A burglar who helped himself to an elderly Warren County couple's silverware left a shoe behind.

State police were called to a residence on Old Pittsfield Road in Pittsfield Township at 4:30 a.m. Saturday after the owners reported being robbed.

Someone entered the home of Roderic and Marjorie Jackson by forcing open the kitchen door, Trooper Daniel C. Moore said. Once inside, the burglar rummaged through the couple's dining room china cabinet.

Moore said the burglar was apparently startled by Roderic Jackson and ran out of the house with a cabinet drawer containing silverware and a hearing aid battery charger. The burglar left his right shoe behind in the driveway the trooper said. The shoe was a brown leather Stanford size 10 with the words earth shoe stamped in the tongue and printed inside the shoe...”

Based on the fact that Pittsfield is close to Youngsville, Warren County, Pennsylvania, I would assume that this is Roderic A. Jackson, but I have no other proof. But the following funeral notice posted in the Warren Times-Observer confirms the address.

RODERIC JACKSON 3/13/2007 - Mr. Roderic A. Jackson, 85, of RD 2 Box 356 (Old Pittsfield Road), Pittsfield, Pa.

4460. Alice Jackson-18612

The following contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha, Ph.D.:
Alice Jackson married Frederick D. Backus, son of Ascan Backus, on Wednesday, November 10, 1875 [Ascan Backus, a German immigrant, was a wealthy farmer and landowner in Newtown, Queens, NY]. Although they had many happy years together and the couple was blessed with two children [a daughter, Wilhelmina, and a son, Ascan], Alice’s life ended tragically, dying from injuries sustained in a major fire. The family enjoyed vacations in the Catskill Mountains, especially in Twilight Park, a resort community [it is now a National Historic District, under the care of the National Park Service] in Haines Falls, Greene County, NY, as seen in the following blurb:
The Newtown Register, Saturday, September 6, 1924, Page 4, Column 2: [In the “Forest Hills” column]
“—Mrs. Frederick Backus, Miss Minnie [i.e. Wilhelmina] Backus and Mr. Ascan Backus have returned home from a vacation at Twilight Park, Catskills Mts.”

Sadly, a subsequent visit turned tragic. Early on the morning of Wednesday, July 14, 1926, a fire broke out in the Twilight Inn at Haines Falls, which proved to be the worst catastrophe Greene County has ever experienced, resulting in the death of twenty-two people; fourteen of the bodies were never identified and those souls were laid to rest in a mass grave located near the Methodist Episcopal Church. As sundry newspaper articles at the time attest, Mrs. Frederick D. Backus and her son, Ascan, were guests in the hotel that fateful night. They occupied a room on the second floor, and the only stairway was blocked by flames [unlike today, fire escapes were unfortunately not mandated by local codes at the time], which meant that the only egress from the blaze was through the windows, so numerous guests leapt from the upper floor, including Alice and her son. Both of them were burned and received cuts from going out the window, but Alice landed on a hard surface, resulting in a fractured elbow and a possibly fractured skull. She died two days later from complications at Red Cross Hospital in nearby Tannersville, NY. Ascan Backus apparently recovered from his injuries.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sunday, July 18, 1926, Page 16 A, Column 1:
“BACKUS—Suddenly, at Tannersville, N. Y., on July 16, 1926, ALICE JACKSON BACKUS, beloved wife of Frederick D. and loving mother of Ascan and Wilhelmina Backus. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services at the home, Queens blvd. and Kelvin st., Forest Hills, L. I., on Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock.”

The Newtown Register, Saturday, July 24, 1926, Page 5, Columns 3 and 4:
Alice J. Backus
Funeral services for Mrs. Alice J. Backus, wife of Frederick Backus, were held at the home on Queens boulevard and Kelvin street last Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock.
Services were conducted by Dr. Clearwater, for many years pastor of The Dutch Reformed Church of Elmhurst of which the Backus family were all members.
Lead Kindly Light, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, and Thy Will be Done were sung during services.
A large number of friends and relatives were present at the service. Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Backus died from results of injuries received in the Twilight Inn Fire, where she and her son were spending a vacation.
Both Mrs. Backus and her son were awakened by smoke in their rooms and they jumped from their rooms on [the] second floor of [the] Hotel. Mrs. Backus fell backwards on [sic: upon] reaching [the] ground, and her head struck a stone walk. She was also badly burned on her body and received internal injuries. She was taken to Red Cross Hospital at Tannersville, N. Y., where later pneumonia developed.
Mr. Ascan Backus, who was with his mother, received cuts and bruises and [a] hurt arm, but was able to come home.
Mrs. Backus is survived by her husband, and one daughter and [a] son.”

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services Wednesday, 2:30 o’clock, at his residence, Queens Blvd., corner of 69th Rd., Forest Hills, L. I. Interment family plot, Maple Grove Cemetery.”

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Monday, February 15, 1937, Page 11, Column 6:
“Frederick Backus, Queens Realtor, Dies in 87th Year.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday for Frederick D. Backus, former president of the Cord Meyer Development Co. and a director of Long Island Bond and Mortgage Co., who died at the age of 87 in his spacious residence at Queens Boulevard and 69th Road, Forest Hills.
The service for Mr. Backus, who was a member of one of Long Islan’s [sic: Island’s] oldest families, will be conducted in his home at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. C. Lawson Willard Jr., rector of St. James’ P.E. Church, Elmhurst. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Backus was born in the old Backus homestead on Queens Boulevard, only a stone’s throw from the mansion he occupied when he died. His father, Ascan Backus, owned a farm which embraced almost all the territory now covered by the Forest Hills development, which was started in 1897. He was one of the wealthiest residents of Long Island in the early days.

Rose to Head of Firm
Frederick Backus retired as manager of the farm to join the late Cord Meyer in the development project, rising to the position of head of the concern. The company hnored [sic: honored] his father’s memory by naming one of the most important thoroughfares in Forest Hills “Ascan Ave.”
More than half a century ago the younger Backus married Miss Alice Jackson, descendant of a famous Queens County family whose farm adjoined the Backus farm. She was fatally burned in a fire at Twilight Park, N. Y., in 1926. Surviving Mr. Backus are a daughter, Wilhelmina, and a son, Ascan, who live at the Forest Hills address, and a brother, George, of Pasadena, Calif..
Mr. Backus was a brother of the late John E. Backus, one of Long Island’s prominent farm leaders, who was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Bridges for Queens County by Robert E Van Wyck, first Mayor of Greater New York, and who largely directed the construction of the Queensborough Bridge [now spelt “Queensboro”].”

7625. Wilhelmina 'Minnie' Backus-24148

The following obituary contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha, Ph.D.:
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Friday, March 1, 1940, Page 13, Column 7:

“Wilhelmina Backus Of Forest Hills
Member of 2 Old Queens Families Ill Only 10 Days

Miss Wilhelmina Backus, a member of two families long prominently identified with the growth of Queens County, died today in the old Backus family home at Queens Boulevard and 69th Road, Forest Hills. She was 62 and had been ill for ten days.
The Backus family at one time owned the greater part of what is now known as Forest Hills. It was part of the old farm which her grandfather, the late Ascan Backus, operated for many years. Ascan Ave. in the section was named after him.
Miss Backus was the daughter of the late Frederick D. Backus, former president of the Cord Meyer Development Company, and banker, who died three years ago. Mr. Backus was prominent in the development of Forest Hills.

SERVICES MONDAY
Miss Backus was born in Newtown on July 10, 1877, and lived all of her life in Queens. Her mother, the late Alice Jackson Backus, was a member of a noted Queens family whose farm adjoined the Backus farm. She died in 1926.
Miss Backus is survived by a brother, Ascan Backus. The services will be held at the home at 2:30 p.m. [on] Monday, with the Rev. C. Lawson Willard Jr., rector of St. James P. E. Church, Elmhurst, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.”

7626. Ascan Backus-24149

the following contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha, Ph.D.:

The New York Times, Monday, August 29, 1948, Page 57:
“BACKUS—Ascan, suddenly on Aug. 27, 1948, son of the late Frederick D. and Alice Jackson, brother of the late Wilhelmina Backus. Funeral services at his late residence, 104-55 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills, L. I., on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Interment Maple Grove Cemetery.”

Searching The Italian Genealogical Group’s website, one finds in their New York City Death Index:
Backus, Ascan - age:70 yrs; D/O/D: Aug 28, 1948; Certificate #: 7661; County:Queens

The date of death differs from that cited in The New York Times by one day, but it provides us with his age. A visit to Ancestry.com reveals that he filled out a draft card during World War II, which should have his exact birth date on it. I can find no evidence whatsoever that Ascan or his sister, Wilhelmina, ever married or had any children

The WWI Draft Registration card at ancestry.com is not currently indexed properly, but a check of the actual image here http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=6482&iid=NY-1787092-3129&fn=Arean&ln=Backus&st=r&ssrc=&pid=1583297 shows this is Ascan with his Forest Hills address in Queens and Alice J. Backus as wife.

The following records and notes contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha January, 2011:
The New York Times, Monday, April 7, 1941, Page 17:
“MRS. OLIVER C. GARDINER
Mrs. Maria B. Jackson Gardiner, wife of Oliver C. Gardiner, secretary of William Sloane House, Y. M. C. A. branch at Thirty-fourth Street and Ninth Avenue, died yesterday [i.e. Sunday, April 6, 1941] in the Jamaica Hospital after an operation performed Saturday. She was 57 years old and lived at 88-41 195th Place, Hollis, Queens.”

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Monday, April 7, 1941, Page 9, Column 2:
“Mrs. Oliver C. Gardiner
Funeral services for Mrs. Maria Jackson Gardiner, wife of Oliver C. Gardiner, a secretary of the William Sloane House of the Young Men’s Christian Association, at 34th St. and 9th Ave., Manhattan, who died yesterday [i.e. Sunday, April 6, 1941] at Jamaica Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at her home, 88-41 195th Place, Hollis Park Gardens.
Mrs. Gardiner was 56 and was the daughter of Gertrude R. Lott and Jarvis Jackson. On her mother’s side she was related to one of Long Island’s oldest Families. Her husband is the only immediate survivor. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.”

Based on the next-to-the-last line of her obituary in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, I doubt that they ever had children. Her husband outlived her by two and a half decades. Her will went for probate, then her estate was appraised:

The New York Times, Saturday, May 10, 1941, Page 30:
“Wills for Probate
QUEENS
GARDINER, MARIA B. (April 6). Estate, $1,000 real and $10,000 personal. To husband, Oliver C. Gardiner of 88-41 195th Pl., Hollis, executor.”

The New York Times, Tuesday, July 1, 1941, Page 44:
“Estates Appraised
QUEENS
GARDINER, MARIE BOOTH (April 6, 1941). Gross assets, $25,382; net, $11,887. To husband, Oliver C. Gardiner. Chief assets, real estate, $11,112. Wood & Marshall, attorneys, 89-31 161st St., Jamaica.”

Note that her name in the obituaries and the will announcement is “Maria B. Jackson Gardiner”, but in the estate appraisal it is “Marie Booth Gardiner”. Obviously, she is named after her maternal aunt, albeit her married name, which agrees with the 1900 Census Record. This may explain why she is listed in the 1910 Census Record as “Rita”; in a 1897 article about a wedding, her father and she are listed among the attendees as “…Mr. Jarvis Jackson, Miss Ritie Jackson,…”; in a 1909 piece concerning the play “The Butterflies”, in which she had a rôle, she was cited as “Maria B. Jackson; and in a 1911 newspaper article about another play, “Esmeralda”, in which she appeared, she is again called “Ritie Jackson”. Based on this evidence, I think that “Marie Booth Jackson” was probably her “official” name, while “Ritie” and/or “Rita” were nicknames, and “Maria” may have been her preferred usage or a mistake.

7628. Frederick Backus Jackson-24152

The following notes and obituary contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:
The following death notice is for Frederick Backus Jackson, the previously unrecorded son of Jarvis Jackson-18613 and Gertrude R. Lott-18614, which also mentions another relative:

The Newtown Register, Thursday, February 28, 1907, Page 5, Column 5:
“FREDERICK BACKUS JACKSON.

Frederick Backus Jackson, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis Jackson, of Jamaica, died at his home in that village last Sunday [i.e. Sunday, February 24, 1907], in the twentieth year of his age. Mr. Jackson was a nephew of Mrs. Frederick D. Backus of Whitepot [“Whitepot”, an anglicized version of the Dutch “Whiteput”, meaning “hollow creek”, was the name of a neighborhood that included the northernmost parts of modern Kew Gardens, Queens, NY] and was well known in that locality and elsewhere. He had many friends by all of whom he will be greatly missed. Much sympathy is felt by every one [sic: everyone] for his bereaved parents. The funeral services, which were largely attended, were held yesterday afternoon at his late home 420 Hillside avenue.”

Note that this is the same address as cited in his mother, Gertrude R. Jackson’s death notice, thus confirming his identity. It also cites an aunt, Mrs. Frederick D. Backus, who further research identifies as Alice Jackson Backus [daughter of Henry Jackson and Sarah Ann Mott.]

4485. Robert Everett Jackson Sr.-3682

Obituary provided by Robert Eldredge, published in the 'Long Island Daily Press', date unknown.
Robert Jackson Rites Tonight
Services will be held for Robert E. Jackson Sr. of Seaford, an old-time Long Islander who died Sunday at the age of 86.
A cousin of the late Birdsall Jackson, who was noted for his colections (sic) of Long Island folklore, he was a descendant of the Jacksons who settled on the South Shore in the middle-1600s, one of Long Island's "first 100 families."
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Jackson had lived in Lynbrook since his childhood days when it was known as Pearsall's Corners.
His wife, Rose, died in 1958, a year before they would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. Jackson retired 20 years ago as an accountant for Sunrise Blue Coal. Until a short time ago when he came to live in Seaford with his son, Robert E. Jr. and his family, Mr. Jackson's pride and joy was the old-fashioned gardens at his Lynbrook home.
Peonies were a specialty with him, and each year he enjoyed giving a supply of them to Christ Church there.
As a youth, he was an "amateur professor of the piano," giving lessons and organizing a small band in Lynbrook.
Besides his son Robert, Mr. Jackson is survived by another son, Alfred E. of East Rockaway, and two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Sickler of Wantagh, and Mrs. Rose Krull, whose husband, Charles, is major (sic) of East Rockaway; also 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Services tonight at 7:30 are at the Lawrence D. Rouse Wantagh Funeral Home at 3361 Park Ave. They will be conducted by the Rev. Albert G. Dezso of the Bellmore Presbyterian Church.
Interment will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
