Hardin, Janetta B F 19 cookThe following notes are by Patricia Prickett Hickin (see sources below): 'Mint' was working in one of Minter Jackson's stores in Virginia at 17 years of age when his father, Wm. B. F. Prickett died. He didn't attempt to go home for the funeral, but his mother and sister 'Nellie' kept him informed of his father’s health. They also spoke frequently of reading everything they could get their hands on–no easy matter in the back hills of Greenbrier Co. Mint himself longed to go to college for at least a year, but could see no way to manage it financially.
"Minter Jackson was Minter Jackson Prickett's uncle, brother of his mother and Mint was named for this uncle. Minter Jackson and Mint were very different in temperament, with the older man being serious, thrifty, hardworking and financially astute, whereas his nephew was inclined to be academic and fun-loving to the end of his life. Mint was also a patient and openly loving father though perhaps somewhat inclined to live a bit beyond his means.
"By mid-1881 Mint had moved to Rural Retreat to operate one of his Uncle Minter Jackson's stores. He later entered into partnership with his uncle, shared the profits and still later agreed to buy the store with a large loan from Minter Jackson. About 1890 his younger brother, James Tennyson Prickett, joined him and the two brothers formed a partnership.
"Mint, who had respiratory problems from an early age, contracted pneumonia when he was 38 years old and died 8 months after Minter Jr. was born, leaving his young (37 year old) widow and family traumatized. At the time of his death Mint was still in debt to his uncle, who apparently did not expect to be repaid. It is possible that James Tennyson eventually paid off the loan, or a portion of it, to their uncle.
"In their short 16 1/2 years of marriage, Laura Bell had borne 11 children, four of whom died in infancy: virtually all the rest lived to their 80th year and beyond. Her children and subsequent generations ordinarily spelled her middle name as 'Belle'.
"Minter resided in Blue Sulphur Spring, Greenbrier Co.WV; Smyth County,VA; Abingdon, Washington Co., VA, and for the last fifteen years of his life in Rural Retreat, Wythe Co.,VA.

PPH: "In their short 16 1/2 years of marriage, Laura Bell had borne 11 children, four of whom died in infancy: virtually all the rest lived to their 80th year and beyond. Her children and subsequent generations ordinarily spelled her middle name as 'Belle.' Laura Bell's mother was the younger sister of Isabella Holt Beatie, Minter Jackson’s second wife."
8373. James McChesney Prickett-214
Notes from Patricia Prickett Hickin:
"By 1901 James had left home and was residing near or with McConnell relatives in Nashville, TN. He moved to Washington, DC, prior to WW I. A manufacturer’s representative/traveling salesman for hardware and jewelry firms, he later made his headquarters in Roanoke, VA."The Jackson Ledger gives his middle name as Minter, but he and his family members know his middle name as McChesney. He was unmarried.
"He was named James Minter and called "Jamie". Twelve years later a younger brother, (my father) arrived and was named Minter Jackson Prickett and called "Minter". Uncle Jamie didn't like sharing the name and at some point had his middle name officially changed to McChesney. I imagine that he would have used "McConnell" but the twin that died had been given that name, so he chose the name 'McChesney' so he could keep the same middle initial. His grandfather Thomas Guilford McConnell was the son of Susan Berry McChesney, who had married Abram McConnell, Jr.
"Uncle Jamie loved to write–both poems and essays. So far as I know in all his published work he used the middle name McChesney. It was always my understanding that he had his name changed legally – I imagine that he did so as soon as he was of age.
"In addition to almost daily poems which appeared in one or more Tennessee newspapers for some years before WW II, he self-published one book of poems (A Bit O’ Sunshine [1928]) and several booklets including Travelgrams . . . . [1943] and I Review My Yesteryears.... [1960]). Sometimes his poems – and prose– drip with sentimentality and at times he is quite moving, especially when describing his childhood experiences.

Contributed by Patricia Prickett Hickin: Quoted from James McChesney Prickett, I Review My Yesteryears . . . . Roanoke, VA: Self-published, printed by Art Printing Co., c1960:
"Over a long span of years I have known many of the fair sex who have expressed themselves in those soft, dulcet musical tones with the Southern accent. Lassies in their teens, young ladies, matrons, and those who had become quite elderly. I would naturally consider my Mother as possessing the foremost of all these qualities. Her gift along this line made her conversation lovely, but she was also a very accomplished singer. The old piano in our home has known the soft touch of her fingers, when a young lassie, [and] until she was [a] grandmother, her sweet voice vibrat[ed] throughout the walls of her girlhood home, then later on, our own--down through the years.
"I would place "Aunt Nellie," my father's sister, the next to be listed among the most pleasing to entrance her listeners in conversation. She lived in our home until I was nine years of age, and in many ways meant almost as much to us children as our own Mother."
William Jackson Fickle Sr.-424
From family notes of Patricia Prickett Hickin: "Will Fickle and Nellie Prickett married at the Prickett residence in Rural Retreat and moved to Abingdon where Will was in the hardware business.
"Will's daughter Eleanor and her husband and children lived with Will and Nellier for several years. His granddaughter says that Grandfather Fickle was an ardent Presbyterian, an elder of Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol for 45 years and she remembers he always read a Psalm aloud to the family at the table before breakfast.
"Despite his middle name, Will Fickle was not a Jackson descendant. His father, who had served with 'Stonewall' Jackson in the Civil War, was a great admirer of 'Stonewall’ and named Will in his honor. SOURCE: Mrs. Hickin's tele converstion with J. Williams, 26 Feb 2006."
