Street, Brooklyn, 28th Ward, Kings County, New York:
Franklin Jackson, head; born July 1864, age 35; single; NY, NY, NY; decorator; rents a house.
Fannie Jackson, sister; born December 1868, age 31; single; NY, NY, NY.
Maggie Jackson, sister; born August 1859, age 40; single; NY, NY, NY.See also mention of Fannie in the record of her sister Alice's husband, Cornelius Price Rosemon. She was apparently still single abt 1906 when Cornelius painted this picture of her farm at Inwood, Long Island: http://www.northeastauctions.com/search/detail.php?l=257&a=feb07
This looks to be the family farm and her father was last recorded in 1880 living in Hempstead, Queens Co, Greater New York City.
But in 1902 when Franklin, Fannie and Maggie rec'd their share of their Aunt Fannie Duryea Brewer's estate, they were living together at 522 Kossiusko St, Brooklyn, New York City.

Chancery Court record:BMJ-55
death certificate
Section 175 #23832"In a biography of his son, Frederick Way Jackson, in The Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens Counties of Nassau and Suffolk by Henry Isham Hazelton (V.7. 249-250), Edward Jackson is identified as Frederick's father and Mary Louise Anthony as his mother. It reports that Edward was born in Jerusalem, NY in 1817. It also reports that his mother died in 1886. The report claims that Edward 'was prominent in the community and a leading figure in many interests and endeavors, being active in the hotel business until his death in 1864.'
"The death certificate for Frederick Way Jackson, information for which must have been supplied by Frank Fletcher Jackson, his son, lists Frederick's father as John H. Jackson. Although this is certainly not correct, it may have meaning.
"A certificate issued by New York State over the signature of James M. Onderdonk declares that Edward Jackson of Hempstead in North Hempstead, NY on 4 July 1837 'of his own free will and choice, enrolled himself into a Troop of Horse Artillery under my command, comprising part of the second Regiment of the First Brigade of New York State Horse Artillery.'
"Edward is listed as a child under 21 years of age of John Jackson in a Chancery Court petition of 18 March 1838.
"In a deed dated 17 May 1839 (Queens Co, Liber YY : 249) John Jackson and his wife Margaret, sold to Stephen C. Jackson of Brooklyn, Isaac Jackson of Hempstead, Jacob S. Jackson of Brooklyn, Coe D. Jackson, Parmenus Jackson, Richard Jackson and Edward Jackson all of Brooklyn for eight thousand dollars two parcels of land near Jerusalem, Hempstead.
"Parmenus Jackson and Edward Jackson sell land in Jersualem, NY on 21 June 1839 (Queens, Liber YY:458-459) to Stephen C. Jackson. They sell 'an equal undivided eighth part' of a 100 acre parcel and a 200 acre parcel with appurtenances for $2000. (see fuller note for Stephen C. Jackson.)
"Edward Jackson is listed as a merchant in the 1843-44 Brooklyn City Directory with his house at 40 Douglas. In 1854 he is listed as living on Gates Ave between Grand and Classon Avenues. In 1855-56 Edward Jackson is listed with Alexander Anthony as a 'butcher' at Classon Ave and the corner of Quincy St. with his house the same. He is listed alone in 1856-57 as on the corner of Classon Ave and Quincy. In 1857-58 he is listed as a butcher at Fulton Ave near Washington Ave with his house on Quincy near Classon Ave.
"On 16 Sept 1848 John Jackson deeded property (Kings Co, Liber 184: 310) to, among others, Edward Jackson & Jacob S. Jackson.
"Edward is listed in the 1850 US Census (M432,roll 519:319) as age 33 with wife, Mary age 27, son Jacob age 4, and daughter, Elizabeth, age 2. The entry reports that his real estate is worth $25,000 and that he has no occupation. An Ellen Daly, born in Ireland, and age 19 is in the household.
"On 23 Feb 1850 the heirs of John Jackson deeded property (Kings Co, Liber 211: 311) to Edward Jackson.
"On 3 Dec 1852 Edward Jackson deeded property (Kings Co., 302: 470) to Timothy P. Burger, assignee.
"The 1855 New York State census shows Edward living in the 7th ward of Brooklyn on the 23rd of June of 1855. He is listed as age 27 (probably 37 ?), having been born on Long Island and occupation 'butcher'. His family is identified as Mary L. Jackson, wife, age 32, having been born in NYC, Jacob S. Jackson son age 0, born in Brooklyn; Kate B. Jackson, (illegible) age 6, Frederick W. Jackson, son, age 4, born in Brooklyn; George R. Jackson, son, age 2 born in Brooklyn, Emily Dearborn (?), sister, age ? born in NYC, Catherine Brant, servant, age ?, born in Germany.
"The Brooklyn City Directory for 1858 lists Edward Jackson, butcher, at Fulton Ave near Washington Ave with his house at Quincy near Classon.
"On 25 May 1859 Edward Jackson deeds land (Kings Co, Liber501:488) in a debtor judgment to Herbert T. Moore.
"In the 1859-60 Brooklyn City Directory an Edward Jackson is listed as butcher at Bedford Rd. near Grand Ave.
"The 1860 US Census (T7-11170, p.170) entry for Edward Jackson lists him as 'laborer'and age 40. Also, his wife is Mary Jackson, age 36, and his children : Jacob, age 14, Elizabeth, age 12, Frederick, age 9, George, age 7, Edward, age 3 and Matilda, age 1. They live in the 7th ward of Brooklyn.
"On 19 May 1863 Edward Jackson and Parmenus Jackson deeded land ( Kings Co, Liber 600:191) in a debtor judgment to David E. Wheeler.
"In the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 4 May 1864 Edward Jackson is listed as delinquent in his taxes ($84.91) for 1862 along with numerous other Jacksons, all property in the 7th ward near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He owes taxes on 18 lots and 3 houses.
"Edward Jackson's death certificate (NYC Archives # 0533) indicates that he died at Downing Street, Brooklyn, NY, on 25 January 1864 at age 47 of _________pneumonia. Letters of Administration were filed 15 February 1864 for Edward Jackson. Unfortunately virtually all the bound volumes of Letters of Administration before 1900 for Kings County have gone missing.
"Edward was first interred in a 'receiving tomb' on 27 Jan 1864 and was then buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY in a plot that includes his wife and her second husband, George Ross on 4 May 1882. His stone bears the dates 1817-1864. However, the interment record at Green-Wood cemetery indicates that Edward was kept in a receiving tomb (#4259) from his death on 25 Jan 1864 until his burial on 4 May 1882. Apparently when he died Mary lacked the funds to bury him.
"A death notice in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 26 January 1864 declared that Edward died on 25 January 1864 at age 46 years 7 months and 21 days. Friends were invited to the funeral to be held at his mother in law's house ( Mrs. Anthony) at Hickory Street near Classon Avenue on Wednesday 27 January at 1:00 p.m."

"In the 1840 Brooklyn City Directory a Jacob S. Jackson is listed as a milkman at the same address as Coe D. Jackson: Wallabout near Clinton Ave.
"Birth and death dates are from the gravestone in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. According to the 1870 US Census, Jacob was blind and possibly deaf. In the 1885 Brooklyn City Directory he is listed as a lawyer with an office at 365 Flatbush Avenue and a house at 35a Prospect Place. His mother, Mary L., widow of George, is listed as living at the same address. Edward is not listed in the 1886, 1887 and 1898-99 directories but reappears in the 1900-01 Brooklyn City directory as a real estate broker on East New York Avenue at the corner of Saratoga Avenue. His home address is Amboy at the corner of Sutter. His entry is the same for 1901-02.

1081. Fanny Jackson-5647
Notes Contributed by Frank M. Jackson:
"Fanny is living in Hempstead on 1 April 1844 according to a deed in which John Jackson and Margaret Jackson sell farms in Brooklyn to their children ( Kings Co., Liber 184, p.310)."Fanny is identified as the wife of Parker Baldwin in the tax delinquency notices for 1862 in the 3 May 1864 issue of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
"There is a Fanny Baldwin, age 54, living with her husband, James C. Baldwin, age 55 listed in the 1880 US Census (T00877, p; 311B) and children: Viola G. Baldwin, age 22, Emily A. Baldwin, age 20, Charles H. Baldwin, age 18, Robert W. Baldwin, age 15, Arthur B. Baldwin, age 12, and a son-in-law, Jacob H. Skinner, age 26. This may or may not be Fanny Jackson, the age is close. Her sister, Ann, married a Baldwin."
I (Janie) thought the following 1870 census was a record of the sister Ann who married a Baldwin and was raising her nephew, Fanning Baldwin; but the ages of this Ann and Stephen are not consistant with the record of Fanny's sister and her husband. But is too much coincidence to throw away. Keep this census record on hand for now.

The following census records present a puzzlement for the wife or wives of Noah Jackson that needs more research. Here is Noah in 1850 and 1870 with an apparent second wife named Jane E.I have found the burial record of Jane E. Bunting, widow of Noah Jackson. This would tie in with the niece in 1880 census record.

Althause is the spelling of his name on his tombstone though most current records use the spelling of Althouse. His birth date is not taken from the Find-a-Grave site which shows photo of tombstone with no birth date. So the birth date of 12 Dec 1786 is calculated from the age at death which is on the tombstone.
Tombstone Inscription:
aged 82 years, 16 days
This site uses the birthdate of 11 Aug 1785 which is calculated from the d/o/d and age at death.
