From Jim Reis', Pieces of the Past, http://www.rootsweb.com/~kycampbe/bigmac.htm:

Daniel Carter Beard was born June 21, 1850 at 17 W. Ninth St. in Cincinnati, the son of James Henry and Mary Caroline Carter Beard. The family moved to Covington and rented a house at 322 E Third St. when he was 11. Beard spent many hours exploring the banks of the Ohio and Licking rivers and the woods outside Covington. He picked up a nickname to match his developing passion. He was a husky boy and his uncle pegged him "Buffalo".

During the Civil War, Union forces were stationed along the Northern Kentucky hilltops as a defensive perimeter for Cincinnati. The tales the soldiers told made the young Beard a frequent camp visitor. He organized his companions into a small group of boy pioneers who built their own secret camp along Banklick Creek. Part of the fun of going to the camp was sneaking past soldiers on sentry duty.

Daniel majored in engineering at Worrmall's Academy in Covington and graduated as a civil engineer and surveyor. He helped survey hills for the streetcar inclines later built on Mt. Adams and Price Hill. In 1878 he moved to New York and became an illustrator for many magazines and book, including Mark Twain's "Connecticut Yankee", "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn."

In 1894 he married Beatrice Alice Jackson and had a son and daughter. In 1905 he became editor of "Recreation" and the business manager suggested that the magazine start an organization for juvenile sportsmen. Beard liked the idea and founded an organization called the Sons of Daniel Boone. It was through his involvement with the Sons of Daniel Boone that Beard met Sir Robert Baden-Powell. He had started a program based on Beards called "Boy Scout". When he returned to America in 1910 it was under the title of Boy Scout of America. Beards Son of Pioneer merged with this organization and Beard became its first national scout commissioner, a position he held the rest of his life.

In 1934, during his last visit to Covington, Beard was honored with a parade that included scouts from Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. Beard died June 11, 1941, 10 days before his 91st birthday. His boyhood home was made a national landmark in 1966 and a statue adjacent to the home on Third Street was dedicated in 1988. Beard is buried in Rockland County, New York.

Here, Jacob Willits Jackson’s adopted son, Harold, has named his son after his adoptive father, Jacob Willits Jackson; also note that Harold's middle name is “Albertson”, i.e. his mother’s maiden name.

The following contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:

Now we find that there was indeed a brother named Leonard Mott Hicks, with his middle name being his mother’s maiden name. But why is he not mentioned in the newspaper accounts regarding his parents and siblings? Search for him in other venues led to the answer, with the following engagement and marriage announcements:

The New York Times, April 17, 1894, Page 5:

“THE SOCIAL WORLD.
—Miss McCoun Engaged.—The engagement of Miss Rebecca Youngs McCoun of Oyster Bay, L. I, a great-granddaughter of Vice Chancellor William Townsend McCoun, to Leonard Hicks of Roslyn has been announced.”

The New York Times, November 25, 1897, Page 7:

“Hicks—McCoun.
At Oyster Bay, L. I., yesterday afternoon [i.e. on Wednesday, November 24, 1897], Miss Rebecca Youngs McCoun, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney McCoun of that place, and Leonard M. Hicks, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Willet Hicks of Locust Valley, L. I., were married by the Rev. Henry H. Washburn, rector of Christ's Church, at the home of the bride's parents. The bride wore a brown tailor-made traveling gown. She is a great-grand-daughter of William T. McCoun, who was Vice Chancellor and Justice of the Supreme Court.”
~~~~~~~~~~
So he married a non-Quaker and was presumably dismissed from the church, and possibly shunned by his family.
Rebecca Youngs McCoun-23685
The following contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:
The New York Times, January 11, 1937, Page 20:
“MRS. LEONARD HICKS
Special to The New York Times.
OYSTER BAY, L. I., Jan. 10.—Mrs. Rebecca Y. Hicks, widow of Leonard Hicks and a member of one of the oldest families in Oyster Bay Township, died today in the North Country Community Hospital at Glen Cove of lockjaw, following a brief illness. Her age was 62. Mrs. Hicks was born in this community, a daughter of the late Sidney and Mary Townsend McCour [sic: McCoun], who formerly owned the land on which Planting Fields, the W. R. Coe estate, is now established. Three sons, Townsend, Harold and Robert, survive.”
~~~~~~~~~~

New York Times, January 11, 1937, Page 19:
“HICKS—On Sunday, Jan. 10, 1937, Rebecca Y. Hicks, in her sixty-second year. Funeral service at her late residence, East Main St., Oyster Bay, L. I., on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1937, at 2:30 P. M.”
~~~~~~~~~~
Her obituary establishes that they had three sons, Townsend, Harold, and Robert, and that Leonard passed away prior to her death. I was unable to find an obituary or death notice for him despite several searches. However, I found both of their names in the Sutton-Appleton Family Tree on RootsWeb:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=sutton-appleton&id=I5160
This ancestry tree says Rebecca died in 1937 and is buried in McCoun Cem, Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York.
This gives us her birth and death dates, in addition to the locations where these events took place; it confirms her parentage; it mentions her brother, Edward, and sister, Dorothy; it provides her second husband’s first name; and it details her daughter and notes succeeding generations.
William L. Gallup-24303
Social Security Death Index
Name: William Gallup
SSN: 048-32-7295
Last Residence: 06385 Waterford, New London, Connecticut, United States of America
Born: 18 Nov 1902
Died: Aug 1973 (probable error; see below)
State (Year) SSN issued: Connecticut (1958-1959)
This SSDI date of death differs from the d/o/d on his tombstone and on his memorial record at Find-a-Grave. The inscription on the tombstone is 1965 but the photo is a bit smudged and it could even be 1968. The memorial record #6834121 gives his d/o/d as 15 Mar 1965. As William's widow, Edna, remarried in 1972, the 1965 date appears correct. A death certificate would verify the doubtful situation.
Dr. Anthony Troha, an excellent researcher, has said Roland died at Groton, New London Co., Connecticut and I have used that info. But do note that Janice Watrous, creator of Roland's memorial at Find-a-Grave has said that Roland died at New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut. Further research is needed to settle the doubt.
Arthur is working as a finisher in a furniture factory.
By 1930 Edward and Rose have moved to Connecticut where is is working as a general painter.
1930 Census Dist 37, New London, New London Co., Connecticut
Jackson, Arthur T. Head M W 43 M at23 PA NY PA
Jackson, Rose wife F W 39 M at29 NY NY NY (age at date of marriage is obviously in error)
Jackson, Edward son M W 18 S PA PA NY
Jackson, Dorothy dau F W 17 S PA PA NY
Edward is a pre-deceased brother in his sister, Edna's August 1999 obituary.
Note from Dr. Troha: "I cannot find any additional information on Edward. He is not mentioned in his father’s 1969 obituary or that of his sister, Dorothy Jackson Page, in 1992. In the 1999 obituary of his sister, Edna Jackson Gallup Reed, he is said to have predeceased her, so I am wondering if he died decades earlier, perhaps in the 1930’s. I notice that there is no listing for a World War II Draft Card in his name on Ancestry.com, which seems strange if he was alive during the war. I searched The New York Times archives for World War II Casualty Lists containing his name, but I could not find anything."
