Descendants of Robert Jackson-554

Notes

2. Mary Jackson-2321

From "The Jones Family of Long Island" by John H. Jones, pg 352: "Mary was not named in her father's will, but is named in a deed from him to his son John, and the latter's two sons, John and James, under date 5 May, 1653, conveying 'all his lands in Hempstead, etc., excepting that which I have already given my daughter, Mary Ferris, of Westchester Co.' (See Vol. 7, p. 32 of Deeds, Secy. of State Office, Albany, N.Y.)"

I have not researched the Long Island real estate records, but on reflection about this deed, I've come to believe that this is a misprint of the date of the above deed. My guess is that it should read 1683 not 1653. This would be a few weeks before Robert signed his will, as he was obviously winding up his affairs. Also by this date his daughter Mary would have been married and his son John sired two sons. None of this could have happened by 1653. If anyone has access to records of the actual deed, I would appreciate knowing if this 1683 assumption is correct.

John Ferris-2846

B. Lenker gives an ALT birth date and place: b 1649 in Leicestershire, NY.

The Descendants of Jeffrey Ferris web site gives a different name for John's second wife: Grace Pauling.

14. Peter Ferris-2852

From Ferris site: "His estimated year of birth is expressed in various writings as 1663-1665; 1669? and 1670-1681 in Westchester Co, NY. Dates reflected in this writing are based on his date of marriage."

From Jackson/Paxcon site: "Res in Westchester and Mamaroneck; had 4 sons."

15. Jonathan Ferris-2855

Ferris site says Jonathan apparently never married. His will was proved 31 May 1753.

3. Col. John Jackson-405

The Jackson Ledger indicates Col. John married twice. (though this is an error; see below.)

The website www.rootsweb.com/~njmorris/rockawayrecords/jackson.htm states that John was married to Elizabeth Hallet and to Elizabeth Layman. This info was probably taken from the records of J. Pearcy Crayon, as Mr. Crayon is quoted below saying the same thing. Oscar B. Robbins' book "History of the Jackson Family" pg 3 notes that Elizabeth Layman should be Elizabeth Seaman. This was probably a mis-reading of the old records as old-style handwriting 'S' & 'L' look very similar.

Page 3 of this same Robbin's book quotes J. Percy Crayon who ascribed two wives to Col. John. This error is covered in detail in the Table of Contents, this site, click on Conflicting Data. Please read the detail there, but to summarize, Crayon seems to have left out a whole generation. Subsequent study indicates both of these sources are probably in error. Elizabeth Seaman was Col. John's wife and Elizabeth Hallett was the wife on the Colonel's son, John. Col. John's will and the book "Long Island Genealogies" by Bunker greatly helped in resolving this issue and getting these children with their proper parents.

The 1724 Will of Col. John Jackson is available to read on this site. See Table of Contents; click on Wills. Heirs are sons Samuel, John, and James, daughters Martha Titus, Elizabeth Doughty, Hannah Seaman, Sarah Barnes, son-in-law Jeremiah Scott and daughter Mary Scott's four daughters. Daughter Mary had died but Col. John provided for her children. John Tredwell, s/o John Tredwell, was one of the executors named in this will.

Don Norman's records show John married only to Elizabeth Seaman. Don also records "John was a member of the Assembly in 1664 when the Colony of New York was established. He is recorded as Captain of the Queen's Troops in 1689, as a Juryman in 1691, as High Sheriff 1693-1716, Representative to the Colonial Legislature in 1699, Justice of the Peace in 1700, as Lieutenant Colonel in 1701, as Colonel in December 30, 1701, as a member of the protestant Petition to King William III in 1703, as Commissioner of Highway 171-1723 [sic] and as Judge of Queen's County from 1723 until his death in 1725."

There is a record of William Jackson that is quoted in Oscar Burton Robbins' book "History of the Jackson Family" page 5 that has caused quite a bit of mixup. I am quoting it here with my interpretation of the paragraph:
"Colonel John Jackson . . . left three sons and five daughters, viz; first, Samuel, son of Colonel John Jackson, by his father's Will inherited the Homestead, which was situated at Jerusalem in the Town of Hempstead. His children were Richard, Townsend, Thomas, Ruth, Jerimah (sic) m. James Hewlet, Letitia m. Solomon Pool, -Mary m. John Pratt and Martha m. Samuel Birdsall. by William Jackson" The first sentence agrees with children listed in John's Will. But the problem here is that the next sentence listing the children says 'his children' and does not refer to Colonel John but instead refers to the aforementioned Samuel. Richard, Townsend, Thomas, Ruth, Jeremiah, Letitia, Mary and Martha are all children of Samuel and grandchildren of Colonel John.

5. Martha Jackson-556

Long Island Genealogy; Bunker, pg 220 - Martha m Nathaniel Coles, s/o Robert Coles; but on pg 338, Ms. Bunker says Martha m the son of Nathaniel Coles.

Other records agree that Nathaniel was the son of Robert Coles. (R. G. Clarke)

Martha is mentioned as being deceased in her father's 1683 Will. See transcription of Will on this site. My source for the d/o/d used Quaker dating 16 Feb 1668/1669 for her death. I would have preferred to see it with the number of the month on both Martha's record and her son's record. Perhaps later I will find it. But apparently she died just soon after giving birth to her only child. Her husband Nathaniel married again.

6. Sarah Jackson-558

Quote from reader concerning conflicting data about Nathaniel Moore:
"Most sources I see match the Nathaniel Moore who was b. 1642, son of Thomas Moore and Martha Youngs, to Sarah Vail, the dau. of Jeremiah Vail. This Nathaniel's will of 19 Apr 1698 mentions his wife Sarah and a brother-in-law Jeremiah Vail, which seems to suggest this is correct.

The Nathaniel Moore who married Sarah Jackson and was father of John Jackson Moore is generally identified as this Nathaniel's nephew, the son of Thomas Moore and supposedly Elizabeth Mott. This does seem to match the birthdate of a son John in 1691 better than the uncle Nathaniel.

The most reliable source I have found giving this position is Southold Index of 1698. I have seen the Jacob Milton Bergen book and believe the author confused the two Nathaniels, not hard to imagine given all the Sarahs, Thomases, etc. floating around, and not much primary evidence." Jrich at www.werelate 30 Jan 2009

I, Janie, have studied the Southold Index of 1698, Bunker's page 250 about the Moores, and the article published in "The Record" Vol 15, April 1884, pgs 59 & 60 and have come to see that Jrich was correct. So the source references to the Jacob Milton Bergen book have been removed for this particular reference.
http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/Southold/Index.pdf
(Town of Southold, Long Island) "Personal index prior to 1698, and index of 1698" by Moore, Charles B.: compiled and copied for the purpose of having corrections suggested and greater fullness and accuracy attained and preserved, especially as to the first or early settlers of the town, including all named in or prior to the list of 1698. Pg 104:
Moore, Sarah, wid. of Nathaniel, d. 10 Jun 1733.

Also conclusions drawn by User:Jrich at http://www.WeRelate: "Macy, Harry Jr. "Robert Jackson's Wives and Children", in The New York genealogical and biographical record. (New York, New York: New York Genealogical and Biographical Society), Vol. 131 Number 1, page 6-7, Jan. 2000.
Robert Jackson contested the will of William Washburn in 1659 on behalf his two daughters, children of a deceased daughter of William. An expense submitted mentioned caring for these daughters for 3 years, leading to the conclusion the mother died 1656. Sarah was the oldest of the two, so born about 1654.
