7360. Oscar Barton Jackson-15559
Copied from page 48 of Linda Jackson Garner's book:
"Oscar and Helen (Ballard) Jackson were married during the time of the (Great) Depression. Times were hard all over. They moved around a good deal in order for him to get work. . . The family moved to Cross City, Florida in 1937, where he found employment at Shamrock Lumber Company. Later, in 1941, they moved to his hometown of May, Florida, where he was employed as a dry goods salesman. In 1943, they moved to Auburndale, Florida (about 25 miles from the home of Helen's parents). During this time, World War II had been declared. Oscar was not called into service until 1944, due to the fact that he had a wife and four small children.
"Oscar enlisted 14 September 1944 at Camp Blanding, Bradford County, Florida, in the Army Air Corp, 935th Engr. Avn. Regt. as a General Carpenter. He served stateside until 17 April 1945, when he departed for action in the Pacific Theater. One such battle was that of Ryukus Islands (Okinawa). Oscar received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and The Bronze Battle Star. He was discharged 9 Oct 1945."

Linda's brother has sent me pages from her privately published book, "Our Jackson Family: Descendants of Jesse & Delilah Jackson" (first published and copyrighted 1982 and revised in 1998). The following is the introduction she placed in her book:
This book is about my Great Grandfather, John Kirby Jackson and his family.Nearly twenty years ago, I was handed a piece of paper with my Great Grandfather's family written on it. Nothing else. Right then I realized how little I actually knew about my ancestors. I was hooked! I was determined to find out everything I could about them.
My Grandmother died before I was born and my Grandfather died when I was very young. Most of the older generations, as well as my Father, had passed away before I became interested in genealogy. I had to dig way down in the memories of my childhood to get started. It was like putting a giant jig-saw puzzle together. I would find a piece here, another piece there and then sometimes the pieces wouldn't fit.
My Great Grandfather, John Kirby Jackson, was born in North Carolina. His parents moved to Montgomery Co., Alabama when he was young. There were twelve children in his family, eight brothers and three sisters. They all settled in Montgomery County. John Kirby Jackson, three of his brothers and his brothers-in-law served in the Civil War. After the Civil War, for some reason, the family split-up. Some say they had a big falling out, others say they just wanted to find a better life. For whatever reason, John Kirby Jackson and his brother Jesse L., went to Florida. Their brothers Andrew and Frank went to Texas. Their brother Benjamin went to Coffee Co., Alabama and their sister, Sarah Curry, went to Missouri. The ones who were left stayed around their parents.
Needless to say, as the older generation died out the younger ones had no idea that they had relatives anywhere else. We only heard vague things about them, such as, they came from Alabama, or, thirty years ago my uncle got a letter from Texas, I think we have kin there. It has taken me many years of searching through dusty Courthouse basements, Archives, cemeteries and personal visits to relatives and places where my ancestors lived, not to mention tons of letters written to get the information that I now have. You haven't lived, until you go to a cemetery, in 27 degree weather, with sleet coming down, and it is so far off the beaten path, that the animals won't even go there. I have enjoyed every minute of the search. It is by no means finished. There are still a lot of missing pieces in my puzzle.
