Georgia Marriages to 1850
Name: David Rutherford
Spouse: Alcy Myers
Marriage Date: 6 Oct 1808
Marriage County: Jackson
Marriage State: GeorgiaFrom the application of Clement Hill Myers: Mahala and her brother David Jackson were born in South Carolina. Her first husband died early and left a son William Myers and a daughter. Mahala and her two children were taken by the Jacksons to Jackson County, Georgia, where she married second October 6, 1808, David Rutherford. About 1837 the Rutherfords left Gwinnett county and settled in Walker county, Georgia - first in Cane Creek District, and then about two miles southwest of Rossville where they died on the same day and are buried in the same grave in the Hawkins Cemetery.
John was said to be one of the first settlers of Rossville, Walker Co., Georgia prior to 1848-1850.
892. Benjamin Franklin Jackson Sr.-10421
According to Bob Mitchell:
1820: A Benjamin Jackson was enumerated in Gwinnet Co., Georgia as head of family. The enumeration is as follows: 1 male under 10; 1 male 16-26; 1 male 25-45; 2 females under 10; 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45 and 1 female over 45.
1840: USCensus for Walker Co., Georgia has a Benjamin Jackson enumerated as head of family. The enumeration is as follows: 1 male under 5; 1 male 5-10; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 30-40 and 1 male 60-70; 2 females 5-10; 1 female 30-40 and 1 female 40-50. This appears to be two families, difficult to determine where the children should be placed. The male head of family is assumed to be the eldest and in this case seems to be a little too old for Benjamin, could be an error in age. The next oldest male and female could be a son and his wife from the first marriage of Benjamin, Sr.

An alternative name for the Jackson Cemetery is "Pleasant View" east of Mulberry. This info from find-a-grave website.
893. Sarah Jackson-10422
B. Dowdey notes that she died of smallpox.
Georgia Marriages to 1850
Name: Sary Jackson
Spouse: George Brogdon
Marriage Date: 4 Jul 1807
Marriage County: Jackson
Marriage State: Georgia
George Washington Brogdon-10690
According to Jacquelyn Cannon: George donated 50 acres of land for the Lawrenceville Methodist campground.
On the 1850 Census Sugar Hill, Gwinnett Co., Georgia; there is a female child, Julian, age 6, listed with George and Sarah. I (Janie) don't know if this is a child of their's or a grandchild, as George is 68 and Sarah is 50. She is not listed with them on the 1860 census.
On his son George's 1880 census, the son says his father was born in Tennessee.
895. Seaborn Jones Jackson-10424
Note from Genealogist Grady Langley, Jr.: "From the Meyers papers in the Georgia State Archives, Edward Jackson owned a mill on Little Mulberry, north of Auburn, about 2-3 miles. It was operated by Seaborn Jones Jackson. Today, Auburn, GA is located in Barrow Co., half way between Hoschton, Jackson Co. and Grayson, Gwinnett Co. Barrow Co. was formed in 1914 from parts of Jackson, Gwinnett and Walton Counties."

Notes from Grady Langley 29 Feb 2008: "Nata's parents have not been identified with certainty by any Langley researcher that I know of. Most believe the parents are Thomas and Nancy Langley. They are found in Jackson Co. as early as 1809. Supposedly they lived near the community of Braselton. That location is still in Jackson Co. today, but not far from Auburn where Edward Jackson lived. Feel free to use the "probable" parents of Nata Harris Langley Jackson on your web site. I only ask that you qualify that info as not proven.
"Thomas and Nancy Langley moved from Jackson Co. to Gwinnett Co. about 1827 and probably settled just south of Lawrenceville. Edward Jackson and family relocated also, to just south of Grayson in Gwinnett Co. -- again, not far from the Langley's.
"Evidence that Nancy is the mother of Nata, and Thomas T., etc. is that she is listed in the 1850 census of Gwinnett Co. living next door to Enoch Langley and his family as well as Jeptha Langley and his family. Enoch and Jeptha are her sons, and brothers of Nata. Nancy is shown as a widow in this census. She was also there in the 1840 census with children in the household, one possibly was Nata, but unfortunately that census only has the names of household heads and counts family members by age brackets. There was not husband listed in that census.
"Keep in mind that it is still theory that the Jackson's and Langley's were acquaintances back in Jackson Co.
"I have found that her first husband was James Davis -- at least I think this was the same Nata mentioned above. I found this bit of info in the Meyers Collection in the Georgia State Archives. So, Little Berry M. Jackson was her second husband. I don't have an exact marriage date, but it was certainly 1930 or earlier since her first child was born Sept. 1830. This certainly does not agree with the birth year of 1818-1819 mentioned earlier. Surely she was older than 11 or 12 when she married -- and her second marriage at that. But, such marriages were legal back then, and known to happen."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Janie: Her estimated age on the census records varied each year. In 1850 she was 32, in 1860 she was 48, in 1870 she was 56 and in 1880 she was 62.

I was pleased to find that you have a maiden name and parents for the wife of Claiborne Jackson (1815-1870). I have merely Martha Unknown. Can you give me a source for this marriage that I can cite?
Response: Not an actual historical document, i.e. marraige license -- however, it you look at the 1850 census record on which Claiborn and Martha appear, just prior to their entry is the entry for Martha's parents and younger siblings. According to Bob Mitchell: "Living in Stewart Co. in 1820, Gibson Co. in 1830, Madison Co. in 1840 and Gibson Co. in 1850. Bob Mitchell: "Madison Co, TN Court Minutes Book 1821-1825 Vol.1, page 368. Administration of all goods etc of David Jackson dec. granted to Susan Jackson and David Jackson. John Rasberry and Abel Rainey security." (John Rasberry and Abel Raines were sons-in-law of David Jackson.)
1840 Madison Co., Tennessee
Abel Rains 1 male & 1 female 40-50; males: 1 -5, 1 5-9, 1 10-14, 1 15-19, 1 20-29; females 1 5-9, 1 10-14, 2 15-19; nine children altogether. In the 1850 Census, Abel was enumerated living with the family of Wm. Whitwell in Hickman Co., Tennessee. His wife Delilah Elizabeth was living with their son David in Gibson Co., Tennessee, 4 counties west of Hickman. Abel was a carpenter and perhaps had a live-in-until-it's-finished job there or perhaps was separated for some other reason. Abel's birth location in this 1850 census was North Carolina though Raines descendants say he was born in South Carolina. The 1850 separation apparently was a permanent one, as Abel is found in 1860 living with a second wife and family.
An interesting recap of the Raines censuses is found here which includes Abel with his second family in the 1860 census:

When Uncle Jack Raines visited us, I asked him why Grandfather Raines (Abel) left his home and children and never again saw or heard of them. He said that he had accepted I.O.U.'s from people who never paid him and that he feared being unable to meet his own obligations. It was then he went to Perry County, married Grandmother Nancy Ann Turner. For a chart of Abel's second wife and family, see the records at http://www.geocities.com/heartland/meadows/3150/raines.html
