Notes

700. Sarah Ross-23859

Sarah is the third daughter listed in John Ross' 1805 will. See will in her father's notes.

"The Record" pg 181: "William Ford, Jr. married Sarah Ross in 1800-1. They lived in Bonhampton where all the children were born. It is not positively known when the family moved to Perth Amboy, it may have been in 1816, as his mother and wife joined the Presbyterian Church in Perth Amboy that year. This house has been occupied by six generations: . . . William Ford, Jr. and three of his sons, Samuel, William Jackson and Edwin, were shoemakers and the business was continued in the house until the death of William Jackson Ford in 1853."

Her birthdate is estimated from her age at d/o/d mentioned in the Ford Family Bible. Aged 49 years.

"A paper found in the old Family Bible, Perth Amboy, states:
'The house now 285 High Street (Perth Amboy, N. J.) was built by William Ford, Junior, his mother Margaret Ford providing the money. The land was bought Feb. 1, 1811, but the house was not built until some time after. William Ford, Jr., married Sarah Ross in 1800-1. They lived in Bonhampton where all the children were born. Five additional children are listed in the Ford Family Bible Records but they are not listed on this chart. See source record.

740. Abigail Jackson-20260

Several possible birth locations are offered for Abigail Jackson (1) is Washington Co., PA and (2) Wilkes Co., NC. I have no proof records of either though the DAR accepts the Washington Co. PA location. I've also found the 1880 census of her 71 year old son Stephen which says his mother was born in Georgia. It is possible she was born in NJ as so many charts say; because her father William was born there. But I'm thinking most of those charts say NJ because we know that's where Edward's children were born and early researchers thought she was Edward's daughter. LATER: Also her daughter Martha says her mother was born in Georgia on the 1880 census. So this 1880 Georgia reference is a new area to look for William's marriage and birth of his children.

Conflicting info about Abigail being named Sarah Abigail and a dau of Edward Jackson of Harrison Co., VA has been refuted in the Conflicting Data section of the Jackson website: http://www.jacksonfamilygenealogy.com

Marriage info from image of the actual bond signed by William Jackson and Jonathan Hughes. The date is clearly 11 July 1786. The image is available in the Conflicting Data section of the above web site.

In 1786 William Jackson signs marriage bond for Abigale Jackson to Jonathan Hughes. Jonathan was born in Harrison County (W)VA; he enlisted and served in various locations during the Revolutionary War and after the war, he became an itinerant schoolmaster. He went to Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1783 and married there in 1786 to Abigail Jackson. By 1808 Jonathan and Abigail moved to his home area of Harrison County, Virginia where several of their children were born, raised and married there. Jonathan and Abigail spent time in Ohio and Indiana and in 1835 went back to Harrison County "because I have children who settled there" per his pension application.

Janie's question: I keep running into genealogy sites that have her burial location Salem, Doddridge County and/or Salem, Harrison County. Are there two Salems; one in Doddridge and one in Harrison, OR did the county lines move at some time?? I've looked everywhere for a map of Salem in Doddridge and cannot find it, but my genie buddy says there are two Salems, one in each county. Specifically, I'm trying to find which county that Abigail Jackson Hughes is buried in: Seventh Day Baptist Church Cem, Salem, WV - no county given. Later: Answer from Doddridge County GenWeb researcher: There is only one Salem, WV and it extends into both counties. The Cemetary is in Doddridge side of Salem.

Jonathan Hughes-20261

The following paragraphs were copied from Don Norman's files at Hacker Creek Pioneer Descendants website:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hcpd/norman/HUGHES/WILLIAM.htm

"Jonathan was a veteran of the American Revolution. His successful application for a veteran's pension in Gallia County, OH was dated March 19, 1834. Excerpts from his pension file, S9591, detail his military service.
He enlisted in Greenbrier County VA as a Minuteman in June 1774, under Captain John Cook and Lieutenant William Gilliland and was sent to Ellis Fort at the "Little Levels". He continued there until the spring of 1777, when he was attached to Captain Hamilton's company and stationed at Jamor Rennix's for three months.
In the spring of 1778, he went to Hampshire County VA and in October 1779 joined Captain George Bell's Company of Colonel Posten's Regiment and was promoted to Ensign and served a tour of three months. In 1780, he served a further tour of duty under the same officers.
After the war, Jonathan was an itinerant schoolmaster and was teaching in Gallia County, OH when he was 90. He went to Wilkes County North Carolina in 1783, to South Carolina in 1790, to Georgia in 1791, to Greenbrier County VA in January 1792 and to Harrison County in 1808. On January 28, 1829, he was in Gallia County, OH. In 1833, he spent four months in Jefferson county, Indiana. On July 7, 1835, Jonathan applied for a transfer of pension from the OH roll
to VA, as he had "...returned to Harrison County, where my children live."

741. Rebecca Jackson-21392

Ashe County was cut from Wilkes in 1799. The family had not moved from where they were in Wilkes County, but the new county of Ashe encompassed where they lived.
It is said that Rebecca died 4 weeks after the birth of her son Asa in Dec 1801, therefore it is an easy assumption that she died as a result of complications of childbirth.

The following quote provided by Chris Fairchild 26 Aug 2008:
According to Jean Fairchild Gilmore's book, Early Fairchilds in America, under the Abiud Fairchld family, page 114-116, it says:
"In 1795 Abiud is again in Wilkes County, N.C. where he appears on that county's tax list. In 1801, his wife Rebecca is supposed to have died. There is some confusion as to Rebecca's surname. For this writer, the DAR application #502690 where the applicant has put Johnson, crossed it out and entered Jackson, the name of Jackson is acceptable. There is also the argument for the surname Jackson in that one term of Abiud's enlistment of three months in the American Revolution in North Carolina was that he was under the command of Capt. William Jackson, whose daughter he could have married. There is no doubt a second marriage was to a woman whose name may have been Johnson, causing the Jackson/Johnson confusion" .

A study has been made of ALL mentions of a William Jackson in the Wilkes County area from 1786 to abt 1794. That study is provided here for your consideration. It should be read to learn how and why I have determined that Rebecca who married Abiud Fairchild is William's daughter. http://www.jacksonfamilygenealogy.com/pages/conflictingWilliamJacksonTwo.htm

Quote from the final paragraph of that study:
"This leaves the question of Rebecca Jackson who married Abiud Fairchild. There is no proof that the Pennsylvania William, who was captured in Charleston, was even in Wilkes county. That leaves open the probability that Rebecca's father was William #1, #2 and #7. This does appear logical given the fact of Rebecca's husband Abuid serving with William as per his pension application. Also Abuid's sister Abigail married James Jackson, William's cousin. (Recent DNA testing proves the relationship between James and William.) Rebecca's daughter Phoebe married James Albert Sewell, a son of Mary Gardiner Tompkins, a step-daughter of William's sister Elizabeth Jackson Tompkins. William Jackson and his sister Elizabeth Jackson Tompkins traveled together from New Jersey to North Carolina per the Jackson Ledger. These families are all interrelated and it is an easy assumption that Rebecca belongs to this group of folks and is not the daughter of an unrelated Jackson.

Abiud Fairchild-21380

The Pension Application of Abiud Fairchild S15420 can be found at http://southerncampaign.org/pen/index.htm,
also here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyfloyd/Mis_files/pension_abiud_fairchild.htm

"Abiud Fairchild, the Revolutionary soldier, moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina, to what is now Johnson County, Kentucky, in the year of 1808, and settled on Big Paint Creek. His home was near Fish Trap Meeting House, a famous Baptist Church building some six miles from Paintsville." The forgoing information concerning Abuid Fairchild was copied from pages 127-134 of "Harman's Station" written by Wm. E. Connelley, of Topeka, Kansas and published by the Torch Press of New York in 1910.

** This record is for Eben Fairchild, Abiud's father. Abuid is not listed in 1790 under his own name in Wilkes County. Neither Tennessee or Georgia have an existing 1790 census. Eben's code is 1-2-4 so I don't believe Abiud is included with Ebenezer's household which has only 2 sons under 16 listed.

Info from Abiud's pension app:
1781 lived in Wilkes Co., N.C. after war until he went to Floyd Co., KY in 1808
This statement conflicts with the fact of Abuid's being enumerated on the 1800 census in ASHE Co. He had not moved and probably still considered that he still lived in Wilkes. But the area he lived in was cut out of Wilkes and named Ashe County in 1799; therefore, his appearance on the 1800 Ashe County census.

1800 Census Morgan Dist, Ashe Co., NC.

Fairchild, Ben 00010 33010
Fairchild, Cyrus 20010 20010
It is impossible to detect close neightbors from this 1800 census because it has been alphabetized!
Abiud and Rebecca were 26 thru 44 yrs old; born between 1756 & 1774 and have six daughters. Nancy was married and out of the household by then.
1799 Ashe County was cut from Wilkes County so now the family is found in Ashe because the county line moved.

Dec 1800 son, Asa born - Since Abuid's home was now in Ashe Co; his son was prob born there and Rebecca died there though most records still record them as being in Wilkes County.
1801 24 Jan wife Rebecca Jackson died now within Ashe Co.! And by 1808 Abiud is said to be 'of Carter Co', so he had moved slightly west to Carter Co. TN. Father-in-law, Wm Jackson had bought land in 1794 in Washington District, NC which later became Carter Co TN. William's deed is recorded in Carter County and is transcribed on my site. It could be assumed that Abiud took his motherless children the short distance from Ashe county over to live temporarily with his deceased wife's father, William Jackson in Carter Co. Therefore, when he sold his land in Wilkes, he was said to be 'of Carter County'. Then it looks like after selling the land, he moved to Floyd County, Kentucky.

1388. Asa Fairchild-21399

Since Ashe County was cut from Wilkes in 1799 and Abiud was on the 1800 Ashe Co, NC census, Asa would be expected to be born in Ashe County. The family had not moved from where they were in Wilkes County, but the new county of Ashe encompassed where they lived. It is assumed that his mother Rebecca died as a result of complications of childbirth, but that is just an assumption.

744. Stephen Jackson-8515

The deed below was transcribed by Darrell Jackson:

The State of Tennessee No 9351
To all to whom these presents shall come,
Greeting

Know ye, that in consideration of an entry made in the Surveyors Office of the Sixth district of N 4699 dated the 9th day of February 1819 founded on a certificate of Number 878 issued by the Regst of East Tennessee to James P. Taylor for twenty-five Acres of land dated the 2nd day of January 1815 six acres of which are assigned to Stephen Jackson, the enterer, there is granted by the said State of Tennessee unto the said Stephen Jackson and his heirs a certain tract or parcel of land containing six acres, lying in the county of Carter in said district on South East side of little Doe, Roan Creek Beginning on a white Walnut corner to Showns thence South twenty five East, ten and one half poles to a Stake and pointers thence North fifty seven East ninety two poles to a dogwood and white Oak thence north twenty five West ten and one half poles to a Stake, on Jackson’s old line thence with his line South fifty seven West ninety two poles to the Beginning.
Surveyed August 25th, 1819 with its appurtenances, To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances, to the said Stephen Jackson and his heirs forever. In Witness whereof, William Carroll, Governor of the State of Tennessee, hath here unto set his hand and caused the great Seal of the State to be affixed at Murfreesborough on the 24th Day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty four and of American Independence the forty ninth.
By the Governor Wm. Carroll

Daniel Graham, Secretary

Stephen Jackson hath title to the within described tract of Land.
Drury P. Armstrong
Regist of E., T

8th Nov 1824 Recorded in my office
I do hereby certify that the within Grant was duly registered. Drury P. Armstrong, Regst of E T (Estates & Trusts?)
Book D page 183 with the certificate there to annexed in the registers office for Carter County at Elizabethton Aug ..
B. Brewer Rgst (Registrar)

Note that one of the property lines is described as "Jackson's old line" indicating that it butts up to property already or formerly owned by a Jackson. This could well be property formerly owned by his father William Jackson which passed by William's Will to his wife Bathsheba. Later in 1823, Stephen also purchased another 10 acres in Carter County.
==========================================================================
Stephen's father William rec'd a deed for 200 acres in Washington County (now Carter County) in 1794. In 1801 William deeded 100 of these acres to Leonard Shoun. And in 1819 book C pg 242, 243 Stephen Jackson witnessed deed Leonard Shown to Leonard's eldest son, John Shoun, the same 100A Leonard received from William Jackson (Grant #1123).

Hannah Unknown-23240

It is possible that the 'story' on the cited source for Hannah is not really the wife of Stephen, s/o William. But lacking any further information, this is the best assumption I have. This needs more research!!

1390. Son1 (possibly George) Jackson-10045

1870 Census District 7, Johnson Co., TN
Low, William H. 29 M W Farmer TN
Low, Sarah C. 27 F W keeping house TN
Low, James C. 7 M W TN
Low, Jacob H. 3 M W TN
Low, Noah ?. 1 M W TN
Jackson, George 58 M W TN (b abt 1812)

I have not determined just who this George Jackson is, but he is the right age to have been this eldest son of Stephen as recorded in the 1830 census: a son born between 1811 and 1815.

745. David Jackson-8516

Darrell Jackson's research: "David had only one wife and her name was Sarah Low as recorded on the Marriage license, certificate and Wedding Bond that is on file in Carter Co., TN. Prior to my finding these marriage documents, it was believed that David Jackson's first wife was a LONG and his second wife was Sarah whose surname was not known. . . The theory that his first wife was named 'Long' came from the only mention of that name and that was in a handwritten letter from William Ross Jackson in 1932 in which he states that his father's mother was a LONG. I believe that the name LOW, handwritten, was misread as LONG. Once this happened, the name was perpetuated as LONG."

Darrell: "David was born about 1790. Campbell Co. Census records show that in:
1830 he was between 30 & 40 years old and his wife was between 20 & 30.
1840 he was between 40 & 50 years old and his wife was between 30 & 40.
1850 he should have been 50-60 and his wife 40-50. But the census says that he was 70. Her age was 46 which was right and would have been between 40-50 under the old system. In the 3 census records she would have been 26, 36 and 46 - which she was. If he was 40, 50 and 60 in the 3 census his birth date would have been 1790 and only 14 not 24 years older than his wife. The explanation for his age being wrong (70 years old) in the 1850 census could be attributed to David giving the wrong age, the census taker writing it down wrong or adults not being home when the census taker came by and accepted answers from one of the kids. Census records are famous for inaccurate birth dates."

"David is said to have operated one of the first forges in East Tennessee and that he did this on a 'self made forge' in Big Creek Gap. The town of Lafollette was known as Big Creek Gap prior to 1897."

"It is known that David was in Campbell County by 1830 based on the census records. David is not listed as owning land in Carter County, but on 24 April 1824 he along with 3 other citizens of Carter County proved (witnessed?) a land sale in Carter County."

1405. George Jackson-10096

Darrell Jackson's notes on George: "In the 1850 Campbell Co., TN census he is listed as 5 years old.
Was living with his brother William at the time of the 1860 Morgan County Census, dated June 14, 1860. He was listed as 14 years old. They were living in Crooked Fork, TN. Have not found him after the 1860 census."

1406. Sarah Jackson-10097

The Daughters of David Jackson and his two wives
by Darrell H. Jackson

This mystery is common to all researchers of female ancestors. Through the early part of this century it seems that once they left daddy's home, women disappeared into the void of records maintained in their husbands name.

I could write a book about what I don't know about these women. All four were born and lived in Campbell County, Tennessee. I have not been able to find their descendents or other researchers. Because of this I feel that I have a psychic connection to them. Feeling them, almost hearing them. Demanding that we dig them up, get them out into the light and exposure of todays interest in genealogy. They want their story told.

My hope is that someone out there will recognize one of these women as their Great Grandmother, Aunt or something and will share their story with the rest of this family.

What I (Darrell) have learned about these four daughters of David Jackson is detailed on my website: http://www.tngenweb.org/campbell/family/djack.html.
Janie: Do see the website for much more detail.

Some notes from Darrell Jackson: "Sarah was probably named after her mother, Sarah Low. In the 1850 Campbell Co., TN census she is listed as 1 yr old.

"She is listed in the 1860 Jacksboro, Campbell Co, TN census at 15 years old and being an 'inmate' in the household of Franklin Mowl 27, his wife Louisa 22 and daughter Uriah 3 months. All born in TN. Sarah's age is either in error or purposely misrepresented. Her age is actually 11 yrs old. See next entry, which is 10 yrs later.

"She is listed in the 1870 Jacksboro, Campbell co, TN census as being 21 years old and a House Keeper in the household of a Eliza Moul, 32 and no husband but 5 children, Eura 10, George 8, James 4, John 2 and Kate 1. All born in TN. (Janie: there is no mention of these children 10 years later in the 1880 census.)

"Sarah Jackson married William Day on 5 Mar 1871 in Campbell Co, TN. This is listed in Book A of the county Marriage Book. I (Darrell) viewed this book during my visit in July 2000. . ."

1880 Census Dist 105, Dist 4, Claiborne Co., Tennessee
Day, William White Male 35 abt 1845 Head Married TN TN TN
Day, Sarah White Female 30 abt 1850 Wife Married TN TN TN
Day, Thursey White Female 5 abt 1875 Dau Single TN TN TN
Day, Ollie White Female 3 abt 1877 Dau Single TN TN TN
Day, Robert White Male 1 abt 1879 Son Single TN TN TN

By 1900 census, this Sarah is left a widow with 11 children and 1 grandchild! It still is not proved that this Sarah is the same Sarah as dau of David Jackson and Sarah Low but it is a good assumption. David's dau Sarah m Wm Day in Campbell County, Tenn in 1871. My concern that this couple might not be my Sarah is 1) they are not in Campbell County and that in 1900 Sarah says her birthday is Dec 1854. I don't know how positive Darrell's birthdate of 1849 is; he says about . . .?

In 1900 Thursey is listed as Clersy, Ollie is missing and it is impossible to tell who is the mother of 4 year old granddau, Ellie Day. Sarah says she has had 13 children and only 12 are living. Is the deceased child Ollie or some other child? Ollie is old enough to have married and left the hh.

746. Catherine (Kate or Katy) Jackson-8517

From the book Heatherlys and Related Families, page 16: 'In the 1860 Campbell County Census, Catherine Heatherly stated that she was born in Pennsylvania. Then in 1870 when she was living with her youngest son, George and wife, Demeris Siler Heatherly, Catherine, or whoever talked to the Census taker, stated that she was born in Connecticut of foreign parents. This indicated that Katy in her busy frontier life on Powell River was keeping up with changes in state boundaries.'

I don't really know about that, but this contradictory info does put some doubt in my mind about Catherine. The researchers that the author of the Heatherly book quoted, and the author herself, were convinced that Catherine was the daughter of William of Carter County, TN. There were few or NO other Jackson lines in Carter County at that time that I know of, so it does appear likely that she is William's daughter. Her bondsman when she married in 1816 was David Stout, her father having died in 1810. So far, I have not found the connection between David Stout and Catherine. This author, though she definetly states Catherine is daughter of William born in Morris County, yet has his birthdate wrong. So there is much doubt in my mind (Janie) about this Catherine.

William Jackson's will written in 1806 mentions only 4 of his sons (out of 26 children!) and then says 'all my other children'. So his will is no help with daughters and the court house has no settlement records for this time period.

'Katie' herself appears to have been a remarkable woman. She and her husband moved from Carter County to pioneer in Campbell County, Tennessee about 1820. "She learned the skills of a midwife and rode horseback for miles to care for both white and black mothers and babies. Her son George was single and still living in the family home at the time of his enlistment in the Union Army. His father had died and George left Catherine in the care of Uncle Tom and Aunt Emma, slaves, at the family home. After his return, he gave them a home and farm at what is today (1978) Beard Training Center. When the Civil War ended, Uncle Tom and Emma and their little family took the name of Heatherly and did not want to leave. Catherine died 21 Feb 1876 at the home of her son, George W. and Demeris Siler Heatherly, Craig Ford, Campbell Co., TN. Their home, sold to TVA in the 1930s, had sheltered four generations of Heatherlys."

For more info on their life, see the Notes for her husband, William Heatherly.

William Heatherly Sr.-9140

Heatherly book, pg 13: "William was born in the Southwest Territory two years before Tennessee was a state and must have journed with them down the Powell or by horseback from upper East Tennessee."

Heatherly book, pg 14: "Carter County, Tennessee records: Hetherly, William to Catherine Jackson married June 6, 1816. William and Catherine's Family Bible omits Catherine's maiden name; however, the date of marriage is the same as the published Carter County record. . .
"William and Catherine Jackson Heatherly with his parents, John and Nancy Wilson Heatherly, left Carter County, Tennessee, about 1820 for Campbell County, Tennessee. Several other families, including a younger brother of John, Hugh Heatherly (born between 1770-1780) came with them.

"Sistler's "List of Early East Tennessee Taxpayers": William and John Heatherly are both listed as taxpayers in 1823 in Campbell County, Tennessee. The 1830 Campbell County, Tennessee Census Record for William Heatherly checks by years with William and Catherine's children's ages. (from Family Bible Ledger)"

Heatherly book, pg 15: "William, Sr. and Catherine Heatherly were Baptist. They would travel for miles on horseback to attend church services. Reference were made in booklets of the Campbell County Baptist Association of early attendance of the Heatherlys in early pioneer churches near Davis Creek in Powell Valley and along the Powell River. They may have canoed at times to church. One person stated several years ago that they had gone from their home at Craig Ford to Old Indian Creek with son, Alexander, and daughter, Mary.

William's home sold to T.V.A. in the 1930's by a grandson, Harrison H. Heatherly, was built of native logs and stone before the Civil War. It sheltered at least five generations of Heatherlys and Heatherly slaves. Their grandchildren have told us that Aunt Emma and Uncle Tom lived with Catherine Heatherly after William's death until her youngest son returned home from service as a Corporal with the Union Army."

From webmaster: this sounds a bit strange to me as this family were slave owners. Not only owners but page 15 says: "A grandson of William and Catherine told us that William, Sr., and sons Andrew, John and George W. bought and sold over five-hundred salves before the Civil War. We understand that he traveled to Charleston, S.C. and New Orleans to make purchases. We have tried to find records of sales, but have not been successful." But a grandson fought on the Union side???

Page 15 continues: "William Heatherly, Sr. died July 16, 1863. (William Heatherly Family Bible) He was carried by Black Heatherlys to Powell River Church Cemetery or Cedar Creek Bridge Cemetery for burial. TVA records list his death date as 1869, the date recorded on his old monument at Powell River. When he was reinterred with Catherine at Baker Forge Memorial, his grandson, a Heatherly Family Historian and Genealogist purchased a double white monument with his date of death corrected."

During the civil war, while William was gone, he left Catherine in the care of blacks. After the civil war, the family blacks took Heatherly as their last name.

William was unmarried. His date of death is taken from his parent's Family Bible per Nadine Heatherly Stephens, author of the book.

751. Joseph Tompkins-1758

1794 From Goodspeed's History of Johnson County: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnjohnso/jcchurch.html>
“The first church organized in the county was known as Roane Creek Baptist Church, constituted on April 20, 1794. Benjamin Brown was chosen moderator, William Jackson clerk and George Brown elder. At the next meeting in May George Brown, Stephen Wheeler, Benjamin Brown, Joseph Gentry, John Grimes, John Asher and William Jackson were also appointed to sit, as the church, at Mr. Loyd's, to receive members, on the second Saturday in June. Among the first members mentioned were Benjamin Cuthbert, Reuben and John Asher, Jacob Perkins, John and William Brown, Stephen Gentry, Joseph Tompkins . . .

There is a Washington County deed dated 12 July 1794 recorded in the Carter County court house in 1796 for 200 acres given to William Jackson, Washington County (now Carter County), North Carolina. Book A, pgs 15, 16.
Then in 1801 William deeded 100 of these acres to Leonard Shown. This second deed is Witnessed by JOSEPH TOMPKINS and WILLIAM JINKINS. This second deed is significant in light of the comments made in the 1887 Jackson Ledger (pg 12) about Joseph Jackson's son, William, and Joseph's daughter, Elizabeth Jackson TOMPKINS, migrating South together. Here in this deed we have William Jackson, Joseph Tompkins and Wm. Jinkins/Jenkins all together. Joseph Tompkins may have been William's nephew and William Jinkins' son-in-law.

1804 Carter Count, TN Deed Book A, pg 490-491 Deed dated 11 Aug 1804 William Tompkins to Reuben Thornton was witnessed by James Tompkins, Joseph Tompkins and Mary M. Tompkins.

Overton County was originally a part of Davidson County and later Jackson County. On September 12, 1806, the area of Overton County was established by the state legislature as a county. Livingston, did not become incorporated until 1907.

Eileen A. Averill has that Joseph was born in TN; Melvin Morris has that he was born in NC.

Notes from Eileen A. Averill: "Joseph and Mary joined the Clear Fork United Baptist Church in March 1821.
They became members of the Wolk River United Baptist Church (from Church Records, minutes for 5 May 1821 meeting).
Joseph served as a magistrate with Rowland in Carter Co., TN about 1801. Later, Mary and Joseph moved their family to Overton Co., TN. They both died there."
