Emily 'Emma' Wells-14201

Note by Bob Mitchell: Emily lists her home state as Kentucky on 1850 and 1860 US Census records, but in 1870 she listed Tennessee. Emily, listed as Ema, was the head of the household in 1870. The family apparently left Sumter County between 1870 and 1880 as they are not listed on the Sumter County Census in 1880.

Janie: Emma apparently had trouble knowing where she was born! In the 1880 Census below she was born in Virginia.

Mary Spencer-10510

Earlier I had a birth date of 25 Jun 1770 until I realized that would have caused her to be married at age 12. That may have been possible in those days, but it is so doubtful, that I am removing the birth date hoping that a more likely birth date will be found.

873. Hulda Jackson-10456

The Pension Application of Huldah Hill, widow of John Hill is long and I won't copy it here. It can be found at http://southerncampaign.org/pen/index.htm .

The application is dated 3 Feb 1838 from Anson Co., NC. In it she states she has remained unmarried since his death, he was in the service two or three years before their marriage and at least 3 months after their marriage. She gives John's birthdate 4 Feb 1749; location, Halifax County, NC, and his date of death was 14 Aug 1817. Date of their marriage was 4 Aug 1781. Also mentions that her parents opposed their marriage because she had not known him long, but John sent a young boy to get her and she left the family home without the parents knowledge or permission to marry him. Their marriage was performed by Stephen Miller J.P. and James Duncan a witness. She mentions her brother Isaac Jackson, her brother Capt. Jonathan Jackson, her father Col. John Jackson. Her husband had been taken prisioner and parolled. Her father and brothers are now deceased. She offers the large family Bible as a record of the family:

Abel Jackson was one of the early pioneers who moved from North Carolina to the Indian Territories of Middle and West Tennessee. He settled in Humphreys County, Tennessee. Humphreys County was part of Stewart County until 1809 when the southern portion was divided off and proclaimed Humphreys County. In 1835 the portion of Humphreys County that was on the west side of the Tennessee River became Benton County. Perry County shared a border to the south of Humphreys County. The western portion of Perry County, across the Tennessee River, became Decatur County in 1845. All of these counties were settled by North Carolina pioneers between 1800 and 1830. The Jackson Family and the Rushing Family can be found in all of these during the timeframes mentioned above.

1859 Obituary of John Fields Auld & Mary Jackson Auld of Union Parish Louisiana

New Orleans Christian Advocate, issue of 16 or 23 Nov 1859, No. 43, page 2, Column 2:
==================================================================================
NOTE: John Fields Auld left Anson County North Carolina and moved to what is now Lowndes County Alabama in the latter 1820s. He sold his farm there in 1834, and by November 1835, he had settled in Kemper County Mississippi. John Fields Auld's eldest son Elijah Michael Auld had married Margaret Jane Ward in 1830. Margaret's brother David Ward was one of the earliest settlers of what is now Union Parish, as he settled there in February 1837. Elijah Michael Auld and his father-in-law Elisha Ward, Sr. joined David Ward in north Louisiana in the spring of 1838. In 1841, John F. Auld sold his Mississippi farm and moved to Claiborne Parish, where he lived until the early 1850s. At that time, he moved to eastern Union Parish, presumably to be near his four sons who lived there: Elijah Michael Auld, James Alexander Auld, Sherwood A. Auld, and Washington C. Auld. Some descendents claim that John and Mary Auld died in a carriage accident, but I have never seen any documentation for this.

BOTH DIED IN ONE DAY

'Lovely and beautiful in their lives in death they were not divided.'

Died, on the 28th of August 1859, JOHN F. AULD and MARY AULD (Mary Jackson.) They were born in Anson county, N.C. Father Auld was born 1788, Mother Auld, 1791. They married in Anson county, moved to Alabama, thence to Union parish Louisiana, where they departed this life full assurance of a blessed immortaility. At an early age they professed religion and joined the M.E. Church, of which they lived consistent members till death.
It may be said of them, "they were one." Together they lived - together they died. As they had borne the burden and heat of the day of life together, they desired and prayed to be released at the same time. God granted them their desire. One did not know that the other's spirit had departed. Together their spirits ascended, and now rest in the bosom of their Redeemer. D. P. Cullin
