2035. John Henry Jones-9257
Portion of Obituary published in NYGBS 'The Record' July 1905, pg 228:
JONES, John Henry, a member of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, died Jan. 1, 1905, in New York City, aged fifty-three years. He was born Dec. 27, 1851 at Cold Spring Harbor, L.I., and was the son of Samuel A. Jones and Mary Esther MOTT, daughter of James W. Mott and Abigail Jones. His father was the son of John Henry (sic) Jones and Loretta HEWLETT, daughter of Judge Divine Hewlett by his wife Anna, daughter of Jacob COLES; who was the son of John Jones and Hannah Hewlett, daughter of John Hewlett by his wife Sarah TOWNSEND; who was the son of William Jones and Phoebe JACKSON, daughter of the second Col. John Jackson of Jamestown, L.I.; who was the son of Major Thomas Jones of Oyster Bay, L.I. . . .After retirement in 1894 he settled upon his father's place in Cold spring Harbor, where he devoted himself to the early history of Long Island and the "Jones's Genealogy", which latter work was practically finished at the time of his death. "Had his life been spared until threescore years and ten, his researches and his indefatigable industry would have added much to what is known of the early history of Long Island . . .
From the book, "A History of Long Island, 1903:" No issue.
Jones Family of L.I., pg 141: "In 1804 Mr. Jones' father-in-law, Judge Divine Hewlett, conveyed to Mr. Jones' father two small pieces of land just north of the grist mill on Cold Spring Harbor, and on the west side of the highway on which were afterwards built the first dwelling house and store of John H. Jones."
John Hewlett Jones' grandson, John Henry Jones, is the author of "The Jones Family of Long Island". He states on pg 141 that John H. was named for his grandfather, John Hewlett. So John Henry Jones' obit naming his grandfather as John Henry Jones is probably an error.
From the book, "A History of Long Island, 1903:" He was a strong character and most enterprising man. In his early days he was engaged in the outfiiting of whaling vessels and the manufacturing of woolen goods. His large agricultural interests and management of a general country store, the largest of its kind in that part of the Island, brought him very prominentrly before the public. He left a family of nine children"
An examination of Elizabeth's pedigree chart reveals Jackson ancestors on both her paternal and maternal side! For this reason I have included her children as another generation.
Israel Horsefield Hewlett-16968
Israel Horsefield Hewlett and Eliza A. Hewlett are spouses as well as 3rd cousins 1 time removed. Their common ancestors are George W. Hewlett and Mary Bayles.
I've seen Israel's name spelled both Horsefield and Horsfield. Israel and Deborah had four children acording to Antony Maitland and 7 children according to Larry Sutton's rootsweb chart.
1033. Israel Horsefield Hewlett-16968
Israel Horsefield Hewlett and Eliza A. Hewlett are spouses as well as 3rd cousins 1 time removed. Their common ancestors are George W. Hewlett and Mary Bayles.
1041. Mary Jackson-967
Mary likely died as a result of childbirth as her child was born Nov 20 and died Nov 21 and Mary died 3 days later.
1042. Elizabeth Jackson-1064
Elizabeth became Thomas Jones' third wife.
The Jones Book gives her burial place as "Jones Burial Plot, West Neck, South Oyster Bay, New York". The Find-a-Grave site calls it "Jones Family Burial Ground", located in Massapequa, Nassau County, New York. I believe this reflects the changing names of some of these villages and hamlets and not actually a different location.
1049. Lydia Ann Jackson-5683
Lydia and her husband George De Peyster are mentioned in her grandfather John's 1820 will. She is to receive her inheritance of money but no land, four years after her grandfather's death. The money was to be put out at interest and managed by the executors of the will until the four years passed.
Was married when she was mentioned in June 1832 as an heir of her uncle Samuel Jackson's estate. See his Notes.
1053. Catharine B. Jackson-1078
Catharine is not mentioned in her grandfather's 1820 will as were her brothers John and Robert. Perhaps Grandfather provided only for male descendants.
Ah, that must be so, as she was married when she was mentioned in June 1832 as an heir of her uncle Samuel Jackson's estate. See his Notes.
By 1850 Catherine is a widow and is found in Oyster Bay. Two of her sons, Rutger and Andrew are found enumerated in the household of Samuel and Abigail Farington. The handwriting of the enumerator is bad and Farington may not be spelled right.
