Parker, Thos. B M 21 svt single Farm Laborer SC SC SCIf I have read this census correctly (and I think I have), it does say that Laer/Leah is Travis Evans' mother-in-law. This will mean that records saying Leah died in 1875 are incorrect, even as to the inscriptions on the gravestone. The history of the cemetery and the markers indicate that many were placed there well after the burial by descendants wanting to honor their heritage. Another d/o/d error is noted on the record of Capt. John Blakeney; determined by someone else's research. Both of these errors are now perpetuated in stone.

William Blakeney;
3rd Sergeant Company B.
William was born in 1832 in Fayette County, Alabama, the great-grandson of Revolutionary hero Captain John Blakeney. William enlisted in the 41st and fought with his unit. He was listed in the hospital at Chattanooga Tennessee in November/ December 1862. He was actively engaged at th Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863. In the next report he is listed as being in the hospital in the commandered Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Charleston, Tennessee, where he died of pneumonia about November/ December 1863. William is probably buried in the [Cumberland Presbyterian] Church Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
The website http://blakeneyufamily.org/Geneology.com has that William was married to two wives; Elizabeth Corder and Elizabeth Clanton. This webmaster does not know which wife was on this 1850 and/or 1860 census record.
Elizabeth in 1850 was 18 yrs old; in 1860 she was 23 years old. So was it a different Elizabeth or an enumerator's error?
1890. Mary Polly Blakeney-24513
Note that the birth states of Mary's parents do not agree with the genealogical record. I have no explanation.

Deed Book W page 280 - Dec 5,1827 - Elijah Jackson to James H. Ratliff - $193 for 56 acres on the bank of Wolf Branch. Moved to Sumter Co., Alabama before 1840 and apparently died there before 1840.
Clarissa 'Clary' Rushing-10434
According to Bob Mitchell:
Clarissa is found on the 1840 Sumter Co., Alabama US Census with three male children and three female children all under 20 years old. in 1850 Clarissa is found with four children still at home.
923. Jane Jackson-10379
Note from Bob Mitchell: Information from Anson Co., North Carolina Website, Gathings Family, by James Gathings: Some researchers show Jane Jackson's birth date as 26 July 1801. On 15 August 1846 Jane Jackson Gathings petitioned the Probate Court of Monroe County & State of Mississippi to settle the estate of James Gathings. The petition states her late husband (James Gathings) did possess a large estate both real (in North Carolina and Mississippi) and personal property, leaving it to her and a number of children surviving him. Jane Jackson Gathings died 23 May 1876 in Union County, North Carolina. She is buried in the David A. Covington lot in Monroe, North Carolina.
----------------------------------------------------------
A family member has written: "I visited Jane's grave in 1990 in Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, Union Co., NC. She is buried in the David A. Covington lot, and is beside that of her daughter, Susannah Ann Pemelia Gathings Covington, and her son-in-law, David A. Covington. Her grave is marked by the most prominent marker in the cemetery."She left an extensive will which one family said of it: 'the will reads more like a business contract than a will!' A previous lawsuit to gain access to her husband's wealthy, unmarried, brother's estate was apparently still up in the air and she made specific bequests as to how each of her children should handle their share (if they got it). She was a strong and loving mother who wanted equality for her daughters and fought for it. Under the law at the time, the widows received 1/3 of the estate and the sons the rest, leaving the daughters with nothing. Jane didn't feel that was right and recorded in her will documentation of notes held against her sons in order for them to give up some of their share of their father's estate to their sisters or pay a price.
According to Bob Mitchell:
Information from Anson Co., North Carolina Website, Gathings Family, by James Gathings: James Gathings was an active buyer and seller of land in both Anson and Union Counties. He bought some of his land from his father and he was a recipient of two land grants in Anson County. Other land transactions are recorded in Anson and Union County Courthouses. James Gathings died on 4 July 1844 in Union County, North Carolina. He died intestate and there is a large collection of estate settlement records stored in the basement of the Monroe County, Mississippi, Courthouse. He left a large estate, and there was a significant amount of litigation associated with the settlement of his estate. One has to wonder why a family of this wealth and position would pull up their roots and migrate to Mississippi and Texas. He is buried in a cemetery on his farm, about 11 miles from Monroe, Union County, North Carolina. The small cemetery contains four graves: James Gathings, Susannah Gathings (daughter of James J. and Martha Wall Covington Gathings), John M. Randel (son of Sydney and Mary Jane Gathings Randel), and Benjamin C. Covington (son of David and Susannah Gathings Covington). All of the graves except that of James Gathings are those of children, his grandchildren. The cemetery is difficult to find because it is completely grown over with new growth trees and carolina jasmine and surrounded with mature forest. From the records in the Monroe County, Mississippi Court house it has been determined that James Gathings and his wife, Jane, moved to Monroe County about 1843-1844. The records show that they owned land and were in residence there and that Jane later laid claim to the property after James' death. M. T.Gathings of Winston Salem, North Carolina believes that James Gathings died on a trip back to North Carolina because none of the Mississippi family knew the exact date of his death. This would explain the record showing that James Gathings died in Union County, North Carolina.
James owned a cotton plantation. An appraisal of the personal property in James' estate was made in 1845 and it totaled more than $25,000, the largest portion of it being the value of 46 slaves.
James Gathings was an active buyer and seller of land in both the Anson County and Union County records. In addition to the sale of land from his father, he was the recipient of two land grants in Anson County.
From Bart Morgan: "Joseph Thomas Burch was a fairly well off land owner in Chesterfield District, South Carolina. His land was near the North Carolina Border. The 'Old Burch Cemetery' is located there.
"When Sherman's army came through Chesterfield County they burned Joseph Thomas' and Susannah's home and most of the other buildings. Joseph was held prisoner for a while. All five of Joseph's and Susannah's living sons were in the 4th Regiment, 12th Bat, 4th Sqd., A Company of the South Carolina Cavalry."
****
According to the Burch Family Book by W. Bernettte Burch, pg 2: "He was a large slaveholder and planter captured by Sherman's Army and his home, property, etc. burned or destroyed. His 6 sons served in the Confederate Army through the entire war and were all calvarymen."

The Burch book on pg 3 also says she was still single in 1920.

The following research Notes are contributed by Bob Mitchell 14 Feb 2008.
Proving that Abraham's first wife was indeed Elizabeth d/o Jesse Jackson was my immediate goal as I have seen it in many internet files, but no proof. Most of the internet files have the wrong children for this family as well. Someone found an Elizabeth Harrell on the 1850 Anson Co. census and assumed that she was the widow of Abraham and lists her children as those of Abraham and Elizabeth Jackson.
I was contacted by Lewis Harrell who is a direct descendant of Abraham. He had solid info on the children of the first marriage, second marriage and subsequent marriage of the second wife. He also had read a document (described below) on file at the Scott Co. MS Court House that makes the connection for Abraham's first wife to Jesse Jackson.
Here is the story: Abraham and Elizabeth Jackson are married in Anson Co. Their first four children were born there. They moved to Sumter Co., Alabama where they had two more children. Elizabeth Jackson Harrell apparently died there abt 1839.
Abraham remarried to Elizabeth Meador in Mar 1840 and then died 10 Mar 1841 leaving Elizabeth with his six children from his previous marriage and several months pregnant with their son, A. J. (Jesse) Harrell who was born Sep 1841.
1841: Sumter Co., Alabama, Petition for Sale of Land, Estate of Abraham Harrell, ...To Honorable Henry F. Scruggs, Orphans Court, Sumter Co., Alabama...heirs of said estate are as follows to wit William Harrell, John Harrell, Lewis Harrell, Joel Harrell, Sara Harrell, Caroline Harrell and Harrell children of said intestate (Abraham died without a Will) wherefor your petitioner prays your Honor to grant an order for sale of said land...Drew Williams appointed guardian and executor...final action in February Court Term 1842. James Hair, Petitioner (This land was bought by Elizabeth Meador Harrell, widow of Abraham)
Elizabeth Meador remarried in 1844 to Michael M. Parker. They moved to Scott Co., Mississippi taking the minor children of Abraham Harrell and his first wife and Elizabeth's son by Abraham with them. Elizabeth and Michael Parker had four children in Mississippi. I found them on the 1850 Scott Co., MS census with some of Abraham's children and their children in the same household. Remnants of the family are also found in 1860 and 1870 Scott Co., MS. Certainly by this time the older children were grown and gone.
The interesting fact about this whole scenario are two documents of record: Marriage Contract, Elizabeth Harrell to Jesse Jackson, Indenture made 23 Dec 1844, Elizabeth Harrell, Jesse Jackson and Michael K. Parker filed in the court of Sumter County, Alabama. Elizabeth is about to remarry to Michael Parks, but Jesse Jr. intercedes on behalf of the children of Abraham's first marriage to Elizabeth Jackson and the one child of Abraham Harrell and Elizabeth Meador Harrell to ensure they receive their rightful share of Abraham's estate. These children were considered to be orphans due to both their legal father and mother being deceased. The action occurred in the Orphans Court of Sumter Co., Alabama. It also states that the children will be party to the settlement of the estate of Deliah Meador Jackson, deceased widow of Jesse Jackson, Sr. This action was filed by Elizabeth Meador Harrell on behalf of the children against the estate of Delilah Jackson.
Also on file in the Scott County, Mississippi Court House is a document between Michael K. Parker and Elizabeth Parker attesting to the provisions of the original document filed in Alabama. It was filed on 20 June 1851, witnessed by Ed Cavenah, Clerk. Copies furnished by Lewis Harrell 13 Feb 2008
Note: The Jesse Jackson in the above document is Jesse Jackson, Jr. son of Jesse Jackson and Delilah Meador Jackson. He is an uncle to the sons of Abraham Harrell from his first wife, Elizabeth Jackson Harrell. This document proves the names of the sons of the first marriage, the son of the second marriage and the fact that Abraham's first wife was indeed Elizabeth Jackson, daughter of Jesse Jackson and Delilah Meador Jackson.
