11142. George Taylor Atkins-5462
Note from Patricia Prickett Hickin: "When George was two years old his parents moved the family to Texas and he grew up in Houston, became an Eagle Scout, developed an early enthusiasm for journalism and an avid admirer of all things Texan, went into the advertising business, and prospered. He lived most of his working life in Austin, and died there before his 61st birthday in Austin, Texas."
11144. Guilford McConnell Atkins-5466
PPH: Guilford worked for the US Postal Service for many years. He died at the age of 82, the only one of George and Gladese's 4 sons to live beyond his late 60s.
11145. James R. Atkins-5469

I thought this 1900 census below might not be the right Wm. S and Pauline family; but noted it here just for reference. I note the 1900 Wm. S. says he is from TN and the 1910 William S says he is from Virginia; which is the William S. Miller that married Pauline Prickett. There are NOT nine months between the child Ralph and the child Bessie based on records of Patricia Prickett Hickin. But Mrs. Hickin tells me that this 1900 Census record is the correct family and that Pauline and William did indeed have a son named Ralph who died very young.

11147. Bessie Belle Miller-5491
Note from Patricia Prickett Hickin: "Bessie was only twelve years old at the time of her father's death in 1912 and her mother's move home to live with her children in the Prickett homeplace in Rural Retreat. Her mother was determined to see that the children were professionally educated and there was barely enough money (and that thanks to her uncle Jamie's generosity) to clothe and feed them. Her youngest brother was born within a few months and Bessie spent many of her high school hours in enterprising ways to make a few pennies here and there. She developed a natural gift for sewing and salesmanship and with the aid of a well-to-do woman in Rural Retreat who recognized the talents of her talented neighbors, she went off to Radford and Farmville normal schools, majored in Domestic Science, and taught what became Home Economics, primarily in Dinwiddie County, south of Rcidhmond, VA. She received her degree several summers after she began teaching. Although she often had multiple boyfriends she did not find one who met her fancy until she met the county farm agent, a fellow Southwest Virginian."
11148. Harold Lee Miller-5494
Note from Patricia Prickett Hickin: "Not yet ten years old when his father died, Harold grew up in Rural Retreat and went off to the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, where he worked his way through college, by any honorable means he could find, among them spending long hours plucking chickens in the College's kitchen. He left after finishing all his accounting courses but before obtaining a degree. While still a student, he talked the college president into accepting his younger sister Gladys as a student despite her lack of financial means. He drew quite well and I believe even considered becoming a professional cartoonist. Soon after leaving college he joined his uncle Minter Jackson Prickett in Bluefield, Mercer County, WV, and worked for him briefly in the insurance business. He soon joined a local Bluefield firm and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Treasurer of the company. He enjoyed public speaking, took a toastmaster's course, and became a popular speaker for civic organizations."
PPH: Bernice was killed in a highway accident.
11149. Gladys Willie Miller-5497
She was unmarried.
11150. Shirley Rosmore Miller-5498
Shirley was unmarried. Spelling of her middle name from family bible.
From Patricia Prickett Hickin: "Adelaide was cremated in Richmond, Virginia and the ashes were later taken to her hometown in Pennsylvania and inurned in the Newell family plot near Towanda."
8480. Minter Jackson Prickett Jr.-5505
PPH: "Minter Jackson Prickett was a twin, but his brother Abram died at birth. Minter said the doctor almost gave up on him too but gave him one last whack - - and he cried. Actually he told 2 different stories. So many tales I remember so fondly. Minter knew how to be a good and fun father, as did his father, and I think his father before him. Obviously in the genes, as Minter Jackson Prickett, Sr. wasn't around long enough afterward to be a role model!"
