Rebecca Jackson is listed on the Perry County, Tennessee US Census of 1840 with 1 male child age 5-10, one male child age 10-15, one male child 15-20, one female child 5-10 and one female child 10-15. There was no husband listed. Rebecca Jackson, Nancy Rushing and Mary Bennett are listed side by side on the 1840 Perry Co., Tennessee US Census, all heads of households. Rebecca and son, James Holden, age 13 are living near her brother William Gilbert Rushing in Dist 4, Decatur Co., Tennessee in 1850.
*John Hendrick, son of Nancy Ann Hendrick, was one of four of her children that were claimed as his own by Stephen Jackson. By act of the NC Legislature the surname of the children was changed to Jackson. Recent Y-DNA Test results show that this John Hendrick Jackson may not have actually been a true son of Stephen Jackson. The Y-DNA is perfect match to the "Harrell" surname of the same area in Anson County, NC.
* 1804 Laws of North Carolina, Chapter CXXVL. "An act to alter names of the persons therein mention, and to legitamate them. Been acted by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same. That the names of William Joyner, Martha Joyner, Sally Joyner, Joseph Joyner, Mary Joyner and Geraldus Joyner, illegitimate children of Joseph Batts and Elizabeth Joyner, of Edgecomb County, be altered and changed to those of William Batts, Martha Batts, Elizabeth Batts, Sally Batts, Joseph Batts, Mary Batts and Geraldus Batts:...And the names of John Kindrick, Polly Kindrick, Betsey Kindrick and Salley Kindrick, natural born children of Stephen Jackson, of Anson County, be altered to the names of John Jackson, Polly Jackson, Betsey Jackson and Salley Jackson..."
* Book 45 page 20 1810, Dec 29, Stephen Jackson (and Ann Kendrick his wife) to John Jackson (their son) a Negro boy named Simon.* 1810 Dec 29 Stephen Jackson to John Jackson (his son) 250 acres in Anson Co.

*1819 September Stephen Jackson and Nancy Kindrick , Dicision of Land: 200 acres to Stephen and 221 1/2 to Nancy in Anson Co.
*A John Jackson (16-26) is listed on the 1820 Chesterfield Co., SC census. He has a young wife (16-26) and no children.
*A John Jackson is shown on the 1830 Census in Anson Co., NC. His age is between 20-30 his wife is between 15-20 and they have one male child under 5 years. It is impossible to determine if this is the same John Jackson, but the pattern of movement, the ages and the child do support the notion that this is the same John Jackson.
*The records below indicate that John Jackson's estate was settled in the courts of Union County, NC. Union County was formed in 1842 from parts of Anson County and Mecklenburg County, The first census was 1850. It is possible that John Jackson died in Tennessee and still had real property in Union County, NC. It is also feasible that he could have died years earlier than the request for Power of Attorney was made, probably as early as 1839 as Rebecca is in Perry County, Tennessee with the children in 1840 as head of household.
*Deed Book 13, Page 139, dtd 3 Dec 1849 "William H. Bennett &wife to Griffin Avitt, Power of Atty--W. H. & wife, Temperance, formerly Temperance Jackson of Co. of Decatur, State of TN to receive for us a sum of money in the hands of Darling Rushing, guardian of said Temperance Jackson $200 more or less her portion in the estate of John Jackson deceased late of Union County, NC. Attest: William G. Rushing/John Garrett." This record proves Temperance was a daughter of John Jackson and therefore John Jackson was the husband of Rebecca Rushing. Temperance and her husband William H. Bennett were living in Decaturville, Decatur Co., Tennessee in 1850.
*No records of any of the other children making claim on the John Jackson estate have been found. According to family oral history, through the memories of later descendants, John and Rebecca had 3 sons and two daughters. We have been able to trace all but Stephen. According to those memories, Stephen was born in the 1820's in North Carolina or South Carolina. John Jackson's date of death has not been established but according to the records we have he probably died before Dec 1849 as that is when his daughter, Temperance, sought the $200.00 due her from his estate. The youngest child, James Holden, was born on1 May 1837. If this is true and Rebecca had a normal pregnancy of 9 months John Jackson was alive in August of 1836. He could have died between Aug 1836 and Dec 1849. The children of John Jackson and Rebecca Rushing are proven by the document mentioned above in conjunction with oral history and census records of North Carolina and Tennessee. Other records and documentation are still being sought. John Jackson has been referred to as John Jackson, Jr., but that does not necessarily mean that his father was John Jackson, Sr. It was common to refer to two men of the same name as Senior and Junior, even though they may not be related. It was a way of distinguishing between the two men. Movement between Anson, Chesterfield and Union Counties was not unusual as they all joined and more than likely this John Jackson live on or near the border line of the counties.
278. Stephen JACKSON-269
According to family stories, Stephen was partners with his brother Richard in a River Boat. A record of Stephen has not been found, but brother Richard has been traced through the turn of the century and he was in fact a River Boat Pilot and Captain. There is a Stephen Jackson b. abt 1828 and wife Mary J, b. abt 1832 living in Chesterfield Co., SC in 1850. They have one child, a male named Dossey age 1. This could be our Stephen.
212. William Gilbert RUSHING-74
William Gilbert (Gil) Rushing was born October 23, 1810, in Anson Co., NC, and died April 15, 1875. He had moved to Decatur County, then Perry County, by 1836. He was a farmer. in 1841 he donated the land where Campground Cumberland Presbyterian Church now stands for use for a church and cemetery. His wife Eliza was born April 20, 1819, and died March 14, 1881. Among descendants of Eliza's granddaughter Sophia Rushing Moore there is an oral tradition that Eliza was sister of Noah Williams. However, in the marriage record of son Millard Fillmore Rushing in Massac Co., IL, she is listed as Eliza White. William Gilbert Rushing and Eliza are buried at Campground Cemetery, Decatur Co., TN. Nancy Rushing, mother of William is living with him in 1850, Decatur Co., Tennessee.
