6601. Clarac Alma Johnson-10972

On January 21,1895 Clarac Alma married George Woodland in Marlin, TX. George and Clarac were married in his home on the southeast corner of Walker and Houghton Streets by Rev. J. F. McLean, a Baptist minister of Reagan and Blue Ridge. They lived there for five years until Clarac told George not to come home if he could not find a better place to live. George walked down around the corner and located a house at 525 Gift Street and Woodland Alley, purchasing the front three-fourth acre lot in 1900, and the back three-fourth acre lot in 1917. They built a carriage barn, planted an orchard, pecan trees, gardens, and a berry patch. They had a well and a cistern, a workshop, storeroom, and smokehouse, and had a guest house in the back. George had blue eyes and dark hair which never turned gray. He was interested in political and local affairs, always voting until his death. He was a cotton and corn farmer, and a ginner --- working at that trade while in California for three years. In 1916 he bought 117 acres south of Marlin and ran the Live Oak Dairy for many years. In 1928, George and Orr A. Edwards, son of Margie (Dillard) Edwards, was a Jackson cousin of Clarac, bought two sections of land at Encinal, Texas. "Yad" subsequently sold out to George, and the land remained in the family until 1968 when his daughter sold it.
George and Clarac Woodland had only one child. Alma Clarac Woodland who married Kit Carson Pratt.
George was a Farmer, Stockman & Ginner.

Kit Carson Pratt, b. ca. 1910, was the son of Henry Thompson Pratt, b.Smythe County, Virginia, and his wife, Martha Carson, of Grayson County,Virginia. He was married on September 3, 1932 in Marlin, Texas to Clarac Alma Woodland (called Alma). She died December 7, 1975 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin. She was a daughter of George and Clarac Alma (Johnson) Woodland.
Kit came to Falls County, Texas where his Uncle Oliver Pratt had settled on a ranch near the Woodland homestead. He and Alma had one child, Alma Lavonne Pratt born October 10, 1935 -- just eighteen months before Kit was accidentally killed by a horse.
Alma managed the family estate after Kit's death -- including the Marlin, Hog Island, and Encinal property (bought by her grandparents), until her death . She married second to Harold Waldemar Swenson, b. 1901, and d. 1966, who was from Austin, Texas and was in the oil leasing business.

Erle Stewart Jackson, 69, assistant construction superintendent for the Fresno Irrigation District, died yesterday in his home at Route 9, Box 605, Nielson and Marks Avenues. Death was attributed to heart disease.
A resident of this community for the last 57 years, Jackson had been employed by the district for 40 years. He was born in Texas. He was a long time member of the Clovis Grange.

HUGH ROBERT JACKSON
Hugh Robert Jackson, 69, a government vineyard experimental worker, died in his home at 260 Echo Avenue yesterday following an illness of one year. He had been suffering from heart disease.
Mr. Jackson was a member of the Christian Church and the Clovis Grange.He is survived by his widow, Bessie; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Bivings of Fresno, Mrs. Irene Ralls of Sacramento and Mrs. Harriet Reynolds of Begerndorf, Germany: a sister, Mrs. Maggie M. Curtis of Clovis; a brother, J. J. Jackson of Sanger; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of Yost & Webb Saturday at 10 AM.
Hugh Robert Jackson son of C. W. and Nancy Caroline Cobb Jackson first opened his eyes on October 27,1881, in Falls Co. Texas. His parents moved when he was still a small child to Bell Co. Texas. Here Hugh commenced his education attending Cockle Burr School, when it was in session. At the age of eleven years, Hugh came with his father, mother, sisters and brothers to Calif. Then for many years was in West Park Colony near Fresno. Here he went through grammar school and then attended Healds Business College. Hugh was a gifted with a quick mind and did not especially like to farm, so after one year of working on ar ented farm, he started working for Kunter Goldstiens, a large mercantile house in Fresno. During this time he married Bessie May Rose, a former resident of West Park Colony, on July 25, 1906, but then of Fresno, City. He then moved back to the country, working for Mr. D. M. Barnwell of West Park, until the Spring of 1907. He went to Coalinga, where he lived until 1916, being road master in Coalinga District, for a number of years. He spent 8 years at Lindsey among the orange groves being superintendent of a large grove of them. Mr. Jackson moved his family back to Fresno, working at various jobs until 1919, he commemced working for the Fresno Canal and Irrigation and has continued doing so up until this writing. He is head ditch tender in the district around Kerman where he resides. Mr. Jackson has a large rabbitry. He is very interesting talking and a qucik thinker and great reader. He was a member of the National Guard in Fresno 1903 to Feb. 1906, but saw no actual duty.

Bessie M. Rose the daughter of James and Cora (Brooks) Rose, was born on the Stearn's place in West Park Colony, near Fresno, Calif. on August 3,1888. She is the sister of Judson Rose. She went to Perrin Colony School, then to West Park, lived on the Bruce Place. Later her parents moved to Fresno living on Raisina St. where she married Hugh Jackson, son of C. W. and Nancy(Cobb) Jackson native of Ala. July 25, 1906. They lived for a short while in her mother's home, then to West Park. In the spring of 1907 they moved to Coalinga, where they lived until 1916. Her next home was among the orange groves of Lindsey. living there 8 years. Again her home was in Fresno for a number of years. She with her family at present reside near Kerman. Mrs. Jackson is employed in the grocery store at Kerman. She is a splendid cook and likes to do dressmaking.

MRS. BESSIE JACKSONMrs. Bessie May Jackson, 73, of 260 Echo Avenue died last night in a local hospital following a long illness,. She was a lifelong resident of Fresno County.
Mrs. Jackson was born in the West Park Colony west of Fresno. She attended the West Park School. She was a member of the Degree of Honor and the Clovis Grange.
Her parents, W. J. Rose and Mrs. Cora Brooks Rose, came to Fresno when youngsters. Mrs Jackson's husband, Hugh Robert, was a water superintendent for the Fresno Irrigation District for 25 years.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by three daughters; Mrs. Harriett Reynolds, and Mrs. Mary Bivings of Fresno and Mrs. Irene Rails of Sacramento, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The services will be conducted at 10 AM Monday in the Stephens Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Belmont Memorial Park.

EDGAR LEE CURTIS, 75, of 3528 Illinois Avenue, a retired rancher, died today in a local hospital where he was under treatment for influenza, complicated by heart disease.
Curtis was a native of Dansville, Mich., and came to Fresno in 1888 from South Dakota. At various times before his retirement about 10 years ago, he ranched in the Selma district, Kutner Colony and the Kerman district.
He is survived by a son, Walter Lee Curtis of Honolulu; a daughter, Mrs. Ida May Harlan of Mesquite, Tex., five grandchildren and a brother, Stephen H. Curtis of the Clovis area.
The Yost & Webb Mortuary will announce the arrangements for the funeral services.

Stephen Hiram Curtis, 86, died last night in a Fresno hospital following an illness of about a week.
Curtis was born in Michigan and had been in Fresno since about 1885. He had worked as a ditch tender for the Fresno Irrigation District for 35 years when he retired in 1952.
He lived since January 1st in a rest home at 820 Mildreda Avenue. He formerly resided at 4578 North DeWolf Avenue, Clovis.
He is survived by his widow, Maggie M. (Jackson); two sons, Emery F. Curtis of Van Nuys, Los Angeles County, and Leonard W. Curtis of Elko, Nev.; six daughters, Mrs. Barbara McIntosh and Mrs. Jane Weber of Fresno, Mrs. Helen Trower and Mrs. Evelyn Cunningham of North Fork, Madera County, Mrs. Myrtle Thompson of Sanger and Mrs. Doris Keller of Honolulu, Hawaii. Seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.
The services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chaple of the Boice Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Redbanks Cemetery.
Lola was a member of the Catholic Church.

The car kept rolling until it went into a shallow gulley and stopped.He was born in Texas and had lived in the Sanger area 71 years. He was agate tender for the Fresno Irrigation Canal.
He is survived by his widow, Tressie; his daughters, Mrs. Rowena Malcolm of San Francisco and Mrs. Delpha Wilson of Sanger; a sister Mrs. Margaret Curtis of Clovis and four grandchildren. Burial will be in the Sanger Cemetery under the direction of the Creager Chapel.
